Explore various pedagogical approaches to enhance the teaching and learning of students with English as an additional language. An experienced VCE Accounting teacher who has taught EAL students both locally and overseas, Brendan will demonstrate activities that work (and don’t work) with EAL learners and suggest approaches for use with your students.

Using various strategies including the use of critical thinking, Szuen will explore ways to support students to competently respond to theory and discussion style questions. The session will focus on how to prompt student responses with the use of case studies and graphs in order to consider and evaluate key information in a thoughtful manner throughout Units 1 to 4.

You’ve “flipped” your lessons. The students have come into class the next day. How do you now measure whether students have understood? Learn how to simply, and easily, make unique assessments for each student in your class using nothing more than Microsoft Word and Excel. Better yet, learn how to make your marking easier by making unique solutions at the click of a button! This double length session in a computer lab concludes at 1.00pm.

Help students understand the required performance indicators for VCE Accounting. A Teaching Fellow in the Department of Accounting at The University of Melbourne, Greg previously taught in secondary education for 19 years. He continually develops teaching strategies that will assist students gain greater insight into their knowledge and skills in fundamental accounting. Join Greg as he discusses the teaching of financial and non-financial indicators and why these are used by businesses.

Approaches to using Excel with students of Accounting Amanda Brady, St Joseph’s College, Echuca
As part of the new Accounting Study Design students may be asked to do a ‘What If’ scenario. Join Amanda for a hands-on session in a computer lab and see how you can use Excel as a tool for teaching Accounting. Using budgeting as an example, Amanda will demonstrate how to create and use graphs, and provide a ‘what if analysis’ for class activities and assessment tasks. This workshop is applicable to Units 1 to 4. This session is repeated on Tuesday – session TB05.

With a focus on ethical considerations in the new (draft) VCE Accounting Study Design, participants depart Victoria University at 1.45pm for an engaging panel presentation and discussion at CPA Australia Southbank. Meet with industry experts and discuss considerations for ethical, social and environmental accounting and explore case studies and examples teachers can use with their own classes to incorporate triple-bottom line accounting within their VCE classes. This session includes a reception hosted by CPA Australia at 3.30pm and concludes at 4.00pm. Finish your day with colleagues over a complimentary beverage! A short walk is involved to cross the Yarra River into Southbank. Arrangements will be made for those with mobility needs – please indicate your needs prior to completing your online registration.

A key component of the study, and one that students and teachers alike find challenging, knowledge and skills in analysis and interpretation of Accounting data must be acquired for student to succeed. Experienced teacher Vicki will take participants through her approach to the teaching and learning of analysis and interpretation which she applies across all of Units 1 to 4.

Gamifying Accounting: online and offlineMichael Allison, Eltham College
This is a double length session, concluding at 11.45am. You don’t need to be an IT expert to create excellent ‘games’ for use in Accounting. The burgeoning concept of “gamification” can be applied to your lessons with nothing more than plain paper, scissors, and a good idea. Michael will explore “gamification” in an educational context. Examples of ways to “gamify” VCE Accounting will be presented including both online and offline (hard copy) examples.

The VCE Accounting Study Design has undergone a thorough review of Units 1 to 4 with public consultation occurring earlier this year. With all four Units due to commence in 2019, this presentation will provide an outline of the key components of the draft study and in particular, highlight what’s new. Implications for teaching Units 1 and 2 in 2018 will also be considered and time will be provided for an extensive Q and A. This session is for all VCE Accounting teachers.

TD03 Good for footy! Managing Etihad Stadium: financial systems, targets and exploring the facilities Kim Cummins, Senior Business Analyst, Etihad Stadium
Visit Etihad Stadium to meet with their finance team and discuss various concepts of financial and operations management. Participants will be exposed to the experiences that students would encounter if taken on a school for VCE Accounting and Business Management. Depart Victoria University at 2.00pm by tram (Myki card required). Arrangements will be made for those with mobility needs – please indicate mobility needs prior to completing the online registration process.

TD04 Collaborative learning using Google Drive and other Google infused tools Kirsten Furness, Rosebud Secondary College
Participants are encouraged to Bring Your Own Device to this session. This hands on session will focus on Collaborative Learning using Google Drive and other google infused tools to illustrative the best practice use of ICT to engage students. Kirsten will show how a point of need for each student can be established and formative data gathered to inform teaching. She will also introduce Google’s Graduate Release Responsibility framework (releasing responsibility from teacher to student) based on research and best practice, and discuss what collaborative learning looks like, and tools to differentiate learning for students.
