Naval Club Report – May 2016 The Naval Club gathered at the RSA on Sunday 15

th May for an enjoyable afternoon of darts and 8 ball pool in

conjunction with members of the Air Force Association. There was signs of misspent youth in the stoker and weapon mechanic members and a Jack Dusty rescued a foundering WE officer from annihilation on the pool table late in the day. The Australian sledging skills of the weapon mechanic surfaced again too – no surprises there. The TASI was pretty good on the dartboard going into the final versus the Air Force but the old bunting tosser with 50 years service in the mob, that’s right 50 years (why wud ya!) was average at best. The gunner rates ran the draw and kept the score, the Air Force and their ladies were there in force too and it was a great afternoon. The next meeting will be held at the RSA on Sunday 19

th June. Subject to weather either an indoor/outdoor bowls event

and it is hoped the Air Force Association will accept the graciously extended invitation for a return match. Don’t forget to bring your wives this time, you mateloes! The July meeting will probably be the annual mid-year formal-ish lunch. President Vince is investigating details for an away trip later this year in Sept/Oct to Warkworth/Sandspit/Kawau. This trip depends on tide times and passenger maritime vessels availability - more details to follow. A reminder that the AGM of the Naval Club will be held at the RSA on the 21

st August 2016.

If you aren’t getting the Naval Club newsletter please contact Secretary Dave Wadman or President Vince Sturmey.

Indoor Bowls Report The Silverdale Indoor Bowls Club is having a slow but steady growth for this time of the year with everyone very keen and enjoying the social side of the club as well. To all those Indoor players who are coming to the Mid Winter Luncheon, on Thursday 16

th of June. Please, please buy your

tickets as soon as possible as the cut off day will be Thursday 9th of June, when I have to put through the orders to the RSA

Restaurant Chef. The entertainment for the Mid Winter luncheon will be Gary Brown who has performed before for us with most people applauding his different acts and impersonations. As well we wish all those members who are having health problems at the moment all the best for a speedy recovery.

Well, as I always say enjoy your life and enjoy your bowls.

Women's Section Report

Greetings to you all.

Our May meeting was of course our Birthday. What a great day it was too. It was lovely to see so many other clubs attend. As usual our lunch was lovely. A great big thank you to our Kitchen staff, especially as our new chef was thrown in the deep end. Our entertainment was something else. Colin Parris entertained us with comedy, song and great take offs of other entertainers. Our entertainment for June is Doris Coppell’s life in the Navy, There will be a short video and then she will answer any questions that you might like to ask. Our afternoon tea will be Devonshire tea DON’T FORGET IT IS NOW TIME TO RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP. I hope this report finds you all in good health. Hope to see you all at our next meeting.

Kay Chilman.

Report from the Museum The Museum is continuing to trot along nicely. We have a number of our friends of the Museum who arrive every Wednesday; Neil, Ken, Bob, Greg, Colin and myself. We are always willing to help visitors and show them around. Also we investigate queries about an enormous number of events. There is always someone who can help out in one area or another.

Hearing voices in your head is normal. Listening to them is quite common. Arguing with them – acceptable. It is only when you lose that argument that you get in real trouble.

8 Ball Report Hi everyone, We have had some good numbers for our Saturday club days again in May and it is good to see you all there. The Club had a visit to Warkworth RSA for a fun game of 8 Ball. Once again Warkworth won the day. On 30th April we had our June Lyall Memorial competition and it was won by Keith Bate and Rex Hopkins. We had our Men’s singles competition on Sunday 22nd May and it was won by Peter Grimes. I hope to see some more of our members turn up on a Saturday as it helps to make the day much more interesting and fun. See you all soon

Kay Chilman.

KEV Report

It was good to have the RSA Support Officer, Chandra Newman, join us for our May meeting.

We were advised that she is making contact with some of our senior members to establish if they have needs which she could assist with. Chandra is available for consultation and assistance Monday to Friday till 12.30pm.

Our guest speaker for the day was Councillor John Watson, who in general spoke of the “ups and downs” in his role as one of our representatives on the Auckland City Council. John arrived in New Zealand from Scotland with his parents as a “wee nip-per” in 1961. By profession he is a schoolteacher and something of a writer but was drawn into local politics as a Rodney Councillor in 2004 over his concerns about the sewerage system developments on the Coast and the Hammerhead debacle. We were advised of the constant tug-of-war over funding for projects between the representatives of the various wards that make up the ACC. Members tasked John on issues such as roading, public transport and Orewa Beach protection projects. It is evident to us that the so-called full and open discussion policy of the ACC is somewhat meaningless when local opinion over the lifting of the set netting ban is ignored. The bureaucrats as represented by the Council Controlled Organisations, seem to dictate to Council rather than the other way around.

John expressed the view that a stronger leader of the Council is needed. Let’s hope this year’s elections produce such a person.

Don’t forget our mid-winter lunch is on Sunday, 26th June. Tony is sending out invites.

Finally, our condolences go out to Ron Hulse on the recent loss of his wife Daphne.

Next meeting 13th June at 2.30pm.

Frank Townley

Outdoor Bowls - Roll up Report

Well we missed the flowers that grow in May, however we managed to have some good roll ups. June is the end of our financial year so a meeting has been called for 11th June at 11.30 am to discuss any business that’s needed. This will be followed by our normal roll up through to 1 pm, then a friendly BBQ. Intending members and partners most welcome.
