In a much-anticipated clash, Balmain jumped out of the blocks, and came back strongly in the second half after the Students kicked seven goals in the second quarter. Jason Saddington was superb up forward, as was Tim Schmidt with his disposal in the centre. Thomas Head justified his Rising Star Nomination with four goals. Clint Wells was easily the best for Sydney Uni- versity. Over at Bruce Purser, East Coast were expected to win easily against middle-of-table St George. However, things didn‘t quite go to script, as the Dragons kept in touch with the highly-touted Eagles at every change. The attacking duo of Jamie Vlatko and Stephen Doyle eventually got the Eagles home. Youngster, Mitchell Edwards was out- standing in his Senior debut for the Dragons. It was also young talent time at Monarch Oval, where Brandon Jack kicked seven goals in Pennant Hills big win over Campbelltown. Jack is our Rising Star Nominee for this Roundmore information is on Page 6. In other matches, North Shore survived their second less-than-a-goal win in a fort- night, with a five-point victory over a plucky UNSW outfit, while Western Suburbs also survived a scare before registering an eleven-point win over UTS. It would be remiss not to quickly discuss the quality of our young players on the AFL Sydney stage and beyond. Further to what has been mentioned above, Round 6 Rising Star Nominee, Lloyd Perris (St George) starred with 22 possessions, including 13 contested, in NSW‘s 3-point win over Tasmania in the opening match of the Under 16 National Championships last Saturday. Former Riverview product, Will Sierakowski, also made the headlines last week, when he was named first emergency in Hawthorn‘s AFL side against Essendon. So to this weekend, where all Premier Division matches will take place on Saturday afternoon. Sydney University kicks off the action at home against UTS. The Students will be favoured with the calibre of Ben Manakarious and Peter Dugmore, against a UTS side who is steadily improving against more established opposi- tion. They led at half-time and produced more scoring shots, only to go down by 11 points away to Western Sub- urbs. The trio of Tom Steinfort, Mark Trehwella and Michael Atkinson have been consistently the Bats‘ best and will figure prominently in their club Best and Fairest at season‘s end. At the Village Green, UNSW/ES are slipping further from the finals race and will be keen to arrest the slide against the top-of-the-table Balmain. After a disappointing display the week before, the Bulldogs enjoyed a much better performance against North Shore. Their improved fortunes came on the back of strong performances from Pete Kefalas and Jeremy Kiel. Balmain are in impressive knick, and are well-coached by Nic Fosdike. The emergence of James Howard and Braedon Jones has helped add run and support the top-line players. In the Foxtel Match of the Round, Illawarra, coming off the bye, host the winless Campbelltown at North Dalton Park. The Blues were well beaten by Pennant Hills, and will find the going tough against the Lions‘ who are still well in contention for a finals berth. Pennant Hills have been strong after the mid-season break, and their credentials will be tested at Ern Holmes Oval against East Coast. The Demons would be disappointed by their performance after quarter-time in their last en- counter with the Eagles, and are better placed to mount a challenge, with the likes of Sam Boughton and Jonathon Gourlay becoming more established at Premier Division level. East Coast have class over the pitch, and will be looking to build on their win over the Dragons. The final match of the round sees North Shore take on St George at Gore Hill Oval. The Bombers are within a win of third place, and have an even spread of talent this year. In contrast, St George sit outside the top five, level on Match Ratio with Illawarra and UNSW/ES. They are becoming more dangerous with more avenues to goal, outside Jon Shineberg. This weekend also marks our Annual Call to Arms Round. Please donate generously at your local ground this weekend, as all funds go to the Cancer Council in the fight against men‘s cancer. It is a worthwhile cause and well worth getting behind. Another fine weekend ensured a high standard of matches played with Balmain and East Coast remaining on top after withstanding strong challenges. 4 Round 12— June 25-26, 2011

