1 ABOUT THE AFMC The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) represents Canada’s 17 faculties of medicine and is the national voice for academic medicine. Our organization was founded in 1943 and functions to support individually and collectively Canada's medical schools through the promotion of medical education, research, and clinical care. INTRODUCTION This publication provides information on admission requirements that covers several academic years. When comparing data from year to year, it should be understood that there is some yearly variability in the context affecting the data. Examples of such context variability include changes to the number of available places, admission requirements, and selection policies for some of the faculties of medicine. All statistical data come from an annual survey conducted by the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC). Individual faculty information is provided by each faculty of medicine as of July, 2017 and, therefore, is subject to change. General Information There are seventeen faculties of medicine in Canada offering programs of study leading to the award of the MD degree, which is the first professional degree in medicine. The faculties of medicine are listed in a geographic sequence from east to west, with no rank ordering whatsoever. The number of places available is determined by provincial governments based on educational and financial resources, as well as Canada’s future physician workforce requirements. Since the universities are under provincial jurisdiction, the majority of places in a faculty of medicine are allocated to permanent residents of the province in which the university is located. An applicant must decide to which faculty or faculties of medicine application will be made. Obviously, the geographic location of a faculty of medicine is of critical importance to a prospective applicant. For those applicants who are free to move to any location where a place may be offered, chances of success in gaining admission may be considerably enhanced. Those who apply to only one faculty of medicine have the smallest chance of being offered admission. As the number of applications increases, so does the chance of being offered a place at a faculty of medicine. The competition to enter a faculty of medicine is very keen so it is important that applicants ensure that they fully meet the entry requirements of each faculty of medicine to which they apply. The applicant’s type of pre-medical undergraduate degree and institution of study should not deter filing an application, provided that all academic prerequisites are met. Not only should applicants plan to meet all academic prerequisites, it is also important to respect all deadline dates. In general, an application or documentation is ignored when received after deadline dates. Those who wish to maximize their chances of gaining admission to a Canadian faculty of medicine should consider the following: • Since residence is considered in admissions, include the faculty of medicine located in your home

province amongst those to which applications are submitted. • If you are resident in a province with more than one faculty of medicine (Québec, Ontario or Alberta),

try to apply to more than one faculty of medicine in the province. Remember that some faculties of medicine have far more places to allocate than others.

Some applicants are definite about a particular faculty of medicine and make only one application. In a situation of keen competition, the determination to enter a particular faculty of medicine may be tantamount to excluding oneself from the study of medicine altogether.

2 Ontario Medical School Application Service (OMSAS) The application process for Ontario’s 6 medical schools is centralized through the OMSAS (Ontario Medical School Application Service), and admission must be made through the OMSAS website. Each medical school is completely independent in reaching its own admission decisions. All applicants are required to pay a service fee plus an institutional fee for each medical school applied to. These fees are non-refundable, and your application will not be forwarded to your universities of choice until you submit full payment to the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC). Fees OMSAS Application Service Fee: $220 All applicants are required to pay a base fee of $220. University Fee (In Canadian Funds) Each medical school charges a university fee. OMSAS collects the university fees and remits them to the universities to cover a portion of the costs associated with the admissions assessment. This fee is payable to the OUAC.

Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a computer-based standardized examination for prospective medical students in the United States, Australia and Canada. It is designed to assess problem solving, critical thinking, and knowledge of natural, behavioural, and social science concepts and principles prerequisite to the study of medicine. The test is not required by all faculties of medicine and the extent to which test results are used in admission decisions varies by faculty of medicine (please see individual school websites for details). The latest version of the MCAT took effect in April 2015. The exam was updated to reflect changes in medicine and science and to test examinees on not only what they know but how well they use what they know. Please visit Prepare for the MCAT Exam on the AAMC website for more information. The MCAT exam has four test sections:

• Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems • Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems • Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behaviour • Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills

