Figures and Tables
*If a figure or table is required for your paper, there are many small details which vary depending on the instance. For case by case knowledge, either reference the Turabian manual or a professor.
General guidelines are as follows:Place the figure/table as near the text which refers to it as
possible, but at the end of the paragraph. If the figure/table will not fit in the remaining space of the
current page, insert it at the top of the next page.Title the figure/table according to your list of Illustrations.Place the title below a figure but above a table.Explanation/title should be single spaced and flush left.
Figure reference
Figure located after paragraph relating to topic
Figure title flush left, single spaced, and below figure
Appendices
*When further information is required, yet does not directly pertain to the thesis/dissertation or is too large to insert into the text (such as a figure or table), an appendix may be used. (example to follow)
*All tables should be placed in the appendix when they do not fix into the text or are only vaguely related; however, only figures of a chart or graph nature should be found here.
*If a photograph, map, or other figure of similar nature is too large to place in the text or only vaguely related to the topic, do not place it in an Appendix. Instead, add a separate section prior to the Appendix known as “Illustrations”. Follow the same basic layout for information found in the pretext section, except the page numbers are to continue on from the main text.
Appendices
Format of an appendix:If all the information is of similar type, label the section
“Appendix” and insert the information accordingly. If it is not (such as a survey and a diagram), place each
type into a separate Appendix, adding either an Roman numeral or letter after the heading,
“Appendix”, of each section.Leave two lines between the heading and content. All explanation text added by the writer should follow the
guidelines of the main body text.Surveys may be single spaced for size purposes.Figures/tables must follow the same guidelines as those
which fit into the main body of the text.