Greater Western Sydney GIANTS assistant coach Mark Williams is looking far and wide for supporters of the AFL‘s 18th club. On Wednesday, June 22, the GIANTS hosted over 120 newly arrived migrant and refugee children to play in a modified AFL program for the very first time – the Intensive English Centre‘s Cup. For many of the multicultural youth it was their first taste of AFL hav-ing recently fled the hardship and wars which have devastated their homes such as Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine. Despite AFL being relatively unknown among the 60 percent of immi-grants to Australia who reside in western Sydney, Williams said the club will do whatever it takes to provide everyone with an opportunity to get involved in AFL. ―There‘s 100 different cultures living in western Sydney here and 1.9 million people out this way and it just gives us a great opportunity to show them how warm and embracing AFL is,‖ Williams said. ―You look around the AFL now and you see so many different people from different cultures playing which just shows the opportunities (available). ―Out here now, it‘s an untapped market for us and we‘re really lucky to be out here. ―It won‘t be one week, one month or one year even, but it will be a generational change, it will take time … and we will take time to develop the people in this area so they can understand, follow the game and be supporters.‖

With large communities hailing from Africa, Asia and the Middle East in Sydney‘s west, the GIANTS will toil long and hard to spread the AFL word among people who are more accustomed to the round ball in soccer than the egg-shaped Sherrin. Williams is the perfect candidate to get involved in community engagement programs at the GIANTS having been part of two start-up clubs in the past as a player for the Brisbane Bears and an assistant coach in the inaugural Port Adelaide AFL team. The former premiership coach has also found an ally in NRL recruit Israel Folau, whose Tongan parents moved to Minto, NSW before he was born.

―I‘ve been learning a little bit from Israel (Folau), I‘ve been talk-ing to him about what his parents, family and friends know about AFL,‖ Williams said. ―This is a different culture and a different set up than the tradi-tional (AFL) states and we‘ve got to bend over backwards to show them that we care about them learning the game. We have to break it down. ―Israel‘s parents don‘t know much about the AFL and we need to show them the skills, what the rules are, what the umpires are doing and the scoring system.‖

It will only be a matter of time until the GIANTS‘ supporter and player base develops in Sydney‘s west as more multicultural and indigenous programs are established. The IEC Cup is one program which brings together migrant and newly arrived children to Australia to provide them with an op-portunity to experience a new sport and meet friends as they settle into their new lives.

5 Round 12— June 25-26, 2011

AFL Sydney clubs will fight back against one of their fiercest oppo-nents, cancer, this weekend when they take part in Cancer Council‘s Call To Arms fundraiser. Call To Arms is one of Cancer Council‘s annual fundraising events that offers men's sporting groups of all ages and codes the opportunity to help raise funds and awareness for cancer - a disease that affects one in two Australian men by the age of 85. Across NSW and the ACT, clubs have signed up for the cause and will hold their own Call to Arms fundraising activities throughout the month. All money raised for Call to Arms will go towards Cancer Council‘s men‘s cancer research, preven-tion, information and support services. Thousands of sporting teams will wear yellow armbands in show of support to men who have sur-vived cancer, those currently facing the cancer fight, and to remember men who have lost their lives. Last year, more than 3,700 sports teams throughout NSW took part in the fundraiser, and helped raise more than $240,000. Teams ranged from local Auskick teams to professional clubs like NRL‘s

Wests Tigers. One in two Australian men will be diag-nosed with cancer before the age of 85, with 62,500 people expected to be diagnosed with disease this year – including 19,500 men from NSW alone. Encouragingly, some cancers are preventable. While Australian men are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer and are more likely to die from the dis-ease, one in three cancers is actually preventable. All you have to do is step up and get ac-tive by exercising 30 to 60 minutes a day. By limiting red meat intake to three to four times a week and increasing the amount of vegetables consumed each day you can reduce your risk of being diagnosed with cancer. And the big one, if people stop smoking they will drastically reduce the chance of being diagnosed with cancer. Cancer doesn‘t just affect players it affects parents, families, friends and the people that matter most to you. For more information please visit www.calltoarms.com.au.

AFL SYDNEY MATCH OF THE WEEK

2011 NAB AFL SYDNEY RISING STAR

BRANDON JACK (Pennant Hills)

Brandon Jack was named as the best player in the Pennant Hills‘ victory against Campbelltown on Saturday after kicking 7 goals from various positions in the forward line in only his 7th game of senior football. Jack, who has only played 3 years of AFL, progressing to the senior ranks from Pen-nant Hills‘ feeder club, Westbrook. He appears to be on the same path as his elder brother Swans best and fairest winner Kieran who also commenced his football career late after playing other winter sports. A current Swans Academy member, Jack was also selected in this year‘s NSW RAMS squad, which is always a great achievement for a under age (17 year old) after playing very well at the State trials at Coffs Harbour earlier this year. Pennant Hill‘s Senior coach Kevin Eynaud said ―Brandon has made the transition from junior football to senior football smoothly. He has played almost no under 18 club football and will basically miss that step in his development years, purely because he gives you no choice but to play him in seniors. His greatest natural attributes are his speed, agility and a raking left foot. The most impressive part of Brandon is his attitude and willingness to do the hard work it takes to make the next steps which start by cementing a spot in the Rams squad next year.‖

