Resilience for Our TimesInstructor: Kalama ReuterOverwhelmed by issues of climate change or injustice? Looking for a way to navigate toward a sustainable future? Many of us are finding ways to become a part of a new story, an active renewal of our willingness to serve the greater good. Join others in the Work That Reconnects us with our gratitude and our pain for the world. This is grounded in knowing that we are all in-terconnected and we can find a heartfelt way to catalyze the needed shifts in ourselves and our society. This three week workshop draws on Joanna Macy’s healing synthesis of head and heart to keep us engaged in the challenges we are facing today. Come for community, inspira-tion and support. You may experience interbe-ing, access deep timeless wisdom, acknowledge your strengths and discover your personal call to action. We can turn this crisis into opportunity. Kalama Reuter has experienced the Work That Reconnects as a valuable container for a per-sonal process of staying present in the heart-break of these times. As a rare plant monitor, she has feared for species scorched by last summers heat wave. As a Mama Bear, she has mourned the deaths of the salmon. As a Co-lumbia Gorge climate activist, she has spoken at hearings for the environment and sustainable practices.Location: Coe Building - Room 3 - Conference RoomClass Fee: $30

The Big One – What You Should Know About a Cascadia Subduction Zone EarthquakeInstructor: Barb AyersOregon and USGS geologists agree that we are overdue for a magnitude 8.0 to 9.0 Cascadia subduction earthquake along the Oregon coast, impacting the I-5 corridor from Northern California to Canada. The gorge is not immune – our own impacts would be significant. Geologists calculate the odds of the "Big One" occurring in the next 50 years at roughly one in three. Forty-five years ago, no one even knew this earthquake risk existed. In partnership with Hood River County Emergency Manager Barb Ayers, join Althea Rizzo, Geologic Hazards Program Coordinator for Oregon Emer-gency Management for a riveting presentation to hear about the impacts of the “Big One” and what we can do to prepare our communities, our busi-nesses, and our homes. How seriously you and your community are impacted and how quickly you recover from the next large Oregon earthquake is largely a matter of what you know and how well you prepare for the inevitable. The aim of the Sufi is to recog-nize ourselves beyond distinctions and differences as part of one Beingness. “If your heart is large enough, there is nothing it will not accommodate.” -- Inayat Khan, who brought Sufism to the west in 1911. Lyme Disease 101Instructor: Pam RitzenthalerThe devastating effects of Lyme Disease have been experienced by over 200 of your neighbors within a 10 mile radius of Hood River. Learn how to recognize the symptoms and avoid the risks of this locally endemic disease. Early diagnosis is imperative to a cure. Arm yourself with knowledge that can help prevent you and others from becom-ing sick with this potentially long-term debilitating and costly illness. Catch it within two months of infection and cure rates are excellent and inexpen-sive. Wait longer - because of misdiagnosis or pro-crastination - and cure is less likely while disease management becomes the prognosis. Every Mul-tiple Sclerosis symptom is a Lyme symptom. Lyme is commonly misdiagnosed as MS, Epstein-Barr Virus, Cytomeglalovirus, ALS or autism. This class will also provide instruction on proper removal of ticks to help prevent transmission of the bacterial infection from the tick's throat into your body.Location: May Street Elementary School - Cafete-riaClass Fee: $5

Massage- Couples Workshop: Healing each other with touch and talkInstructor: Roberta GrantThis is a class about couples support using modalities of touch and talk-massage, assertive compassionate communication skills, and stress management techniques (with some parenting tips if interested). Life as a couple is stressful in the 21st Century. Being married about 11 years, raising a family, and working as a professional, Roberta understands from firsthand experience learning to balance the stresses of family life in the 21st Century. Additionally, working with cou-ples and other families, she has learned that with a little encouragement, support and compassion, many family conflicts and pain can be prevented. She has attended couples counseling herself

