In Luther’s Own Words
As I think of Martin Luther’s traditionally heroic phrase, “Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God,” I find myself thinking, “Here I stagger, I can do no other. Help Me God!” Luther was responding to the evidence of his books stacked on a desk and being asked if he would recant what he had said in them. My response is to Luther’s books stacked on my desk and wondering why I thought I could teach his Three Treatises and do a Sermon Series on the Augsburg Confession? I adore Martin Luther. I relate to his earthiness and tendency to make snide remarks. I relate to the struggle of wanting to make myself “right” before God and being overwhelmed with the grace that Jesus has already made me “right.” That is a gift I open over and over again in delight and wonder. I also recognize that Martin Luther was no saint and not perfect. We don’t have to make all that he said “gospel” or truth. I heard that outside Wittenberg Castle people were protesting the celebration of Martin Luther due to his anti-Semitic statements toward the end of his life. How many of you have read Luther beyond the Small Catechism? It is fascinating to read his development of thought and his progressively more direct attacks on the abuses that he perceived in the Roman Catholic Church. His works are great history as well as cutting edge theology. Beth has included a link to purchase Martin Luther’s Three Treatises on the next page. I encourage you to purchase the book or an online version and begin reading To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation. The title already makes a tremendous historical statement of Luther’s world of politics and religion. We’ll begin our studies on Wednesday, September 13. There will be an adult class at 1 PM and at 6:15PM after the 5:30 meal. This is an excellent opportunity to bring a friend to hear a bit of history and the world wide impact of a monk trying to find a loving God.

Three Treatises Adult Education

Starting September 13
Beginning Wednesday, September 13, Pastor Cindy will facilitate discussion on three of Martin Luther’s most important writings: “To the Christian Nobility”, “The Babylonian Captivity of the Church”, and “The Freedom of a Christian.”
The Three Treatises were written by Luther over four months in 1520 and served to set the focus of the reformation. While each treatise addresses a particular topic, they all address the state of the Church and the proper response needed on behalf of the gospel. Together they describe, prescribe, and seek to alleviate the burdens coming from Rome, while seeking to reform their faith by a return to scripture.
In the first treatise, “To the Christian Nobility” of the German Nations, Luther described and sought to reform the authority structure of the pope that was used to protect the papacy from any challenge, including those from the political sphere. By demonstrating that the pope has built walls around its office and power to prevent any reform, Luther calls the German Nobility to respond.
In his second treatise, “The Babylonian Captivity of the Church,” Luther addresses the hold Rome had over the sacraments. Luther critiques the sacramental system and its abuses, focusing primarily on communion and its withholding of the cup to the laity, transubstantiation, and the sacrifice of the mass. In the end, Luther keeps only the table and baptism as sacraments, reworks the role of confession, and eliminates the other four sacraments as ungrounded in scripture. Throughout his description of both the table and baptism, Luther emphasizes personal faith as a necessity. He even goes so far as to affirm faith in infants to legitimate their baptism. Luther’s final treatise is “The Freedom of a Christian.” Its central thesis is that faith in God through Christ frees the believer from sin and enables them to love and serve their neighbor.

Donating to Shriner’s Hospital
Advent’s service project for “God’s Work. Our Hands.” is oriented toward children this year. We will gather donations for the Shriner’s Hospital in Sacramento because they provide care for children’s orthopedic, burn care, spinal cord injury, and cleft lip/palate issues regardless of a family’s ability to pay.
Due to infection control and allergies, they CANNOT accept used toys of any kind. This includes stuffed animals that have not been played with but have been on display or on shelves in a home They also ask to NOT include perishable food items in our donations and to leave gifts unwrapped so it is faster and easier to identify gifts and distribute them to patients.
They list hand sewn items such as pillow cases and blankets are in demand since every new pa-tient receives pillow cases and blankets upon admission. They suggest donating those items in teen and kid friendly prints. Pillow cases should be standard dimensions and can be handmade or store bought. Blankets can be fleece or cotton, hand-sewn, hand-tied, or store-bought.
Our gifted quilters have agreed to buy fleece and set it up so that ALL MEMBERS OF ADVENT LUTHERAN can participate
in tying at least 1 tie on blankets that we will donate.
In addition, we encourage members to donate some of the following items listed by Shriner’s as items in demand. Note that they cannot accept donations of toys with weapons, violent, flames, fire, or religious themes.