Senior Coach: Roger Moten

Round 11 saw Sydney University unfortunately lose in four out of our six games. However, our Under 18s produced a fantastic 11 point win over Penrith and also our Reds got up by over 6 goals in Division Three. Our Reds currently sit 3rd on the ladder and Under 18s fourth so both teams are well positioned to finish the season strongly ensuring a place in the finals. This week our 1‘s and 2‘s return to Oval #1 to take on UTS and the boys will be looking to bounce back strongly after last week‘s disappointing losses. This coincides with the‖ Team of the Dec-ade‖ dinner to celebrate some of the outstanding players that have represented the Sydney University Australian Rules Foot-ball Club between 2001 and 2010. This era was a successful one for Sydney University. The club was a dominant force in the first grade of the Sydney Australian Football Association at the start of the decade participating in 5 grand finals and winning 2 premierships in 2003 and 2005. The Club‘s success was recog-nised by its promotion to the Premier Division of the Sydney Football League in 2007. Since its promotion, the club has rapidly grown in strength as demonstrated by the club winning the minor premiership in 2010 and making its first grand final appearance at the top level of Sydney football for close to 20 years. Also, important news for our old boys - a return game is planned for the Sydney University Old Boys against the UTS Masters side at 1000 on July 30th at Trumper Park. We lost earlier in the year to UTS in the inaugural Ladies Day cup. However, we bounced back with a win against the Maroubra Sinners. We are looking for interested players to help avenge our loss. Please contact Doc Edwards by email at [email protected] The game coincides with the Sydney University Family day. The game will be a great start to the day before everyone gets back to Sydney University with their families SUANFC would like to recognise the strong support from our sponsors – Bendigo Bank, CplusC Design Construct, Sydney University Sport & Fitness, Forest Lodge Hotel, Integrated, Sydney City Toyota, Trust Company of Australia, SportsLab Physiotherapy, Ark Total Wealth and Doughboys Pizza.

A narrow loss to North Shore last week saw the Dogs slip down the ladder. In an entertaining and fast paced match, the Dogs had their chances, but were unable to get over the line. Best for the Dogs was the King of Mykanos, Peter Kefalas, whilst Burger King Leigh Lav-ery kicked 4. In other games, the 2‘s finals chances are all but gone after also having a narrow loss, whilst the 3‘s had a huge win and are sitting pretty on top of the table. This week see the Dogs take on Balmain, looking to get back on the winners list. In club news, the Trivia night will be held on 16 July. Always a cracking night, please contact the club for more details. The Bulldogs would like to thanks their sponsors, The Doncaster Hotel, Nicholas Haywood Jewellery Conci-erge, AW Edwards Plumbing and Randwick Dental.

We welcome Wests (Div 3) and Mac Uni (Div 5) to Pioneers this week. We have been enjoying some great weather so lets hope that continues this week with a double header at the home of football in the South East. Good luck to all sides today. Last week, we had a repeat of the recent wet weather round catchup with the Seniors off to Campbelltown and the Re-serves at home to Syd Uni. Unfortunately we couldn't repeat the earlier double win, with the Seniors having a disappointing loss to the Blues on the wide open spaces of Monarch. The Blues played to the ground and held their discipline which was a contrast to our own efforts. Hopefully this was a lapse rather then a trend and we get back on the right path this week against Wests. I am sure the boys will be more then aware of this after training with Croc this week! Croc declined to add any further comments given this is a family magazine. Neil Conlan picked up the players player. In the Ressies, the boys had a solid win over the Students. This puts this well in the four but we need to continue the academic streak with a win over the Warriors today. Steve Perry was players player in a good team effort which brought a smile to Coach Dean's face (unfortunately offset by his Tigers dropping the points against the Demons in other other game at 2pm Sat-urday of interest). Off field there are still tickets in the Reverse Raffle @ $100 per ticket. Supporters and players, your support is appreciated. Contact Condo for your lucky ticket! The draw is 30 July at the Botany Bay Hotel. The week before on 23 July, the Red White and Black night is on at the Doncaster Hotel which is always a great event. See Dave Turner for details. Lastly, we want to highlight the great support of the following partners of the Saints afc Major Sponsors- Hyundai, Pacific Network Global Logistics, Oriel Building Services, Supporting Sponsors - The Doncaster Hotel, Paddington Bowl-ing Club, Totally Workwear Mascot, NAB Randwick, Coates Hire, N G Farah and Rice Graphic Images.

