Sergeant Hunter, who was in command of an L.C.A., negotiated three rows of obstacles successfully and disembarked his troops. On being lightened the craft swung round and detonated a mine which blew the bottom out. He ordered the crew ashore and they took shelter under the stem of a Sherman tank.

He then saw a Sergent Major o f the Canadian Forces trying to attract the attention o f the Sherman tank. Realising that the Sergeant Major was not visible to the crew of the Sherman, he crawled across the intervening thirty yards under heavy fire to the Sergeant Major and returned to the tank with the message that its fire was being directed towards the Canadians, and orders to cease fire and advance ahead o f the Canadians. When this proved to be impossible Sergeant Hunter again crossed the fire-swept thirty yards with the message and returned to rejoin his troops.