Each of the four sections will receive a scaled score from a low of 118 to a high of 132, with a midpoint of 125 (similar the old scale the new scale also has 15 integers but numbered from 118 to 132). These 4 new MCAT scaled scores will be combined to create a total score that will range from 472 to 528, with a midpoint of 500. This total score is used by medical school admission committees to evaluate the MCAT component of the admissions process. There are MCAT testing centers, both on and off campus, from coast to coast in the US and Canada. For a list of current locations, click here: MCAT testing centres in the US and Canada. Additionally, there are numerous MCAT international testing locations which use a different testing schedule depending on location. 4 Repeat Applicants An applicant who does not receive an offer of admission must decide whether to re-apply for admission in a subsequent year. Unsuccessful applicants should try to reach an objective assessment of why they did not receive an offer and see if there are areas of their application upon which they can improve. Unsuccessful applicants should realize that the reason for rejection may not be the lack of ability or qualities but the competition for the limited number of places that are available when the number of qualified applicants greatly exceeds the number of available places. Well qualified applicants should consider re-applying for admission to a faculty of medicine and in recent years, repeat applicants have fared relatively well. Applying to Study Medicine outside Canada If an applicant decides to seek admission to a medical faculty outside Canada, they must bear in mind that returning to do postgraduate training or practise medicine in Canada may prove difficult. Limitations on recognition of international medical degrees apply to qualifications earned abroad by citizens as well as by non-citizens of Canada. Strong motivation, determination and adequate academic preparation are in themselves no guarantee that a Canadian citizen who attends an international medical faculty will be able to train or practise medicine in Canada in the future. International Students Not all faculties of medicine accept applications from international students. Conversely, some faculties of medicine have contracts with international governments or institutions to accept applications for “supernumerary” positions. The conditions of admission may require that the faculty of medicine will be compensated for the entire cost of medical education, the student will not apply for post-MD (residency) training in Canada and these graduates will return to their countries of origin to practise medicine. Information about contract positions is available from the educational institutions or governments that have negotiated such contracts. International students planning to study medicine in Canada are personally responsible for obtaining the necessary student authorization and student visa to enter Canada for the purpose of study. All matters related to entering Canada must be taken up at the Canadian embassy, High Commission or consulate nearest to the student.

The number of year one positions available for 2016/17 was 80 which included 3 positions available to Aboriginal students who are residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. The 80 positions included 60 residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, 10 residents of New Brunswick, 4 residents of Prince Edward Island, and 1 resident of the Yukon; the rest of the seats are for the rest of the provinces in Canada and Non/Canadian. The number of year one positions available for 2017/18 will be 80 as well.

Canadian citizens/permanent residents or visa students may apply.

Academic Criteria:

A Bachelor’s degree and six credit hours in English are required at the time of admission. In exceptional circumstances an application may be considered when a Bachelor’s degree will not be held at time of admission. Such an applicant will have completed at least 60 credit hours including the prerequisite subject of 6 credit hours in English at a recognized university or university college before admission, and have work related or other experience acceptable to the Admissions Committee.

The mean grade point average of successful applicants in 2016/17 was 3.85 on a 4.0 scale.

The MCAT is required and it is recommended that the test be written within the five year period prior to application.

Interviews: Traditional and Multiple Mini Interviews (TaMMI) offered. These take place in November 04, 2017 for the August 2018 entering class. For the 2017 entering class, there were 130 Newfoundland/Labrador residents interviewed and 114 other residents of Canada interviewed for a total of 244 applicants interviewed.

Application Details: An electronic application process is available in July 2017. The deadline for receipt of the application and fee of $75 to Memorial University of Newfoundland, as well as an application service fee of $156.75 (plus applicable taxes) to CaRMS at the time of application is September 14, 2017.

The number of year one positions available for 2017/18 is 109 (99 for Maritime residents (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island) and 9 for non-Maritime residents); 79 seats in the Maritime pool will be assigned to the Halifax campus and 30 seats to the St. John campus; all permanent residents of New Brunswick will attend the St. John campus and the government of New Brunswick is responsible for defining residency status. One additional position is available for a dental student who after completing the MD program plans to specialize in oral maxillofacial surgery. In 2016/17 there were 99 positions filled by residents of the Maritime Provinces.

Canadian citizens/permanent residents may apply.

Academic Criteria:

A Bachelor’s degree is required at time of admission.

The minimum acceptable grade point average is 3.3 for Maritime residents and 3.7 for non-Maritime residents on a scale of 4.0. The mean grade point average of successful applicants in 2016/17 was 3.8.

The MCAT is required and the test must have been taken within the last five years.

There are no prerequisite courses.

Starting with the 2017/2018 application cycle all applicants are required to complete a mandatory 90-minute computer-based test (CASPer), to assist with our selection process. Successful completion of CASPer is mandatory in order to maintain admission eligibility.

Interviews: Interviews will take place at both the Halifax and Saint John campuses during the month of November. Currently all Maritime residents who meet the minimum academic requirements (GPA, course load, MCAT, and CASPer) will be offered an interview.

Application Details: An online application (Section 1) is available annually June 15th to July 31st . The application is a two-step process. Section 1 must be submitted must be submitted in order to receive access to Section 2. Section 2 is due Sept 1st annually, this includes transcript assessment, residency verification, personal statement and supplemental form. Official transcripts must be RECEIVED by our office on or before July 31st annually (must indicate an issue/print date no later than July 31st). The number of year one positions available for 2018 will be roughly 218. Among these positions, 209 are for the regular pool of Québec applicants (60% expected for college students and 40% for university students, which includes up to 8 positions filled with applicants to the PhD program and up to 8 positions filled with university applicants from the labour market). There is a possibility of 3 more positions as per the intergovernmental agreement with New-Brunswick, 1 position available for an applicant of foreign nationality who holds a study permit, 1 potential position for an applicant from another Canadian province or territory, 4 potential positions for applicants who are First Nations people or Inuit people (the quota to be allocated between the 4 Québec faculties of medicine) and 4 positions in the Medical Military Training Program (MMTP) (to be allocated between the 3 Francophone faculties of medicine in Québec) and a possibility of 2 positions for applicants who wish to pursue their postgraduate studies in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Furthermore, as per the annual attrition rate, up to 3 positions could be offered to IMGs willing to start with clerkship.

