CHOREOGRAPHER’S NOTE

Choreographing Within was a very different experience from my last few works. It has been about delving into the self and exploring our deepest emotions, however disturbing they may be. Needless to say, the process of creating it has sometimes been almost too close for comfort. That is the journey I invite you to take with us.

When I began conceptualising the piece, I revisited mythological stories in the context of the social turmoil of our times – mythological stories such as Brahma’s desire for his own daughter and the Shiva Shakti relationship. The gruesome Nirbhaya case triggered an inner turmoil and anger that needed to be addressed. The constant onslaught of violence, and the religious, social and political struggles that surround us, needed to be questioned. Eventually, these have become the subterranean stream that feeds the work, leaving Within both ‘knotted’ up in our emotions and ‘unwrapped’ of them. Using the metaphor of the mirror in the second half, one felt compelled to see the truth of the Jiddu Krishnamurti quote:

To understand yourself you must create a mirror that reflects accurately what you are … only in the understanding of what is, is there freedom from what is.’

In doing so, I found myself inspired by the emptiness and eternal space of the ‘sidhha’ sculpture.

ADITI MANGALDAS DANCE COMPANY – THE DRISHTIKON DANCE FOUNDATION

Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company – The Drishtikon Dance Foundation was established with a vision to look at tradition with a modern mind; to explore the past and create a new, imaginative future. The dance company aims to achieve excellence and virtuosity in the rich classical Indian dance form of Kathak, as well as encourage the spirit of innovation. In doing so, they seek to challenge established norms and develop the courage to dance their own dance, while at the same time, being informed about the heritage, culture, influence and language of other dance styles and forms, viewpoints and ideas.

Aditi Mangaldas Concept and choreography, dancer

Aditi Mangaldas is a leading dancer and choreographer in the classical Indian dance form of Kathak. With extensive training under gurus of Kathak, Shrimati

Kumudini Lakhia and Pandit Birju Maharaj, Mangaldas is today recognised for her artistry, technique, eloquence and characteristic energy that mark every performance. Besides dancing and choreographing classical productions, both solo and group, she has broken new ground by using her knowledge of and experience in Kathak as a springboard to evolve a contemporary dance vocabulary, infused with the spirit of the classical. She has performed in major dance festivals across the world and heads the Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company – The Drishtikon Dance Foundation.

Morag Deyes Mentoring

Morag Deyes MBE has been the artistic director of Dance Base since 1994. After training in Edinburgh in ballet, tap, flamenco jazz and contemporary, she went on to dance professionally, and

has taught and choreographed work around the world. Deyes directed the hugely successful Dance Base shows, Off Kilter and the Holyrood Palace garden party celebrations, and programmed the Urban Dance stages for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations from 2004–6. She received an MBE for services to dance in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list in 2007 and the prestigious Spirit of the (Edinburgh) Fringe Award in 2009.

Manish Kansara Stage design

Born in Kutch Gujarat in 1963, Manish Kansara completed post-graduate studies in fine arts (sculpture) at College of Art, New Delhi, in 1988. He was awarded the

prestigious National Talent Search Scholarship in sculpture by the Indian government for the years 1976 to 1999 and received a research fellowship from the Charles Wallace India Trust, UK, to study at the Cardiff School of Art and Design, Wales, in 2004–5. Kansara has exhibited in group and solo shows at major art galleries in India, as well as Galerie Connie Bos in Amsterdam. He has been head of the faculty of art at Father Agnel School, New Delhi, since 1989.

Fabiana Piccioli Lighting design

Fabiana Piccioli trained as a dancer and studied philosophy in Rome. Between 2000 and 2002, she worked as a dancer in Belgium, before moving back to Rome

to become the production manager at the Romaeuropa Festival. In 2005, she moved to London to join the Akram Khan Company as the technical director and lighting designer, subsequently touring with the company worldwide. Since 2010, she has collaborated with other international artists and choreographers as a lighting designer. She was the winner of the 2013 Knight of Illumination Award (best lighting for dance).