and acknowledges how helpful a little support can be. Although this is not a group counselling session, it is rather a couple support class. With a bit of effort, skills and awareness, this class can be conflict prevention and build the relationship with love and joy. Roberta offers her wisdom in a casual and comfortable manner. She encour-ages participation, open discussion, and practice. This class is interactive and experiential as well as educational. Other details: Confidentiality is kept within the group and if personal experiences need to be shared must be mutual between the couple. If someone is needing more support than the class has to offer, we can schedule a time for that in a privacy session as this is a public environment and not the best place for intense one-on-one attention.; Call Roberta 541-490-9794 for ques-tions or appointments.Location: Hood River Middle School - Room 209Class Fee: $50 per coupleBring to Class: pillows, therma rests, comfort-able clothing

Natural Solutions to Sleep ProblemsInstructor: Carola StepperINSOMNIA IS A SYMPTOM, not a stand-alone diagnosis or a disease you need a pill for! Sleep is a necessity of life. When sleep is interrupted, so is the body's ability to repair itself. Sleep medica-tions, either by prescription or over-the-counter are risky at best, and usually just cover up the underly-ing problem. At this workshop the hormonal and neurological causes of this problem will be dis-cussed as well as the natural solutions that have helped millions of sufferers. Oregon Humanities Conversation Project – Too Busy to RestInstructor: Lisa Naas CookIn America today, ask someone, “How are you?” and “busy” is a common response. Despite all of the digital devices designed to save time, many people still feel there is never enough. In an age when 24/7 connectivity, productivity, and efficien-cy often take priority, the boundary blurs between work and non-work, prompting the question, What is rest in our fast-paced, ever-connected world? This is the focus of “Too Busy to Rest: Boundar-ies and Balance in a Nonstop World,” a free event sponsored by Oregon Humanities statewide Con-versation Project with Lisa Naas Cook. Lisa Naas Cook has an MA in applied theology from Maryl-hurst University and a BS in natural resources from the Ohio State University. Her graduate work focused on the universal wisdom that the Jewish Sabbath offers for personal and planetary well-being in the modern world. Lisa writes and leads programs about sacred rest, intentional technol-ogy use, and the Universe Story in Hood River, Oregon.Location: HRICC Common Rooms- Columbia Gorge Community CollegeClass Fee: $0

QigongInstructor: Dave Martin, LAc EAMPQigong, translating as breathing skills, or energy skills, is a Chinese practice used for the protection of health with a history spanning over 3000 years. During qigong exercise the body is gently moved through all of its ranges of motion in movements coordinated with the breath and with a focused mental attitude. There is little striving; instead, staying relaxed and comfortable throughout the movements is of paramount importance. With daily repetition over time, the joints open, the legs become strong, the structure of the body is balanced and straightened, and organ function, including that of the nervous system and brain is improved. Tai Chi and Qigong, Energy and PrinciplesInstructor: Janet EssleySpring Term Special- Wild Goose Qigong! Tai chi practice is a form of moving meditation that devel-ops one's health and body strength through relax-ation and movement of the entire body. We will learn gentle movements that can be learned and repeated by themselves or strung together into a slow 'dance'. Qigong: These ancient Chinese exercises are excellent for improving health, reducing stress, and increas-ing mental focus, strength and balance. Cascade Mountain School: Farm to Table Bike Camp for Middle SchoolInstructor: Cascade Mountain SchoolJoin us for a residential summer camp for middle school students in Trout Lake, WA. Modeled after our fabulous farming adventure last summer, we will explore Trout Lake, WA, a quiet agricultural valley at the base of Mt. Adams in the Columbia River Gorge, for a fun week of farming and biking. Our ‘base camp’ will be Broad Fork Farms, a beautiful working organic farm. Each day we will bike to different farms and get our hands dirty helping out. Afternoons we will find time for recreation, relaxation, and enjoyment. In the evenings, we will create delicious meals from what food we’ve harvested during the day. During the week we will have a chance to learn about a diverse spectrum of agricul-ture–organic dairy, artisan cheese making, beekeep-ing, vegetable and herb growing, as well as pastured livestock for wool and meat production. As we work and play, we will have conversations about the challenges and opportunities of farming and dive into relevant sci-ence and policy topics. If you love food, the outdoors, to learn and try new things, and if you are curious about organic farming–this week is for you. The camp ends with a celebratory dinner for students and their fami-lies on the final evening. Families, please join us for a camp slideshow and 2pm Harvest lunch made by the course participants. 10 hours of Service credit avail-able. Aikido & Jodo- AdultInstructor: Neil LofgrenAikido can be translated as “The Way of Har-mony”, and is a peaceful approach to the ancient Japanese Budo traditions. It teaches fluid movements based on balance and posi-tioning. The Aikidoist learns to blend with an opponent’s energy and redirect it to render an attacker helpless through off-balances, joint locks, and throws. Jodo is a classical martial art, that uses a walking stick (jo) to defend against attack from a sword (ken). This art teaches students how to move efficiently and improve coordination and balance, gaining symmetry between left and right sides of the body. Stu-dents also learn the basics of Kendo, “The Way of the Sword”. GorgeBudo is a member dojo of Ecole de Budo RAJI International, a brother-hood of dojos in more than 15 countries across four continents who all follow the instruction of Jaff Raji Sensei from Rennes, France. Aikido- Kids (ages 5-12)Instructor: Neil LofgrenAikido is a Japanese martial art that teaches fluid movements based on balance and posi-tioning. It's a great art for kids because it is not