The mighty Dockers have continued to impress in all three grades this year with another historic 3peat performance last week at Drum-moyne Oval‘s newly named ―Graveyard‖!! It was seesawing battle in the main game in front of Sydney AFL‘s biggest crowd this year, but it was the mighty Dockers who overcame a classy Sydney Uni outfit to remain on top of the Sydney AFL ladder, sitting above East Coast Eagles. The students impressed all day with some silky smooth skills that had the Dockers on the ropes, but in the end it was the forward press that turned the game with spearheads Jason Saddington (5 goals), and Thomas Head (4 goals) ensuring the seasons best victory to burst 2 games clear of Uni. Tim Schmidt was best on for the Dock-ers in his most dominant game all year and youngster Alex Mitchell was fierce all day in a brilliant performance. Matty Edwins and Brae-don ―Bloody‖ Jones were true to form this year with solid games and a little bit of claret! ―Aussie‖ Jo Britton stormed out of the blocks in the second half setting up 2 goals in the last quarter and kicking one himself. Big Show‘s all conquering cast turned on their best display of football for the year downing Sydney Uni in the Reserves to also remain on top of the ladder going into the second half of the season. The first half of the game was tightly contested, but it was a massive 3rd quarter for the Dockers, which set up a win to ensure a top of the table clash next week against Penrith! Chris Bolt was once again sensation in the backline holding leading goalkicker and former Bal-main dynamo Troy Cole to 2 goals for the day. Christopher Reichman was also fantastic and hard at the ball to help set up the win. Return-ing to the Dockers this week was prodigal son Michael Carey who impressed as did Julian Black returning from overseas. Damian Naughton and Troy Osland have been regular performers for the Dockers and were also among the best for the top of the ladder Dockers!! The ―Great One‖ Andrew Kyprianou continues to defy age and logic every week bagging 5 of the very best to take it up to Troy Cole with bragging rights for the goal kicking tally. Kibler‘s Colts were keen to reverse last rounds loss to a determined Southern Power in the early game and did not disappoint. In their best victory for the year the Colts ran out winners by 10 points in a closely contested game against an impressive Southern Power unit! Captains Brad Plug and ―Milky‖ Duell-Ferguson led the goal kicking tally each with 3 majors and were also the top two performers on the day. Daniel Field-Read was super impressive in his comeback match for the Dockers and was especially brilliant early with some great tackling pressure and excellent use of the footy. ―Slammin‖ Sam Goldsworthy was brilliant down back with hitting some massive targets on the wing to open up the Southern Power zone and Jarryd Hitchcox was equally impressive for the Dockers. Rhy Lindsay is becoming a consistant dominating force with Kibler‘s Colts and again was amongst the best players on the ground also kicking 2 goals for the day!

After enjoying a week off, the Lions welcome 3 different clubs to North Dalton Park today. Penrith in the Under 18‘s, Manly in Division One and Campbelltown in Pre-mier Division. After a heartbreaking final minute loss to North Shore a fortnight ago, the Lions will be keen to get back on the winners list against Campbelltown today. The Blues are still searching for their first victory and always provide stiff opposition against Illawarra. Division One will feel the brunt of the University Holiday period but will look to put in a spirited display against the league leading Wolves. The Under 18‘s will be aiming to go two from two against Penrith this season. A reminder to all that the Lions 40th Year Anniversary Ball is being held on Saturday 6th August at Waves Nightclub. www.penrithrams.com.au