Academic Criteria:

College diploma or degree (Diplôme d'études collégiales or DÉC) or pre-university diploma equivalent to the 13 years of the Québec school system (or pre-university diploma or degree which corresponds to 12 years of study and one year of advanced studies) and academic training deemed satisfactory in sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology) is required. The prerequisite courses at college level or equivalent are: 2 courses in biology (NYA and 401), 3 courses in chemistry (NYA, NYB and 202), 2 courses in mathematics (NYA and NYB) and 3 courses in phyiscs (NYA, NYB and NYC). The MCAT is not required.

• An applicant that holds a college diploma or the equivalent and whose academic record contains less than 12 credits taken into account to calculate the term average will be assessed on his/her college record;

• The applicant from the pool of Québec university students who solely attended Laval University must have achieved at least 45 university credits at Laval University that can be taken into account to calculate the Laval rating at the time of application. Training activities associated with a non numeric value, training acquired as a free auditor, through micro-programs and graduate programs don't fulfill this requirement.

• The applicant from the pool of Québec university students who did not attend Laval University must have achieved at least 75 university credits in a single training program at the time of application in order to be considered eligible.

• The applicant from the pool of Québec university students who attended both another university and Laval University must have achieved at the time of application a minimum of 75 university credits in a single training program or have achieved at least 45 university credits at Laval University that can be taken into account to calculate the Laval rating and must have achieved at Laval University the last university credits taken into account in the calcuation. The training activities associated with a non numeric value, training acquired as a free auditor, through micro-programs and graduate programs don't fulfill this requirement.

Selection process: The first step of the selection process, the one that will determine which applicants will be summoned for the Multiple Mini-Interviews (MMI), is the analysis of the academic record (rating R*). The Multiple Mini-Interviews represent the second step of the process. The final selection is based upon the results obtained in the two steps of the selection process, in the following proportion:

• Academic record: 50%• MMI: 50%

*The performance rating for the last applicant summoned for a MMI in 2017 was 33.321 for college students and 33.197 for university students.

Interviews: Multiple Mini-Interviews (MMI) will take place on a Saturday and a Sunday at the end of April 2018. The applicants must show up in person at the date and in the place to which they will have been summoned without opportunity for change. The fees for the interview are currently $125.

Application Details: Online and paper-based applications will be available starting on November 1st 2017 on the website ulaval.ca. The deadline for receipt of the applications is January 15, 2018 for university students and March 1st, 2018 for college students. Processing fees are $80.00.

These 199 positions will be roughly allocated as follows: 171 for residents of Québec, 24 for residents of Atlantic Canada, 1 for residents of Western Canada, 1 for foreign applicants holding a student visa (this year, it's a supplemental candidat from Western Canada). There is an agreement between the 4 schools of Québec for positions intended for First Nations or Inuit people who are Québec residents or for members of the Canadian Forces. The positions are determined by Canadian regulations and the 4 faculties agree on the way these positions are to be shared.

The 199 positions are allocated between three sites roughly as follow: 142 to the Sherbrooke site, 33 to the Saguenay site and 24 to the Moncton site. At the beginning of May, applicants who apply as Québec residents must complete a form to choose a site by stating their preference between Saguenay and Sherbrooke. The assignment of these persons to one of those two sites depends among other things upon the number of available positions at each site at the time the offer is made, upon the applicant’s preference mentioned on the site choice form and upon the rank of the applicants on the excellence list. The Saguenay site is reserved solely for Québec applicants. The Moncton site is reserved solely for New Brunswick applicants.

The number of domestic, year one positions available for 2017/18 is 259.

The 259 positions are allocated to two campuses: 205 at the St. George campus (in downtown Toronto) and 54 at the Mississauga campus (in Mississauga).

Students will be assigned to either the Mississauga campus or the St. George campus at the time of offer of admission. At the St. George campus, students will be assigned to one of three academy sites shortly after the admissions process is completed. The St. George campus includes the FitzGerald, Peters-Boyd and Wightman-Berris Academies.

Academic Criteria:

For students studying at an undergraduate program at a Canadian university, a minimum of three years full-time university study (equivalent of 15 full-course-equivalents) is required.

