From the Pastor...
Dear Friends,
What a great time we had last Saturday at the first ever Paw Creek Community Breakfast! The food was delicious and the CFC was humming with conversation and good cheer. It was exactly what the Outreach Committee had envisioned – and our thanks go to the committee and everyone involved for their dedication and hard work. That includes the chefs, first of all, along with the servers, those who set up and cleaned up, and everyone who passed the word and invited friends, neighbors and family to join us.
The Community Breakfast (may there be many more in the months and years to come!) is a perfect example of what the Bible calls the practice of hospitality. The Old Testament speaks of the sacred duty to welcome strangers with food and shelter. The New Testament speaks of the many meals that Jesus shared with people regardless of their class, position or reputation. And in the middle ages, the monasteries and convents of Europe were places of refuge. Hospitality has no ulterior motive - we don’t open the doors to make money or gain converts. But, as the book of Hebrews notes, when we open the doors wide, we often find that we have “entertained angels unawares”. We simply follow the commandment to receive all who come, and God decides what to make of our efforts.
Of all the things we can do to practice the Gospel, the most powerful is simply to open the doors. What a great start we have made. Let’s keep up the good work!
Blessings, Elliott

Welcome Patrick McCarthy! It’s somewhat odd to welcome someone we have come to know and admire - but now it’s official and Paw Creek is delighted. Patrick McCarthy has served as our Interim Director of Music since January. On May 16 the Session voted to remove the “interim” so now it’s official: Patrick joins Mark Burleson and the Chancel Choir as the leaders of our music ministry on Sunday morning. Patrick is a native of Maine and has been a music leader for both children and adults in Maine, North Carolina, and on the road with a traveling ensemble called “Ball in the House”. After a stint as a stay-at-home-dad with Natalie (now three years old), he is back at work as a music teacher at Odell School in Concord and now Director of Music at Paw Creek. He also founded and leads the Lake Norman Singers, a student community chorus. We are also delighted to welcome Patrick’s wife Courtney and their children Finegan, Eliza and Natalie. In the coming weeks, please be sure to let them know how happy we are to have them at Paw Creek.
Mark the Calendar Pentecost Sunday this year will be on June 9. Plans are well under way for our annual worship celebration and covered dish lunch with the members of Woodland Presbyterian Church. This year also marks the tenth anniversary of the dedication of the monument to mark the graves of enslaved members of Paw Creek buried in our cemetery. Save the date and look for more information soon.
Graduation Sunday Attention to all members who are graduating high school or college from December 2018 – June 2019. Paw Creek. Presbyterian Church will be honoring you during the service on June 2, 2019. Please wear your robes if available during service.

Applications Being Taken for Scholarships
Each Year the Presbyterian Women of Paw Creek Church offer our young adults (18-23) who are enrolled in or plan to attend a college, university, or technical institution a modest scholarship to help with the cost of their education. Applicants may apply twice for this yearly scholarship. (Scholarships are awarded based on the number of applicants and the funds available each year.)
Application forms for the scholarship are found in the Narthex and the Church office. Beside the application form, you must also provide proof of admission to the college, university or technical institution that you will or are attending when you submit the application.