The Penrith Rams returned to the winner‘s list on Saturday as they overcame a determined Moorebank side by 39 points at Rosedale Oval. Penrith went into the clash without the services of skipper Dave Bradley, as well as the potent forward line duo of Tim Cummins and Dale Chivas, who had contributed 65 goals between them so far this season. After a big loss the previous week to Holroyd-Parramatta, a difficult afternoon was certainly on the cards An even first half ensued, with limited scoring opportunities for both sides. Penrith were on top in general play, however, their undermanned forward line were consis-tently repelled by a strong Magpies defence, the Rams taking a 15 point lead into the long break. The pattern of the match continued after half time, with Penrith unable to take advantage of their opportunities, with matters not being helped by inaccuracy in front of goal which continues to be an issue. Ultimately though, the Rams were never really threatened as they recorded win number eight for the season. Jay Edwards, Bryce Roney and John Keane in his 150th game again led the backline superbly, with Tom Hall and Daniel Schroot leading the charge through the middle of the ground. Reserve Grade made it six straight victories with a 73 point win over the Magpies. A strong start saw Penrith race to a four goal quarter time lead, before the match became a much more even battle. Penrith again took the ascen-dancy in the final term to boot five unanswered goals in a performance that left coach Kevin Tate extremely happy. The three Nathans in Nathan Gatt, Nathan Rowley and Nathan White stood out for the winners, with Tayt Corless and Gordon Howell each kicking three

goals. The U/18‘s again put in much improved performance to go down by just 11 points to Sydney Uni at Cook Park. Against an oppo-nent who had beaten them by 20 goals in their previous match-up, Penrith came out in an aggressive frame of mind to take an early lead, before falling off somewhat through the middle two quarters. With the Students threatening to kick themselves out of the game in the second half, Penrith came back strongly, with only some late misses of their own preventing them from stealing the points. Ben McGovern made a welcome return to form to kick six goals, whilst Jack Ponton, Joe Hunt, Luke Jones and Harry Doyle were all amongst the best. The Rams now turn their attention to the top of the table clash with Balmain at Greygums Oval this Saturday, with the Reserves also facing a testing time against UTS, whilst the U/18‘s make the trek to North Dalton Park to tackle Illawarra. The club would like to acknowledge the continued support of our wonderful sponsors, IGA Signature, Goulburn Valley, Ice Break Ice Coffee and the Red Cow Inn.

After 2 big wins over competition leaders, the Goannas were confident of continuing their winning ways. The match against Auburn was anticipated to be a tight, physical contest, and this was duly delivered. After weathering an early storm, the Goan-nas were able to kick a couple of late goals and gain the as-cendency at quarter time. The second qauarter saw the Goan-nas tighten their grip on the game, before effectively shutting it out with a 6 goal 3rd time. A fiery last quarter rounded out a solid 44 point win for the Goannas who consolidate third spot on the ladder. The back line of Tony Mance, Andrew Munns, Peter Zuvela and Kristin Carville were instrumental in the win, repelling a number of Auburn attackes whilst setting up many for the Goannas. Shaun Costello was great all around the ground and Jason ‗Diesel‘ Wilson showed his typical grit at the in and un-ders. Div 4 were looking for a victory against an opponent they had beaten just 2 weeks ago on the long weekend. However, they were caught off guard in the first quarter by a determined Auburn side that was looking for win number 2. After regrouping at the break, the Goannas were able to assert their authority on the game, and were not troubled for the rest of the game as they came away with a 31 point win. Daniel Galayini, Ashley Mulcahy and Ethan Dean were reliable as ever down back, with Rory Woods, Troy Balzan and Luke Mansbridge were creative all around the ground. The boys are well set for a late surge at playing finals footy for the first time in 4 years. Division 5 headed to Rosedale to take on Moorebank, and ran into a very polished and professional unit who blitzed the Goan-nas early and were able to run away with a comfortable win. Albert Leung, Russell Witt, Peter Hardy, Al Fennell, Matt Cahill and Chris Zammit all put in excellent contributions on a tough day. The under 18‘s kicked off the days action at Moorebank looking to get a win under their belt and regain some momentum coming in to the second half of the year. After an even first quar-ter that saw scores level at the break, the Goannas opened the game up in the second with 4 goals to no score. In the second half they were able to resist a spirited effort by Moorebank, and held on to record a very important 20 point win. Jarryd Smith was the standout player on the day, and was well supported by Richard Talab, Brent Johnston, Ben Jenison, Liam Moxon and Tim Watson.