Vani Subramanian Dramaturgy

One-time advertising writer, Vani Subramanian, has been a women’s rights activist and documentary film-maker since the 90s. Her work as a film-maker explores

the connections between everyday practices and larger political questions, be they in the areas of culture, food production, primary education, urban development, communalism, sex-selective abortions or even matters of identity embedded in our food practices. Her films have been screened and received awards, both nationally and internationally. More recently, Subramanian has extended her practice to video art in performance, as well as a mixed-media installation.

Farooq Chaudhry Special mentoring and dramaturgy

Farooq Chaudhry enjoyed an international professional dance career in the 80s and 90s. After retiring from dancing in 1999, he completed a master’s degree in arts

management at City University. A year later, he teamed up with Akram Khan and co-founded Akram Khan Company. As the company’s producer, Chaudhry forms innovative business models to support Khan’s artistic ambitions. In addition to his work for Akram Khan Company, he became the producer for the English National Ballet in 2013. Chaudhry is the chair of Dance UK’s board, a member of the strategic advisory committee for Clore Leadership Programme and a witness of the School for Social Entrepreneurs.

Christopher Flux Lighting adaption and execution

Christopher Flux graduated from Queen Margaret’s University, Edinburgh, with a bachelor’s degree in stage management and technical theatre. He worked on many Edinburgh Festival Fringe productions over

six years, before moving on to regional and international touring. Flux has toured shows across England and has travelled with the British Council to India and Canada for performances of Medea as part of Theatre Babel. In 2005, he moved to The Haymarket in Basingstoke where he designed productions in its final season as an independent venue. Afterwards, he joined Curve in Leicester as technical manager and worked on all of its major in-house productions.

Savio Julius Dsouza Sound execution

Savio Julius Dsouza’s love for music made him gravitate towards sound engineering and he has worked in the field for the past six years. He currently works for Sound &

Light Professionals through whom he has encountered many different genres of music and had the pleasure of working with some of the best sound engineers in India and abroad. He has also worked on television shows, sporting events and live concerts, and is also an artist.

Ish Shehrawat Music composer (Knotted)

Ish Shehrawat is a composer, sound artist and producer from Delhi. His primary fields of interest are sound art and installation, and electro-acoustic music. Producing

works under pseudonyms, such as edGeCut, diFfused beats, Khayali Pulao and 4th World Orchestra, he creates and collaborates on a wide spectrum of music and sounds, ranging from jazz to classical and ambient to electronic. Shehrawat has produced various sound-art installation projects and has composed music for independent short films, plays, performances and contemporary dance recitals. In 2009, he founded the music label, Sound Reasons, to promote avant-garde and electronic music, and released the compilation, t0, that same year.

Mahesh Vinayakram Music composer (Unwrapped)

UNESCO Millennium awardee and the son of ghatam maestro, TH Vikku Vinayakram, Mahesh Vinayakram has chosen the art of vocal music from the rhythm family.

He has toured extensively to the USA, UK, Europe, Africa and Asia, for world-music collaborations with artists, such as Ustad Zakir Hussain, Steve Smith, Pete Lockett, George Brooks, Nithin Sawhney and many others. Vinayakram has many international albums to his name, including Bravado Masala by James Asher and himself, Journeys through Masters of Percussion by Pete Lockett and himself, and MTV Coke Studio by world-music composer Nithin Sawhney, featuring himself for the song, ‘Vachan’.

Kimie Nakano Costume design (Knotted)

Kimie Nakano studied literature at Musashino University in Tokyo and costume design at Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Techniques du

Théâtre in Paris, and also completed a master’s degree in theatre design at Wimbledon College of Art in London. Nakano’s set and costume design credits for dance include

Carmen (Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre) and The Little Prince (Les Grands Ballets Canadians de Montreal). For Akram Khan Company, she designed the set and costumes for Vertical Road, and the costumes for iTMOi (in the mind of igor), Gnosis and The Rashomon Effect. She also designed costumes for the English National Ballet’s Dust.

