President’s Report

Because of Di Smith daughter’s current health challenge Di was unable to provide a report for this issue. See Page 5 for news on Tarlee Shultz.

Our Vice President Russell Byrne, (a man of few words) has provide the below (thanks to Raelz for typing it up and emailing it )

G’day Everybody,

To all our country music people -

Many thanks are due to all those who stayed back to help clean up after the last Club day.

Also it was very nice to see ‘new’ faces as walk-ups. Those who performed were Peter Tomlinson and Rose and Bill. The special guest was Bush Balladeer star Sharon Smith whom I heard later was apparently very impressed with our Club. Well, we were with her too! On that note, it pleases me to see there are still young people around continuing and promoting country music but I would like to see more of them!

Carole Sturtzel and her Band are the entertainment at the A.G.M. this month.

Well, there’s not much more to say ... I’ll see you at the show!

Russell Byrne.

Vice President.

LORRAINE’S ROUND-UP - June

Our band for the month was Midnight Special, what can one say about this band? They always entertaina and never let you down with their bright happy music. Being cheeky with each other they make you feel great, especially Warren leader of the group with his little jokes, quiz questions and giving out prizes to people who guess correctly. Once again a bright happy group enjoying their music thank you.

It was a very bright special day. Our special guest, Sharon Smith from Queensland did herself proud. Sharon is the 2009 Bush Balladeer Star Quest Winner.

She enjoyed her visit to the Club and would like to come back sometime.

We had a great variety for our walk-ups for the day. They were Kevin Merritt, Sonni Francis, Rosemarie with Billy Deer and Danny Gyory, Ian Maddern and Peter Tomlinson – Wow they were all great. I even sang a yodelling song. It was pleasing to get positive feedback on the day.

Thanks to All.

Lorraine

LORRAINE’S ROUND-UP - July

Here we are half way through the year and what a lovely day we had with the City Cowboys. They all sang with very good harmonies. Electric Piano and harmonica was great. They really enjoy what they are doing which makes a very happy band that makes the audience feel good. We will see them again next year.

Raelz, one of our hard working committee, delivered four amazing songs. Then along came 11 year old Georgia, we saw her at the end of last year. Pleased to have her back.

The exhibition sessions by the line dancers during band breaks were very good.

Thanks to all for making our day happy and bright. Thank you to all who helped us on the day as we had some committee at the Barmera festival.

Special thanks to Russell and Rhonda Byrne for coming down from Barmera then going back after our show.

See you all in July, Lorraine. (pictured at the July meeting with a black and white cow - paper holder from Betty, a borrowed cow from Nannette and a Crows Tin from Viv - LAW said “Thanks girls, it made my day”)

August show - Carole Sturtzel and Wild Oats

Thank You Rob SmithOur long standing Committee Member, Rob Smith is retiring from the Committee as Secretary so we will need a new Secretary and also some new Committee Members at our August AGM. Thanks to Rob for his years in various positions on the Club committee. Rob was President from 2001 to 2003 and has been the Secretary from 2006. He has also stepped in many times as Treasurer. Rob did this for many years for three months at time while Dean Beviss was away during Dean’s time as Treasure from 1991 to 2000. Rob has been a regular attendee at the Club for over 18 years. His time and efforts for the club have been greatly appreciated. He and Laurel were presented with the Merit Award and Life Membership in 2007. Do enjoy your retirement from Committee duties Rob. We all hope Laurel has a long list of things to keep Rob occupied!

September Show - Bernie & the Bandits In the past there have been many write-ups on Bernie & the Bandits so we will not use space in this issue to repeat the words and pictures. Please check past issues or their page on the South Australian Council for Country Music web site. (www.saccm.com)

The title sounds very melodramatic doesn’t it? Well, if you’ve noticed that one of our members has been quieter than usual at the Club – it’s been Tarlee!

This remarkable young lady has had more than her share of problems over the years and it’s her lot to deal with yet another. This is the form of operation on the hip. At this writing she has been admitted for surgery and I’m unable to give an update. I’m sure her mum, our illustrious President, Di, will eventually furnish a progress report.

I’m confident all will work out as it should, although it may be a while before Tarlee is up to running around with gusto!

If you aren’t aware of the fact, (and she hides it extremely well sometimes), this girl has a wicked sense of humour and is a really sweet person.

I know Committee, Club Members and friends join with me in sending love and wishing her a speedy recovery. In the very near future we can then look forward having Tarlee back in action again.

Raelz, Membership Officer.

July24 Update from Di via RaelzTarlee’s operation was successful. A fractured femur resulted from brittle bones, condition caused by transplant drugs. Ask her the story about the crutches! Sometimes I wonder what people use to think with. Our girl would have been greatly amused at hospital staff in this instance. Ha, ha, ha. Ah well, will be back at Club where she belongs so it’s all good news!

Barmera 2009

Jade and Maxine Burman (Robert was cropped out as he had his eyes closed!) Who says the young don’t like Country

Music?

