Grand Marshals of the Sultan Shindig Parade The Sky Valley Chamber of Commerce is proud

Grand Marshals for the 2013 Shindig Parade. They were nominated due to their outstanding community service to all of the communities in the Sky Valley. The work they do has had a tremendous impact on our most vulnerable residents. Their enthusiasm and tireless commitment to helping those in need inspires everybody around them. When they see a problem, they also see an opportunity to get involved. They are action orientated and effective. Woody is President of the Sultan Lions Club. Together they lead this small army of good deed doers who have an astonishing capacity for helping whenever possible. When they see a problem, they make a plan and then spring into action. The Lions have many ongoing projects that benefit the Valley. They are the care takers of the

involves trucking water to feed the plants 2-‐3 times per week. They hold monthly food & money drives for the Sultan Food Bank. They also beautify some of the flower beds in front of City Hall. For years, they have partnered with the Sky Valley Chamber of Commerce for the Easter Egg Hunt, Winterfest, numerous potlucks and gatherings. They are the first people we call when we need help; they always arrive early and stay late to help clean up. The really inspirational work the Lions do involves the lower income kids in the Valley. Under the leadership of Judy and Woody, the Lions have pooled their resources to provide clothing, toiletries, books and toys to the kids who need it the most. Three years ago, Judy and Woody heard a heart wrenching story about a child that was taken into protective custody. They were saddened to learn that the child was unable to pack her special belongings. They worked with our local police department and set out to raise money to give these kids more. Thanks to their efforts, police officers have backpacks stuffed with goods in their trunks to give to kids during those situations. Soon they had collected more backpacks and goods than the police could distribute, so they went to the Elementary School. The staff pounced on the floss, toothbrushes, soaps and clothing. The staff explained that many kids do not have access to these items at home. As they unpacked the boxes, they asked if they

had been in contact with the good people up at Gold Bar Elementary. So Judy and Woody rumbled up the highway to Gold Bar in their distinct grey truck. Again they learned about many kids in need, so they set out to collect items for those kids as well. They also delivered books to replenish the school libraries and support read at home events. While they were unloading at Gold Bar, somebody asked them if they had checked in with in

that makes the Valley so special. If you would like to work with these special people, they are currently recruiting new members. If you would like to support the important work they do, please donate the following items to their collection bin at the VIC:

Backpacks! Backpacks! Backpacks! Tennis Shoes: The kids at GBE cannot participate in PE if they do not have tennis shoes. All kid sizes gratefully accepted. Toiletries: Toothpast & brushes, hair care, wash-‐cloths, soap Sweatpants: For the younger kids at school who have an accident or get muddy at recess. Jackets & Hoodies

They also collect cell phones for a Snohomish county domestic violence shelter. Other items they can put to use are used glasses and hearing aids. Please visit their booth at Shindig, Gold Dust Days and Winterfest all the money raised during these events goes towards these special projects. We congratulate Judy, Woody and the Lions club and thank them all for their dedicated service.

The year was 1951 when Frank, just out of junior college, grabbed up a chain saw and went to work in the woods with his dad and two brothers. In the process of buying the Startup farm where he and Nancy lived these many years, he worked the raspberry fields on the farm, milked the dairy cows and worked in the woods. The evening hours were spent in the

the tools of his livelihood. Clarence Yarnell, owner of the little Startup Store, saw Frank and his young family through the long, cold winters when the woods were shut down. Groceries were put on the

and Clarence always gifted a quart of ice cream for the kids at store visits. Clarence, was a life-‐long friend. This was the culture of the Sky Val-‐ley logging community. The Roesler Logging Co, with the dedica-‐tion and perseverance of its four owners, evolved into the Roesler Timber Co.,Inc. A solid employer in the Valley with the big green trucks, loaded with logs and sporting the Roesler Timber logo, rumbling up and down the highway. The Shake & Shingle Mill in full opera-‐tion, with boxcars waiting on a Sultan railroad siding to be loaded with cedar shakes, provid-‐ing roofing materials to a housing industry across the entire country, including Alaska and Hawaii. Cedar logs, so large the 10x10 access port to the mill saws could not accommodate them, were delivered by Roesler trucks to the mill. Frank has been deeply involved in com-‐munity and children. He spent countless hours in the woods with his own boys and other Sul-‐tan high school kids promoting a sustainable resource, as they replanted the logged off areas. He worked with families and kids to provide covered bleachers at the football field, an elec-‐tronic scoreboard mounted and night lights in-‐stalled. Years later, still volunteering and donat-‐

ing, Roesler heavy equipment loaned and oper-‐ated in preparation for the new fields at the Sul-‐tan high school. He also dedicated 20+ years to the Sultan School Board where he served a sig-‐nificant amount of time as chairman of the board. Frank & Nancy, both founding members, have been deeply involved with the Highway 2 Safety Coalition. Frank was a pilot. He learned to fly to further the business and for his own personal pleasure. The appearance at Roesler Timber of the Huey helicopter and the Cessna airplane were further testimony of his business acumen and love for the great outdoors. Entering the 8th decade of life, semi re-‐tired, Frank remains strong and active. He wields a chainsaw easily if needed, and knows and recognizes every tree of the forest if asked. The Roesler Timber Company continues to maintain office space at the original company site on highway 2 east of Startup. Sixty one years of involvement and promotion of the in-‐dustry and his community. We are proud to recognize Frank Roesler as our 30th Anniversary Shindig Log-‐ging Marshal.

The new Great Northern & Cascade Rail-road is rolling down the tracks in hopes making happy memories for families from far and wide. The one-eighth scale railroad runs on a half-mile-long loop around the old railroad yard in Skykomish. Riders straddle mini cars while a surprisingly powerful electric engine pulls them past the restored Skykomish Rail Station and through tunnels and other features meant to repre-sent the original route over Stevens Pass. City Council member Kevin Weiderstrom and his band of volunteers spent many hours build-ing the rail bed and laying track for the project. Lo-cal companies donated landscaping materials and other features and now the train is ready to pull out of the station for its first free rides for the public. The historic depot has been placed back in its rightful place, right in the middle of the GN&CR

rail line! The depot is in the process of being com-pletely restored to its former glory and is the next big project for the industrious train enthusiasts of the Sky Valley.

The free train will run on weekends all summer!

Sultan Education Foundation Celebrating 20 Years! The Sultan Education Foundation was formed in 1993 in order to help Sultan graduates achieve the next level of their training by offering scholarships and also to support Sultan Public School students by offering classroom enhancement grants. These grants help teachers provide opportu-nities for students that might not otherwise be avail-able to them. Sometimes these grants purchase items that fulfill a very basic need like microscopes. Sometimes they give teachers a chance to expose their students to a once in a lifetime experience like

support students from kindergarten to 12th grade. To celebrate our 20th Anniversary the Foun-dation will be hosting a Golf Tournament on Sep-tember 14th

The Sultan Education Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible. We invite you to join our cause by mak-ing a contribution or by deciding to include the Foundation in your will. Bringing the grand total up to $325,620.00! Together we really are making a difference! Debbie Copple, President