combative. We're not focused on kicking and punching, instead we're learning how to move our body in relationship to someone else's force, how to keep our balance while taking theirs, and how to fall down without getting hurt. Kids learn some Japanese words and concepts, but most importantly, they learn to coordinate and control their body through fun movement games and tumbling. Cascadia Gongfu ClubInstructor: Dave Martin LAc, MSOMQigong, translating as breathing skills, or en-ergy skills, is a Chinese practice used for the protection of health with a history spanning over 3000 years. During qigong exercise the body is gently moved through all of its ranges of motion in movements coordinated with the breath and with a focused mental attitude. There is little striving; instead, staying relaxed and comfort-able throughout the movements is of paramount importance. With daily repetition over time, the joints open, the legs become strong, the struc-ture of the body is balanced and straightened, and organ function, including that of the ner-vous system and brain is improved. NATSTA Kajukenbo Ages 5-15Instructor: Stephenie Going, Dave Martin LAc, MSOMStudents will acquire skills for personal cultiva-tion through East Asian martial arts and yoga. Our classes teach young people to maintain a calm, radiant spirit in the face of adversity, and to strive continually for emotional, physi-cal, and spiritual balance. Our students will gain discipline and self-respect for themselves and others while practicing physical exercises designed to build confidence and internal focus. By developing self-control and self-regulation, students will gain personal power and build positive perceptions of themselves. Through our practice, children learn how to be still, especially in times of chaos and fear, helping to gain confidence and to become more capable of handling conflict and disruption. This class will help students become more aware, and ground them into their physical bodies to experience the feeling of health – physically, emotionally, and mentally. They create an inner peace, and develop a strong ability to focus and learn. Our students cultivate the ability to listen to their hearts, minds, and bodies; developing a strong sense of self. Our Learn to Sail program features a wide variety of fun learning and recreational opportunities for begginner through advanced sailors. All classes are taught by US Sailing Instructors in our fleet of O’Pen BIC dinghies, Lasers and RS Fevas.

The stretch of river near Cascade Locks is an ideal small boat training ground with flat water, no crowds, and less wind during late afternoon/evening class times.

We teach all ages 10 through adult, (younger with permission), sailors are grouped by interest and skill level. No experience neccessary. Sailors should be able to swim and expect to get wet. Adult and Group lessons scheduled weekly.

