While there is no cure for “age-related macular degeneration” (AMD), the leading cause of severe vision loss in Americans age 50 and over,
early diagnosis is essential to delaying the disease’s progression. With this in mind, there are four tests that people should undergo by age 50 (or before age 50 if they have AMD risk factors) to provide a diagnosis. They are: the visual test involving the Amsler grid (which checks for distortion in central vision); a dilated eye exam, which allows examination of the optic nerve and retina; optical coherence tomography (OCT), which provides a cross-section image of the macula; and fl uorescein angiography, which detects blood ves-sel growth, leakage, and retinal deposits. P.S. Risk factors for AMD include being postmenopausal without the benefi t of estrogen replacement therapy, having heart disease or high blood pressu-re, using photosensitizing drugs, and smoking.

Elderly women who exercise regularly are less prone to suf-fer mental decline. That is the nding of a study in which
researchers tracked nearly 6,000 healthy women age 65 and older whose mental fac-
ulties and levels of exercise were evaluated over a 6- to 8-year span. Those in the high-est quartile of exercise were 26% less likely to develop cognitive decline than those in the quartile who exercised the least. For example, for every mile per day the women walked, they lowered their risk of mental decline by 13%. Walking speed was not a factor. This bene t is likely due to increased cerebral ow, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease in the body and brain, and stimulated nerve growth.