In the Challenge Cup, Campbelltown has continued their unbeaten run so far this season with a big win over the Macquarie Uni Kookas last Saturday. It was a dominant first half by the Blues, kicking twenty goals and keeping the Kookas to just one point. Despite the large deficit, Mac Uni didn't give up and were more competitive in the second half, kicking four goals and finishing Campbelltown 32.13.205 to Mac Uni 4.1.25. Tyson Sims was the leading goal scorer for Campbelltown with eight, while Daniel Beech and Cameron Gordon kicked five each. Daniel Beech, James Bottin-Noonan and Jordan Beveridge were among the best for the Blues. In the Division Three game, Campbelltown bounced back from a big loss in their round 11 match to beat Saints F.C. in a tight game. It was a close match with the Saints jumping out to a narrow lead in the first quarter but the Blues pulling back the deficit in the second and taking a narrow lead in the third. Last weekend saw all games at home in perfect conditions for football with the 18‘s first game of the day against Par-ramatta. After an even first quarter the Goannas took control of the game in the second quarter and despite fighting back in the third and fourth quarters the boys were unable to close the gap. The thirds also taking on the Goannas were never troubled and ran out convincing winners by 20 goals. The ressies taking on Penrith looking to avenge their first round loss were never in the hunt and their lack of commitment to training showed as the Rams won the game easily by 12 goals. The seniors took on Penrith also looking to avenge round one and whilst being very competitive all day just couldn‘t show it on the score board and every attacking foray seemed to be repelled by the Rams big men. At the end of the day the boys just couldn‘t match the Rams height all over the ground. This weekend sees everyone at home again with the thirds kicking off proceedings at 10.30 against Manly whist the 18‘s take on Balmain at 12.30 followed by the ressies against Auburn at 2.30 then the final game of the day sees the seniors taking on Sydney Uni at 4.30. Tunza has organised a bus trip for the Manly game on the 9

Division 1 maintained top spot with a solid performance down at Weldon with a 126 point win over Pennant Hills. After a disappoint-ing loss last week the boys were looking to play the style that has worked for them so far this season and came out with a blistering first half leading 90-8 at the main break. After a sluggish 3rd quar-ter the Wolves kicked away with an 8 goal last term to run out resounding winners. Ty (5 goals) and Levi (4 goals) were fantastic with Robbo and Burkey controlling the game in the midfield. Jabba and Matty Ahern also snuck in for 3 majors a piece to highlight the spread of goal kickers the young Wolves currently have. This week we travel down south to face Illawarra. Division 2 won its 3rd game of season with a solid 98 point win over Camden. With inaccuracy in the first half the Wolves were only 18 points up at the main break but kicked into gear kicking 7 goals in both the 3rd and 4th quarters. Benny Hawkins was the star up forward booting 9 majors. Matty B, LBC, Pokey and Motor were the other strong performers. Division 4 travelled out to Macquarie to face top of the table Warriors and played well despite falling 4 goals short. After holding their own in the first half the Mac side were able to gain a small lead and hold on. Wombat, Hurley and Junior Pilat (3 goals) were the best performers. This week both Division‘s 2 and 4 travel out to Parramatta. Division 5 hosted Camden in the morning game at Weldon looking to jump into the top 4. After dominating the first half the Wolves were unable to convert and only led by 13 at the main break. In the second half they came out a more switched on outfit and ran out 75 point winners. Razzle was again the target up forward booting 5 goals with BA and Seven goal Slobin winning the ball through the mid-dle. This week the boys face a big test against finals contenders Moorebank. Under 18‘s had the bye and will face East Coast this week in what should be a big test. The young Wolves will look to gain revenge after an 8 point defeat last time the two sides faced each other. Finally, thanks for the continued support of our major sponsor the Hotel Steyne and main support sponsors Bendigo Bank ( Freshwater Community Bank ) and Bray's IGA Allambie Heights and Collaroy.