Gauri Diwakar Dancer

A Kathak dancer par excellence and the 2002 Sringar Mani Award winner, Gauri Diwakar’s command over the art has won scores of admirers across the globe. Her

journey started from Jamshedpur where she honed her skills under Sumita Chowdhary and Sangeet Prabhakar from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad. She further refined her technique under the tutelage of Pandit Birju Maharaj and Shri Jai Kishan Maharaj at Kathak Kendra (National Institute of Kathak Dance). After graduating with distinction, Diwakar trained with Aditi Mangaldas. In 2008, she was awarded the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar.

Karan Gangani Dancer

Karan Gangani was born into a family with roots in the Jaipur style of Kathak. He began his dance training under the guidance of Shri Rajendra Gangani and

subsequently trained at Kathak Kendra (National Institute of Kathak Dance). He holds a scholarship from Sahitya Kala Parishad and has performed with the Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company for the past five years.

Minhaz Dancer

Minhaz Khan started his dance studies at the age of three under the guidance of Shri Zafar Mulla Khan. He also trained under Shri Ranjendra Gangani and graduated from

Kathak Kendra (National Institute of Kathak Dance) in New Delhi. Minhaz has worked with many leading choreographers and performed extensively in India. He has learnt both the Jaipur and Benaras Gharana of Kathak, and has been a part of the Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company for the past two years.

Aamrapali Bhandari Dancer

Aamrapali Bhandari was fortunate enough to learn Kathak under the tutelage of Rajendra Gangani from the age of four. After studying Kathak for

14 years, she completed her post diploma in Kathak dance at Kathak Kendra (National Institute of Kathak Dance). She

has performed throughout India and abroad, and has also completed her honours in English. She joined Drishtikon Dance Foundation in July 2015.

Sunny Shishodiya Dancer

A graduate from Kalashram, Sunny Shishodiya received his initial training from his grandfather, Ghanshyam Shishodiya, and Omi Pawar Ji. He has been training

with Birju Maharaj Ji for the past five years. Shishodiya joined The Drishtikon Dance Foundation in July 2015.

Manoj Kumar Dancer

Manoj Sonagra has been studying Kathak under the tutelage of Rajendra Gangani for the past seven years. He belongs to the Jaipur Gharana of dance and music. He

has performed in events and festivals across India, from trade fairs to Sahitya Kala Parishad. Kumar joined the Drishtikon Dance Foundation in July 2015.

Anjana Kumari Dancer

Anjana Kumari started her training under Shri Dheerendra Tiwari in Agra. Later, she joined Kathak Kendra (National Institute of Kathak Dance), New Delhi. She completed

her post diploma under Rajendra Gangani. She also did Kathak Praveen from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad. Kumari has performed in countries such as Singapore and Indonesia, and joined The Drishtikon Dance Foundation in July 2015.

Mohit Gangani Musician – tabla

Mohit Gangani started learning tabla at the age of seven from Shri Fateh Singh Gangani. He has played as an accompanist with many senior dancers and participated

in prestigious festivals all over India and abroad. He joined the Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company five years ago.

Faraz Ahmed Musician – vocalist and harmonium

Faraz Ahmed belongs to a family of Muradabad Gharana. He has studied under Shri Sadique Ahmed Khan and Shri Ghulam Sabir Khan. He has performed in

many works by leading dancers and choreographers, both nationally and internationally. He joined the Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company five years ago.

Ashish Gangani Musician – pakhawaj

Ashish Gangani comes from a family of musicians and trained under Shri Fateh Singh Gangani and Shri Ravi Shankar Upadhayay. He has performed with many

leading dancers and choreographers, and has performed with the Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company for the past five years.

Amir Khan Musician – sarangi

Amir Khan started playing the sarangi at the age of ten. He studied under his grandfather, Shri Siddique Ahmed Khan, Shri Ghulam Sabir Khan and then his

father, Shri Kamal Ahmed. He has performed both nationally and internationally, and has been with the Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company – The Drishtikon Dance Foundation on an assignment basis for the past two years.
