HAT IS A HYBRIDWebster’s Dictionary’s definition

of a Hybrid is: An offspring of two dissimilar plants or of two animals

of different races, breeds, varieties, or species; something made up of mixed

origin or make-up. The definition of Medical: Relating to the study or

practice of medicine. The definition of Spa: A thermal spring: Treatments relating to water.

The original Spas were destination Spas at luxury resorts around the world, many with thermal springs. The current “Day Spa” evolved from this concept in the 1990’s, as the “Baby Boomer” was getting older. They wanted results from all the sun damage that had occurred and massage and relaxation from their crazy busy schedules.   

Since the Mid to late 1990’s the concept of a Med Spa has been popping up all over the United States. Most experiences are no different then the environ-ment at the Doctors office. The concept was birthed when injectables such as Botox and Dermal Fillers were developed. These injections must be adminis-tered by a physician or a nurse that is working under a physician. 

The term Med Spa is misleading because there are many so called Med Spas that do not have a relation-ship with a physician. This began when Laser Hair Removal was introduced also in the Mid 1990’s. In most states in the USA laser treatments are not regu-lated and anyone can do them. Regulations vary from state to state. In Texas you must be certified to do La-ser Hair Removal by the Texas Department Of State Health Services-Radiation Safety Licensing Branch. This regulatory mandate was put in place only sev-eral years ago. There are many other laser treatments that salons and spas are doing that are not regulated!