As we head into round 13 things are getting a little clearer at the top of the ladder. With Balmain defeating Sydney Uni last week, they deserve their spot on top but the Eagles are yet to face the resurgent Dockers and that wont happen until Round 16 so until then, the Eagles must continue their winning ways to ensure the best possible outcome come finals time. To do this, we must overcome Pennant Hills today which is never an easy task. Whilst many at the Eagles were excited about the prospect of playing at the Demons new home ground, especially some who used to call it their home, we must head back to the unique Ern Holmes oval to face the cross town rivals. Pennant Hills have had a mixed season so far but still hang on to a top 5 berth and with that, will always pose a threat. The first meeting of the two sides saw a 73 point win to the Eagles but that was back in round 6. Keep an eye on the two pillars at the front of the pack, Vlatko and Doyle who will look to use the ‗straightening‘ factor of Ern Holmes to their advantage. It will be a similar battle in Div 1 with the Eagles desperate to record a win to stay in touch with the finals pack. The boys cur-rently sit in 5th spot, but need to start stringing together the wins to ensure September action. And it is first v third in the Premier Cup with a tight battle almost guaranteed as the Eagles Colts look to remain undefeated so far in 2011. After some heartbreaking defeats to both the Div 3 side and Challenge Cup, they will look to make Bruce Purser their own today as they take on UTS and Manly Warringah. Both games are against strong opposition and the boys will need to be better than their best to grab the points.

Last week, for the second week in a row our Premier Divi-sion team fell over the line in a thriller, this time hanging on for dear life to hold out UNSW-ES and take a 5-point win. It was the final act in a marathon day of footy that saw our First Division and Under 18s teams take out victories while our Third Division side worked hard but went down to the Bulldogs. The Premier Division and Under 18s teams sit inside the top five, and will be looking to continue their winning form to take part in this year‘s finals. Our First Division team has hit some form over the last few weeks; and have got back to within striking distance of the finals. It‘s been a learning experience for our Third Division team, but their efforts and determination can‘t be faulted in what‘s been a challenging season. It‘s another blockbuster Super Saturday at Gore Hill this week, taking on opposition from south of the bridge. Our Third Division and First Division teams have morning matches against Southern Power, before our Under 18s and Premier Division teams take on St George. And a reminder that Saturday 16th July is Back to Bears Day. It‘s a day when we reflect on the rich history of our club. This year marks the 50th, 20th and 10th anniversary of North Shore premierships, and several of our legends from seasons past will be joining us. Come to Gore Hill Oval on the day for what is sure to be a celebration of our sensa-tional game of footy, and of heroes past and present. Good luck to all players and officials for this week‘s games. The Power are again on the road this weekend with important matches against North Shore (First & Reserve Grade), Camden (3rd Grade), Holroyd (Under 18‘s) and Balmain (womens). Last weekend was a good weekend for the Power with strong wins for both First & Reserve Grades against East Coast and Third Grade against Mac Uni. Unfortu-nately the 18‘s went down to a fast finishing Dockers side and the women were beaten by UNSW. The First Grade match against East Coast was a very important one in terms of ladder position and the Power started strongly kicking 4 goals in the opening quarter to set up a good advantage at the first change. The second quarter however saw the side dropped right away and let East Coast back into the game to only lead by 1 goal at half time. A return to the Powers game plan in the 2nd half saw them stretch the lead and run out 29 point winners. Phil Hamer was as tough as ever and was ably assisted by the star studded backline including Aggetts and Cookie while Murph, Cluffy and Al kicked 2 goals each. The Div 3 clash between the Power and East Coast was a very important one for both sides with the win-ner to hold onto 5th place on the ladder. The Power started the stronger however were wasteful in front of goals and went into the first break only 10 points. A very even three quarters then followed with no team able to break away but a goal late in the game to the Power sealed a very important 12 point win. Harley finished the day with 4 goals while Lyndon produced some great marks to be one of the best along with Butch and Shaneo. The two wins set the tone for a great bus trip home… The Power are pleased to introduce the latest partner

The Macquarie Warriors are back on track after a fantastic win in Division 1 last weekend in the annual JB Cup fixture against Sydney University. The Warriors dug deep to honour the legendary John "Rookie" Benson after whom the JB Cup is named, to run out 74 point victors! Despite fighting hard to the end, the Ressies couldn't get up over Uni in Division 3, whilst the Division 5 Warriors fell at the hands of Southern Power. However, it was business as usual for the Warriors in Division 4, continuing their undefeated run at the top of the ladder, witholding a strong Manly side to make it 11-0 for the season. This week, Divisions 1 & 3 will take on UNSW/ES at Village Green on Sunday, whilst the Div 5 Warri-ors travel to Pioneer Park to take on Saints afc on Satur-day. The Div 4 boys will enjoy a well earned BYE.