HiI’m Jade and I’m Maxine and Robert Burman’s granddaughter. I wanted to come to the country music, so I came with my grandparents.I loved the music and the people were very nice.We took snacks and lunch. I liked to look at the people dancing around the dance floor.Ian took our photo and will send it to Grandpa’s computer.Rose sung a lovely song and everybody danced.I put my favourite number in the raffle. It was fun.Come to country music, it’s great!!!Jade Burman9 year old5th July.

Len Wakefield Memorial FundSubject to certain conditions, the purpose of the fund is to assist younger talent with proven ability: a) in entering talent quests throughout Sth Aust, Mildura and Tamworth, b) by payment or part payment of professional tuition, and c) towards the cost of a musical instrument. The fund is administered by the ACMC committee with

expenditure limited to the interest from capital invested, with all payments made to the appropriate body and NOT to the awardee. Annually an awardee is chosen at an event deemed suitable by the Full Committee by a judging panel consisting of three suitably qualified ACMC committee members. Contributions to the fund, which may be made to the club treasurer at any time will be acknowledged in the club newsletter.

At our June meeting Peter Squires (Picture above with Di Smith) generously donated a family admission ticket to Old Tailem Town to be included in the raffle. Thank you Peter.

June and Gordon Weber will celebrate their 56th wedding anniversary in August.Did everyone see them on the TV news and in the Advertiser early July? They had witnessed a disturbance in Kilburn! The media stars will be available for autographs at future meetings!

Rob McMahon thought that Peter Squires looked a lot like Slim Dusty, especially his facial profile!

There are more pictures of our July day on our website.

The admittance price for children has been set by the Committee:- under 5 free, 5-15 $3.00 and over 15 full fee!All children must be kept under control at all times!

The Pies and Pasties available at our meetings are supplied by Farmhouse Bakery, Holden Hill. They

give us a good price, please support them! Who do you think these baby picture are of?

Sadly Bob List, pedal steel player for Midnight Mountain Blue recently passed away. Condolences to his family

Most will have already heard that that Kevin Sherrah died suddenly soon after returning from Barmera. He had had an asthma attack. Most of our Commitee and many other country music enthusiasts attended his funeral. Condolences to all the family.

For those who don’t know, Kevin was the father of Steven Sherrah and Tracy Stewart and father-in-law of Michelle Sherrah and Anthony Stewart.

In Memory of Kevin Sherrah the Club sent a donation to the Asthma Foundation.

Veronica Parker’s Angel has turned out to be a boy so was re-christened Alvin!

out of the SQUAREOOTS is Out of the Square, suburban arts centres planning, packaging, programming and presenting the best possible arts and entertainment to audiences outside of Adelaide’s CBD.OOTS asked why should those in the city have all the fun? Better still, why should audiences have to travel to the city, find a park to see a performance largely with strangers and often at times that are not convenient, when those same shows can be presented locally within your own community? With the support of the City of Tea Tree Gully, City of Onkaparinga, City of Marion, City of Port Adelaide Enfield, City of Playford, City of West Torrens and the assistance of the Government of South Australia, through Arts SA, Out of the Square now develops and delivers quality arts and entertainment to a network of six metropolitan Adelaide arts centres.Working with the best artists and entertainers available in South Australia, Out of the Square will continue to grow, bringing the best matinees, cabarets, theatre, dance, music and visual arts to audiences throughout suburban Adelaide.A recent presentation was ‘Ladies of Country Featuring Carole Sturtzel (and Wild Oats), Val Brook and Heather Thiele. ‘Black’ The lighter Side of Johnny Cash, ‘Walk

the Line, Sing the songs and tell the stories of Johnny Cash’ (artists include Rohan Powell and Amber Poulton) which will be appearing Pt. Noarlunga on July 31, Marion on August 1, Hilton on August 8 and Gawler on August 15. Some venues will be cabaret style. The tickets will be $25/20. Book at the venues or on line. Many genres are presented, but there have been a number of Country Music events, for example Johnny Mac and Carole Sturtzel were on last year. With Arts SA subsidizing the events, prices are kept affordable to most! Check their website www.outofthesquare.net.au

Billy T is the man behind William Snell Productions. As well as presenting ‘Billy T & The Free Spirits perform a Tribute To Johnny Cash’, Billy also runs the Bel Canto Opera Company. His website has the words ‘The Bel Canto Opera Company is actively engaged in the production of operatic performances for the public, private and corporate audiences.’ Many may have noticed his entries for ‘Opera in the Outback’ in the gig guide. Not only that, but he runs a Dial a musician agency, runs vocal workshops and has ‘Mulga Marketing’ providing pr, promotion & marketing

solutions. In late June I thoroughly enjoyed his gig at the Rob Roy Hotel. The band consisted of Johnny Hastwell (Guitar/Harmonica), Billy ‘T’, Laura Davis (Vocals), Jason Sifis (Drums/Percussion) and Darren Hedley (Bass Guitarist). Billy even sang some opera after the main show, what a voice! More info at www.entertainment.on.netDo try and see their show when you can, you won’t regret it!Ian Fisk