Scholarships help youngsters in financial need get started. Cascade Locks residents are eligible for free lessons. Other scholarships are available upon request for school lunch eligible kids.

Join us for Opening Day on Saturday June 18. Every Thursday Night we host Open Community Sailing. Stop by and try our boats and grab a ride to see what fun sailing is.

Brave HeArt Journaling for YouthInstructor: Michelle YamamotoThe Brave HeArt Journaling for Youth program is a fun and adventurous combination of daily themed art projects combined with informal chitchats about how to navigate relationships such as to not take things personally, develop awareness in how we get angry or upset and how to process and resolve these experiences and to focus on believing and trusting in our-selves. The final contemplation of the week will be on “Selfie Culture” where the discussion will be on how to post and comment responsibly and how quickly things can go wrong if they aren’t mindful. Simple exercises such as using the breath, being still in self observation (other-wise known as meditation) are introduced and encouraged to use as tools to feel less stressed out or when they feel upset about something that happened in their day.The art supply fee of $20 includes: a Yinspi-rationArt meditation journal, a Brave HeArt Workbook and everything from aprons, brushes, water buckets, paints, stencils, stamps, mark-ers, ink sprays and a visual display of

Skateboard Art (10-16 years)Instructor: Michelle YamamotoInviting all shredders, skateboard lovers and art lovers who want to paint their own skateboard!”Art teacher, Michelle Yamamoto will first bring stu-dents through a composition graphic design pro-cess and as you can see from the attached photos from a skateboard art workshop Michelle held in Whistler, BC last March, the students chose ev-erything from landscape art to street graffiti style art with really fabulous results. There will be some emphasis on building drawing skills and there will be art demonstrations and lots of cool art supplies to help create some special textured effects.Once the drawings are completed, designs are transferred onto the skate deck with graphite and tracing paper and then painted with acrylics. A final coat of varnish renders the art surface sturdy for park riding or for looking nice hanging on the wall. The California made skateboard is included in supply costs and is the same shape of the big brand names so it will be really great with holes for mounting trucks already drilled. Educational - Youth

Driver Education - Oregon Teen Driver Training Institute- summerInstructor: Linda ClarkMandatory parents meeting July 5 at 6:00-7:30 pm. IMPORTANT INFORMATION - PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTINUING: Students MUST have a permit in order to register for this class. To meet the need for a driver educa-tion program, the Hood River County School District has contracted with the Oregon Driver Training Institute to provide classroom and behind-the-wheel driver's ed training. This course counts as 50 of the 100 hours re-quired for your teen to obtain their license. You must have a permit to take this class, but their is no requirement as to how long you have to have it. Driver test? What driver test? There are a ton of great reasons to enroll in driver ed classes, but the best one is, if you complete the course, that means you don’t have to take the DMV driver test to get your license! That’s right – you’re essen-tially excused from one of teen life’s most nerve-wracking rites of passage! Here’s how it works: Before getting your drivers' license: You need to have had an instruction permit for at least 6 months. You enroll in and successfully complete an ODOT-approved driver ed course. You can certify that you have at least 50 hours of driving experience with a driver who is older

