A d m i r a l t y ,Whitehall,

25th M ay, 1943.The K IN G has been graciously pleased to approve th e aw ard of the VICTORIA

CROSS for valour in com mand of H.M. Submarines to :—Commander John Wallace Linton, D.S.O., D.S.C., R.N .

From the outbreak of W ar until H.M.S. “ T urbulen t’s ” last patro l Commander L inton was constantly in command of submarines, and during th a t tim e inflicted great damage on th e Enem y. H e sank one cruiser, one destroyer, one U-boat, tw enty-eight supply ships, some 100,000 tons in all, and destroyed th ree trains by gun-fire. In his last year he spent two hundred and fifty-four days a t sea, submerged for nearly half the tim e, and his ship was hunted th irteen tim es and had two hundred and fifty depth charges aimed a t her.

His m any and brilliant successes were due to his constant activ ity and skill, and the daring which never failed him when there was an enemy to be attacked.

On one occasion, for instance, in H.M.S. “ T urbulent,” he sighted a convoy of two m erchantm en and two destroyers in m ist and moonlight. He worked round ahead of the convoy and dived to a ttack it as i t passed through the moon’s rays. On bringing his sights to bear he found himself right ahead of a destroyer. Y et he held his course till the destroyer was alm ost on top of him , and, when his sights came on the convoy, he filed. His great courage and determ ination were rewarded. He sank one m erchantm an and one destroyer outright, and set the other m erchantm an on fire so th a t she blew up.