The minimum acceptable grade point average is 3.6 on a 4.0 scale. The mean grade point average of successful applicants in 2016/17 was 3.96.

The MCAT is required and the test must have been written within five years of the application deadline. Only the most recent score is considered. The minimum acceptable scores are 9/9/9 for the old MCAT, and 125 in each of the four sections for MCAT 2015.

Prerequisite courses include two full-course-equivalents in life sciences and one full-course-equivalent in social science or humanities or language.


Applicants from a graduate program may be assessed in a separate process. As part of the OMSAS application, they must submit an Academic Curriculum Vitae showing research productivity, as well as an additional reference letter from their supervisor evaluating their graduate performance and stating the expected date of degree completion. The format for the Academic CV may be found on the Admissions Website. Graduate applicants may be considered with a lower than minimum required grade point average. Graduate applicants will only be considered if they have already completed or are in the final stages of completing their graduate program. Completion of all program requirements, including successful defence of a thesis if required, must occur prior to June 30th in the year of proposed entry.

Indigenous Student Application Program: Recognizing the commitment to social responsibility in the faculty’s mission, this program has been implemented to increase the number of Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit and Métis) medical students. Saskatchewan Residents (including applicants eligible to apply through the Aboriginal Admissions Program):

There are two main academic requirements that must be met in order to apply as a Saskatchewan resident: MCAT and a 4-year Baccalaureate degree awarded prior to entering Medicine.

MCAT scores must be obtained in one sitting prior to the application deadline. The earliest accepted scores for 2018 entry are April 2015 and only the most recent score will be considered. Prerequisite courses are not required.

To meet the second mandatory requirement, a 4-year Baccalaureate degree must be completed prior to entering Medicine (requirements completed by the end of April) and in < 5 years since starting university. Students may apply in the final year of that degree or once it is completed. The minimum acceptable university academic average (UAA) is 75%. All university courses completed as of the end of December following application will be used in the UAA calculation for admission purposes. Although courses completed in the calendar year following application will not be used in calculating a UAA for admission purposes, these final courses must average ≥ 75%. If a 4-year degree has been awarded prior to application, the UAA will be calculated on the most recent 120 CU completed, provided they were completed within a period spanning < 5 years.

Out-of-Province Residents:

There are two main academic requirements that must be met in order to apply as an out-of-province resident: MCAT and a 4-year Baccalaureate degree.

MCAT scores must be obtained in one sitting prior to the application deadline. The earliest accepted scores for 2018 entry are April 2015 and only the most recent score will be considered. Prerequisite courses are not required.

Application by out-of-province applicants can be made only during or after the final year of a four year degree. If a four year degree is completed prior to application, course-work for the degree must have been started within the 5 years prior to completion of the degree. If applicants are in the final year of a four year degree, a minimum of 90 credit units must have been completed in the 48 months prior to the end of August immediately before application. The minimum UAA required for application will be 83.0%. The four year degree must be completed prior to entering medicine (requirements completed by the end of April). All remaining courses completed for the degree after the date of application must minimally average 83.0%. Students of Aboriginal ancestry may make application through the Aboriginal Admissions Program whereby all requirements are the same as the regular Saskatchewan resident pool. Selection Factors:

The number of year one positions available for 2017/18 is 288 which includes up to 14 positions available to Aboriginal applicants and up to 5 positions available to applicants to the MD/PhD program. A maximum of 29 positions will be available to out-of-province residents.

The 288 positions are allocated to four campuses: 192 at the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program; 32 at the Island Medical Program (in Victoria); 32 at the Northern Medical Program (in Prince George); 32 at the Southern Medical Program (in Kelowna). All positions are filled based on the same selection criteria, however, a Rural/Remote Suitability tool is also used to assign students to the Northern Medical Program, up to 10 positions at the Southern Medical Program, and up to 2 positions at the Island Medical Program.


Academic Criteria:

Three years full-time university/college is required.

The minimum acceptable average for in province applicants is 75% on a 100% scale. The minimum average for out-of-province applicants is 85% (visit the website for up-to-date information on minimum academic standing).

The MCAT is required (please visit the website for information on MCAT eligibility).

Six credits of English are the only required prerequisites. Taking courses in biology, biochemistry, chemistry and organic chemistry are strongly encouraged.

Interviews: These take place in early-mid February, 2018. For the September, 2017 entering class there were 579 British Columbia residents interviewed and 81 other residents of Canada interviewed for a total of 660 applicants interviewed.

Application Details: An electronic application process is available in early June, 2017. The deadline for receipt of the application is September 15, 2017 (interviewed applicants who are required to submit supplementary information must do so by mid-February 2017). The application fees are $119.75 for residents of British Columbia with BC transcripts only; $153.75 for residents of British Columbia with any out-of-province transcripts; and $177.00 for residents outside British Columbia.