than 21 and has had driving privileges for at least three years. You have to pass the written safe driving practices test at the DMV. Upon completion of an ODOT-approved driver ed course, your provider will issue a card certify-ing that you successfully met all class require-ments. When you present this card at the DMV while applying for a Provisional Driver License, the skills test is waived. That’s it! No more sleepless nights, no more dudes with clipboards – just a shiny new license to drive. See you in class! Registration and payment must be made through Community Education at the time of registration. This can be done on line at www.hrcommunityed.org Those without computer access may register 1009 Eugene Street. To register by phone, please have your credit card information available. Students registered for this program must not obtain their license prior to completing this program. Verification of eligibility may be performed prior to end of class. In addition to the online registration, your contact info will be forwarded to the Oregon Driver Train-ing Institute, High Street, Suite 160, Eugene, OR 97401. You may be required to complete additional paperwork required by the Oregon Driver Training Institute. Course Fee: The cost of the course is $335 for unlicensed minors and $545 for anyone 18 or older or licensed. Minors are able to take the course at a re-duced cost due to ODOT's reimbursement program. If the student: 1) fails to complete the class, or 2) turns 18 years of age prior to completion, or 3) attains his/her driver license prior to class completion, they are no longer eligible for reimbursement and therefore an additional $210 will automatically be charged. Course Non-Completion: If at the end of the course, a student has not completed all work in order to pass, a non-completion letter will be sent home explaining the reasons for the student not completing the course. The stu-dent will be given additional time to complete the necessary course work. If the class work has not been completed within the allotted time, the student will receive a failing grade. There are NO REFUNDS for this program. Stu-dent must bring a photo copy of their permit to the first class for our office records. Behind the Wheel is scheduled outside of the class-room and will take longer than the last day of class. We recommend approximately 10 hours of driving practice prior to this course. Classes are scheduled to be offered in September, January, April & July, depending on enrollment and instructor availability.Location: Coe Building - Room 3 - Conference RoomClass Fee: $355 -15-17 years $565- 18 yearsand olderBring to Class: 1) Photo copy of driving per-mit. 2) The parent must attend the first class with the student. 3) Payment must be made prior to class. Community EducationSummer Day Camps

Instructor: Amanda DommerHood River Summer Day Camps Through Community Education. Children must have completed kindergarten to be eligible to at-tend camp. Summer Day Camp is Commu-nity Education’s flag ship program intended for children ages 6-12 years of age. We’ve designed three separate two week sessions to pick from throughout the summer. Each session is filled with over 70 hours of excit-ing experiences. Creating an enriching and exciting environment is what we strive for. Our trained camp counselors include a head counselor, an aquatics supervisor/life guard, college aged young adults and high school students who guide the children through the camp experience. Our goals include creating a welcoming environment, inclusivity, being safe, responsible and respectful towards oth-ers. In each session, there is something for everyone. Activities range from outdoor explor-ing, art projects, group games and free time to develop lasting friendships throughout camp. Tuition fees cover admission to various loca-tions, the range of exciting activities, supplies, and the travel of the special trips. Providing a great experience for children is very impor-tant. Our main camp runs from 9 am until 3:30 PM. We realize that some families need longer options and our extended care cover-age runs from 7:30am-5:00 pm for working parents. During the extended hours our coun-selors will engage and work with the campers on a variety of projects and do physical activi-ties. While we recommend the full two weeks and we know the kids have lasting friendships from these camps, there are limited 1 week slots available for families who have a busy summer schedule. Inquire about one week rates by calling the office or by going online at hrcommunityed.org

Water WOW! (6-11 years)Instructor: Amanda Dommer This session of Summer Day Camp is filled to the brim with water, water and more water. Can you say waterpark - wow and pools - wow and in addition children will enjoy hiking to wonderful water falls - wow, swimming at lakes - wow and being on the water - wow. We strategically placed this camp in the middle of the hottest part of the Hood River summer! The opportunity includes exploring beautiful lakes and learning about the animals and ecosystems that water supports in a water wow theme. Weather and temperatures vary by location and help your child be prepared by sending them with appropriate attire and good hiking shoes. Please slather them in sun-screen (preferably water safe 30+ SPF) prior to leaving the house and we will ensure that they keep a protective layer on them consis-tently throughout the camp. We also recom-mend a sun hat and long sleeve sun shirt for additional protection. Do you wish you could get your kids out when the weather is per-fect well don’t let them down – send them to camp! Our experience and qualified staff are here to make a child’s summer fun. While we are around water we always allow the children to choose their level of participation based on their comfort with water and have a coun-selor/lifeguard watching the children during water activities.
