ADMINISTRING ASSESSMENT - Many factors are involved : tasks are presented, preparation of the students, actual

assessment condition, feeling of excessive pressure, concern, involvement & focuses

General Guidelines Before the testing date

1. Understand nature and purpose of the testing a. Tests to be given. b. Reasons for giving tests.

2. Decide the number to be tested at one time. 3. Decide the seating arrangements. 4. Decide the exact time of testing.

a. Avoid a day before holiday. b. Avoid conflict with recess of other group. c. Make sure there is ample time.

5. Procedure and check test materials: a. Directions for administering. b. Directions for scoring. c. Test booklets : One for each students and examiner d. Answer sheets : One for each students and examiner e. Pencils (regular or special) f. Stopwatch or other regular timer. g. Scoring keys. h. “Testing – Do Not Disturb” sign. i. Other supplies (Scratch paper etc)

6. Study test and directions carefully. a. Familiarize yourself with :

General test makeup, time limits, directions, method of indicating answers. b. Take the test your self.

7. Arrange materials for distribution. Count number needed. 8. Decide the order in which materials are to be distributed and collected. 9. Decide what students who finish early are to do.

7. Move quickly about the room to : a. Make sure students are marking answer on the correct place. b. Make sure ss are continuing to the next page after finishing the previous pg. c. Make sure students stop at the end of the test. d. Encourage students to keep on working until the time is called. e. Make sure there is no copying. f. Attend to the students who finish early.

8. Permit no outside interruptions. 9. Stop at the proper time.

Just After Testing

1. Collect materials according to predetermined order. 2. Count booklets and answer sheet. 3. Make a record of any incidents observed that tend to invalidate scores made by ss. - The directions for taking test or completing an assessment should be complete, clear

& concise as possible. - The students must be aware of what is expected. - The method of responding should be as simple as possible.

Criteria for Preparing Directions 1. Assume that all involved are totally “ignorant” about what is to take place. 2. In writing the directions, use a clear , succinct style. Be as explicit as possible. 3. Emphasize the more important directions and key activities through underlining, italics,

or different type size or style. 4. Give the examiner full instructions on what to be done before, during, and after the

administration. 5. Pre test the directions with a sample of both examinees and examiners to identify

possible misunderstanding and inconsistencies & gather suggestions for improvement. 6. Keep the directions for different forms, subsections, or booklets as uniform as possible. 7. Where necessaries or helpful, give practice items.

- Any important assessment (ie final exam) should be announced : result in effective studies.

- If possible, practice should be given in taking tests. - The testing rooms should be as conducive as possible. - Sufficient time for the test tends to reduce wild guessing. - Arrange items in order of increasingly difficulty ( for good psychological sense) - Group items requiring similar types responses.

Cheating On Tests Cizek (1999) classifies cheating in three major categories :

Category Examples

Taking, giving, or receiving information from others

Copying from another’s test paper/ answer sheet. Using sign language.

Using forbidden materials Crib sheets (ties, shirt). Blank sheet, electronic calculator etc

Circumventing/ Taking advantage of the testing process

Changing answers after the grading, substitute test takers. Not turning tests – claiming teacher lost it. Obtaining extra copy of test.

How to detect ? - Observation and proctoring : can yield hard evidence - Statistical procedures. Patterns of students’ answer.