Dear Advent Family,
I was sitting in my chair in my tent last weekend during a rainstorm and thinking about how great it was to be up in the mountains for the church camp out at Fallen Leaf Lake. We all had a great time in spite
of the rain. Several of us were playing Yahtzee after hiking to the lake, or around the campground. Tanya found the only place cell phones worked, on a bench outside the shower building, so we were able to get messages from home or other campers who were not making it up the hill. Something about a total eclipse coming soon, maybe?
While my dogs and I were enjoying the rain I got to thinking about what I was going to write about for this newsletter. I had no ideas. On Wednesday Pastor Cindy suggested that I write about what goes on behind the scenes at Advent. I remembered the years I went to the Catholic Church (until I was 31) and how we went to church and went home…nothing else. In 1978 I joined Advent as part of a large family, 2 sons, 3 step-sons, and 1 step-daughter and a husband. I soon was teaching Sunday school or doing Children’s Church Time. Remember that? We took the children out during the sermon time. and brought them back after stories and singing to have communion with their families. Many years later when the kids were grown and I was single again, I joined the Choir and Fellowship Committee. That was the real beginning of my involvement with Advent. The first time I was on Council I was completely silent. I never asked questions or gave my opinions. Over the next 20 years having been on Council several times, I learned to participate. This time I was elected your President. It is exciting and scary doing this job. Writing this article for the newsletter, running meetings, being involved in the 3 churches doing things together, and being part of the Citrus Heights HART organization are all part of it. As head of the Worship and Music Committee I work with Dave and Pastor to plan the liturgies and music for our Sunday services. Other groups that work undercover are our Call Committee, busy taking care of the business of finding a new pastor for us, the Fellowship Committee planning and doing the work of funerals and social events, Christian Ed doing the Sunday and Wednesday education programs for children and adults as well as VBS, and Altar Guild, who sets up the paraments, flowers, and communion supplies 2 times each week. There are so-o-o many of us who give of their time and talents to keep our church running smoothly. If you are not involved in anything at this time, please think about what you can do to work “behind the scenes”. It is so rewarding.

"Excuse me, ma'm, what are you listening to?" The question came from behind me as I was heading home from my morning walk /coffee purchase. As usual I had my headphones on and was listening to NPR's Morning Edition. I shared that information, curious as to where the conversation might go from there.
A story did evolve: the questioner was a 40'ish, neatly dressed young man with a ruddy (sunburned?) complexion, carrying a backpack. When I told him what program was on he replied he used to listen to that station when he had a job and an apartment.
We chatted for awhile. He was extremely polite, clearly eager to continue the conversation but perhaps harboring fears that he was being judged, that he might not "deserve" ordinary human interaction. He did share bits of personal information -- he grew up in this general community; advice his father gave him as a youngster; his conviction that his future was not defined by his current circumstances. As we parted I said that I'd enjoyed our interaction and wished him well. He replied with the exclamation "God is good, I am blessed".
It was not the first time he made that declaration during our contact. This encounter left me with many questions: What did his day, not to mention his future hold? Why was such a challenging day-to-day existence his current path, not mine (or my family's)? What more could /should I have offered him besides conversation? Would I be able to thank God for his blessings and trust my future to Him in the face of such uncertainty? How come I didn't invite him to worship with us at Advent next Sunday?
On further reflection, it occurred to me that this young man shares many parallels with the situation, we, the members of Advent are experiencing during our congregation's "in between" time. What are we listening to? What could unexpected sources of connection and reflection contribute to the affirmation and growth of our faith and the practice of our faith? How and to whom can we declare that we are blessed and actively share such blessings? May we be open to unexpected encounters and blessings as we move to call a permanent pastor and affirm our faith declaration: "God's Work. Our Hands."

PBS gives the Reformation television exposure when it airs:
“Martin Luther: The Idea that Changed the World.”
This one-time only, nationwide showing is a great reason for congregations, families and individuals to gather with community and friends and explore Luther’s lasting impact on Christianity. The show is also available for private showings for those unable to watch that evening.
The Heartstrings Chemo Hat makers are a real blessing to those suffering with cancer. Pat Galland was a huge blessing to our group as she generously donated money for yarn each time we met. With the loss of our dear Pat, several people have come through to provide money for yarn. We want to thank Herum and AnnaLee Bjork as well as Lois Sellers for a generous donation the first day we let the need be known. Several of Pat’s friends from Curves donated to Heartstrings in Pat’s memory and now Keith Johnson and our wonderful Stern-Johnson Bike Club has made a very nice donation in memory of Pat. There are others who have indicated they will help us before each meeting. We thank all of you so very much. You are generously participating in our outreach to those in need.

"How time flies when we're having fun." This past weekend we were camping at 6300 ft at Lake Tahoe with a very special group of Adventurers. With only 13 campers and 8 day visitors, this year's campout was a smaller-group ministry. Those of us who were there had wonderful fellowship amidst a very different weather year. Yes, we had a downpour event complete with thunder and lightning mid-afternoon on Saturday, before the pot-luck dinner. And, during the dinner we had some ultra-light rain drops complete with low, intense sunshine rays and a rainbow. Here are some of this year's highlights: 1. This year's location: all who attended this year's campout had only good to
say about the National Forest campground at Fallen Leaf Lake. 2. This year we had a 5 minute walk from our campsite to the relatively quiet
Fallen Leaf Lakeshore and about a 20 minute walk to Lake Tahoe at the Tallac Historic Site.
3. The extra night again made this event more worthwhile and meaningful. Having both Friday and Saturday to enjoy Lake Tahoe, go sightseeing, take a bike ride or just enjoy this spot of Nature was wonderfully rewarding.
4. There were 13 campers, 21 at the Sat evening's potluck and 16 people at Sunday's worship service.
5. Worship this year benefited from Tom Kent with his guitar and vocal talent at Saturday night's sing-along around the campfire and again in support at Sunday morning's worship. Plus our having Chuck Urban lead us in worship Sunday morning.

Mercy San Juan Hospital Volunteer Guild is looking for your help.
We ask each volunteer to give 4 hours twice a month.
Volunteers help the hospital by selling in the Gift Shop, escorting patients and visitors, facilitating registration and surgery, as well as, assisting in NICU.
We also have bake sales, etc. to fund adult scholarships and special projects for the hospital.