Macquarie University has seven teams in the Sydney AFL competition, including four sen-ior men’s teams, two U18’s sides and a Women’s team. Training continues on Tues-days and Thursdays at University Oval, North Ryde and new players are always welcomed.

Two round trips in the car totalling over 250 kms saw the Drag-ons play at Richmond on Saturday and Kellyville on Sunday. Unlike the previous weekend the sum of the results was a zero but there was a lot to like. Ressies got off to their all too familiar disastrous first quarter and then played some really good footy but the game was over at the first break. The Under 18‘s were soundly beaten by a very good ECE Under 18 but the dragon spirit was certainly evident. Despite the score the young dragons kept trying and better times will come. And so by twilight on Sunday we were wondering how the young dragons in first grade would stand up to the team looking to win the competition for the third year straight. The ECE bodies were big but so was the fight in the Dragons. On many occasions it looked like the Eagles would run away with the game but con-stant pressure by the dragons would result in turnovers and then goals. It certainly was a step in the right direction and a much more competitive game than the first time the two teams meet. The development was obvious for all to see. Our next full round of home matches is Saturday 9 July when once again we will try to run the Ladies Day and the Back to St George Day. Probably worth getting out the umbrella again! Put Saturday 30 July in your diaries for the St George Reunion Dinner to be held at the St George Masos. Not only is this a great chance to catch up and swap stories but it also our major fund raising event for the year. More details to follow. Thanks also to our sponsors Presfast and the St George Masos who always look after us and without whom finances would be even tighter.

Camden made strong starts in both their second and fifth divi-sion clashes against Manly on Saturday at Weldon Oval but failed to bring home the points in both grades. Both games were bruising encounters, with Manly‘s fitness and strength in the middle of the ground proving the difference. Highlights for the Cats included a strong roving performance by Bryan Agius with Mark Haltal running strongly off the wings. Nick Hills provided the glue for the club across the backline picking off many marks before sending the ball forward. Ben Laid also performed solidly in an unfamiliar forward line role while Heath Kearns and Tommy Glynn added pep through the centers all day. In fifth division, solid games were had by Lee Delacy, Julian Wymer and Scott Jones. Now out of finals contention, the Cats are focusing on a strong run home to Spring and cementing the growth in its ranks over the year. With a young side still in development, the club may shake things up a bit before the end of the year, testing out players in new roles and opening up opportunities for junior players seeking to challenge for a first grade spot.

AFTER two fantastic victories at home in crucial matches last weekend, the Nor-West Jets will be looking to back up with a couple of challenging road trips as the club is split to either end of the city today. The seniors will be looking to consolidate their newly acquired position in the Division Two top five with a dan-ger match against Camden at Harrington Park, a team that simply cannot be taken lightly with a big scalp under their credit on their home deck already this season. The reserves played their best football of the year, and probably a fair bit longer to land a big upset over third placed UTS to move clear of the relegation zone, but it won‘t mean much if they can‘t back it up and resurrect their finals‘ hopes against another top five team in UNSW-ES at Village Green today. The Bulldogs set Nor-West‘s horror first half of the year in motion when they made the Jets look silly in round one and most in Division Four circles will probably expect them to repeat the dose – the challenge is for the Jets to maintain the hunger Everyone in the club would like to send a huge Richmond Quartet welcome to Amity Jayne Butcher and congratulate Naomie Dwyer and Owen Butcher on the safe arrival of their second child, a little sister for Dallas, at the Hawkesbury Hospital last Friday. Great to see all are doing well, especially Dildo, going on reports from RGs last Saturday night! The club would also like to congratulate Nick Edwards on mak-ing his senior debut against St George on the weekend. At just 15, Nick shows a lot of talent and has worked hard on the track to earn his opportunity – he fitted in extremely well and showed he has a big future. A date to put in your diary is Saturday, July 16, after the return clash with Penrith, when racing‘s finest regalia will come out to play for the Blue and White Slipper at the Richmond Club – see Jo Elder for more details, while another of our great sponsors, Delishus Tapas Bar and Spanish Restaurant, will be hosting an International Beer Tasting Night on Wednesday, July 20. Also keep in mind that the Nor-West Jets will be catering for this year‘s Sydney AFL lower division finals‘ series, so it will be all hands on deck for all six matches over four weeks in August-September – more details to come.
