2016 AFL National Diversity Championships
Shepparton25-29 September 2016
INTRODUCTION
The 2016 AFL National Female Diversity Championships were held in Shepparton from 25 to 29 September hosted by AFL Goulburn Murray in partnership with Greater Shepparton City Council, the Victorian Government, the AFL, Rio Tinto and Australia Post.
The week long round-robin Championships consisted simultaneously of the All Nations Cup (multicultural) and Kickstart (indigenous) tournaments being run side by side. The Championships overall also provide a pathway into the Australian Woomeras (indigenous) and Medleys (multicultural) programs.
The Championships involved over 200 participants from Indigenous and Multicultural backgrounds coming together in Shepparton to compete at the week-long tournament, with an additional 70 plus Indigenous and Multicultural coaches, umpires, managers, physios and trainers as support staff.
The cultural and social benefits beyond the games were significant with cultural exchanges, education sessions featuring personal excellence training, pathway opportunities and personal story telling all included in the event schedule for the participants.
All coaches at the tournament were also involved in a coach education program led by former AFL Coach Brian Royal and AFL Coaching Development Manager Lawrie Woodman.
The umpires were also involved in the education component of the tournament with members of the AFL Goulburn Murray Diversity Umpire Academy and the Goulburn Valley Football Umpires Association working alongside the umpires from each competing State and sharing experiences and learnings.
The U16 Kickstart tournament saw seven teams compete in the 15-a-side competition with Northern Territory looking to defend their title they won in the 2015 Championships. Alongside the Northern Territory, Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales/ACT entered teams with Queensland defeating Northern Territory in a high quality final on the last day.
In the All Nations Cup, girls born overseas are eligible to enter and the 2016 tournament was the first of its kind. The competition featured nine players on the field with Northern Territory, NSW/ACT, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia all vying to be crowned the first All Nations Cup winners. The passion and enthusiasm was a great highlight in this competition with Queensland holding sway over a determined Victoria in a tight and desperate Grand Final played in heavy rain.
At the completion of the tournament two National Squads were announced with initial squads of 30 selected for the Woomeras (Australian Female Indigenous Team) and Medleys (multicultural) programs with both squads then involved in elite training, personal development and a series of matches.
It is an exciting time for Female football in Australia with the launch of the AFL Womens League in 2017 and this tournament will very quickly established itself as a crucial part of the player pathway.
AFL Goulburn Murray would like to thank all event partners for their support of this significant event with particular thanks to Ali Fahour, Narelle Long and Natasha Pucella from the AFL, Megan Treacy, Anthony Nicolaci and the ground staff from Greater Shepparton City Council, James Macleod and Ian Goldrick from the Goulburn Valley Football Umpires Association, Ted Lindon, Melissa Wells and other staff of AFL Goulburn Murray, Lauren Bordin from the Shepp News, Bailey Opie our photographer, AFL Multicultural Community Ambassador Ratna Gleeson who organised our multicultural community volunteers and all others who played their part in what was an extremely successful tournament.

TOURNAMENT OPERATIONS
Venues
Due to extremely inclement weather and minor flooding of Mooroopna Recreation Reserve a decision was made in the days leading into the event to move the first day’s play to Rumbalara and the second and third day’s play to Deakin Reserve. The Grand Finals were still to be held at Deakin Reserve.
Whilst this created some significant headaches at the time the work of Greater Shepparton City Council staff ensured the quality of the event was not compromised, in fact the new structure brought both tournaments onto the same playing surface which allowed for night games to be introduced to add value to the participant experience.
Rumbalara Recreation Reserve
Rumbalara Football Netball Club is an Aboriginal community run sporting club located just north of the Shepparton Sports Precinct. It is dedicated to strengthening the community and bringing families together through strong vibrant leadership.
Rumbalara has created an environment where Indigenous people, especially youth are inspired and encouraged to actively participate in the sporting community that Rumbalara provides.
