I can hardly believe it’s almost December. Soon, we will begin asking each other, “Are you ready for Christmas?”
Most of the time, we will reply with how many gifts we have purchased and made, and those gifts we still need to get. We will talk about how many cookies we have baked, and how many we still have to make and ship. We will talk about the decorations we have put up. We will list the parties we are hosting and how many we are attending.
Pastors answer the question, “Are you ready for Christmas?” differently, when we are wearing our pastor’s hat (or collar). We will list the number of services and events we have prepared and how many messages we are giving. And we will remind folks that Christmas is not really about the gifts we buy, or the decorations we spread
around, or the desserts we bake. Christmas is really about God coming to live with us in the flesh, God with us, as a human baby who grows up to give his life for us.
Take time out for Jesus this Advent. Pause and reflect as we light the Advent candles on Sundays. Set up and use your own Advent wreath and light the candles every day for a few moments as you pray. Add mid-week worship to your schedule, one Tuesday and two Wednesdays this year.
Shop with Jesus’ love this year. You may remember the heart stickers that were part of the sermon a few weeks ago. I invited you to put them on your credit cards or wallet to remind you that everything you have comes from God, with love. As you use your cards this Christmas shopping season, remember that we give to others with love, because

God first gave love to us.
Christmas is really about the gift God has given us in Jesus, who comes to us to share the good news of God’s love and forgiveness. As you get ready for Christmas, remember it’s about the love; the rest is incidental in comparison.

Yes, I know we all have a lot on our calendars for December. Remember we need baked good as we are hosting Christians United on Tuesday, December 2nd.
So, here are some happenings not in December but also into January, 2015 for planning ahead.
As you read this we will have already decorated the church for Christmas but we also have to think about undecorating the church. Please put January 10th on the calendar to undecorate. That should be a date after the Epiphany.
Also on January 10th there will be a pancake breakfast hosted by the Youth Going to Detroit and afterward there will be a presentation by EMS about fall prevention. Please be generous to the youth.
On January 25 there is the annual congregational meeting. After the meeting the Youth Going to Detroit will host a roast turkey luncheon. Please be generous to the youth.
Need more information? Please contact Deacon Diane.

Two Worship Services– Christmas Eve
Critic’s Corner
Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline
An interesting book based on true experiences. In New York City in 1929 the Children’s Aid Society decided to take the Irish orphans and any other orphans available and ship them to the mid-west to what they thought were better homes. Some homes were good and many were not good. The kids had
to give up their names and identity-some were worked to almost death, almost starved and the educational mandate didn’t follow thru. This a story of some of our history….and not all that pleasant.
You are invited to post your own book on Critics Corner.
Angel Tree
Our “Angel Tree” is on display so check it out and take one of the angels to help our needy families for Christmas. Angels and unwrapped gifts with the receipts need to be back at Hope by December 15, so Santa’s elves can wrap and deliver the gifts. There is a box on the narthex for your purchases.
Thank you Barb, for printing the angels and help with this ministry.

210– a new record!!!!! We finished filling our Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes at our November 5th gathering and filled 116 boxes! Those added to the previous 94, gave us a grand total of 210. Terry Lucente came to Hope at 8:30AM to help Carole Warden set up all the tables and sort the items according to age groups. Then at 1:00PM, the ladies began filling the shoeboxes. Thank you Judy, Joan, Hazel, Casey, Ruth, Lempi, Edith, and her friend Rose. Snacks and fellowship followed all that hard work.
On December 3, the ladies will meet to make gifts and cards for shut-ins and nursing home residents, as well as prepare to celebrate “the Birthday of Jesus.” Martha Circle December 3 at 1:00PM Classroom 3 Luther Hall

Thank you! Thank you to all who helped reach our goal and exceed it this year for Operation Christmas Child with Shoebox Ministry! It is a year-long project of buying, collecting, praying, supporting the fund raisers, and actually filling the shoeboxes.
No easy task, but with so many generous people at Hope and friends, we are able to make a difference in the lived of over 200 children! May God bless each of you for your part in helping us in this wonderful ministry.
for him, and thus became the model for Santa Claus, whose modern name comes from the Dutch Sinterklass, it-self from a series of elisions and cor-ruption of the transliteration of “Saint Nicholas”.
In 325 he was one of many bishops to answer the request of Constantine and appeared in the First Council of Nicaea and one of the bishops who signed the Nicene Creed.
Did you ever wonder about the author of “Angels from the Realms of Glory”?
Having been made an orphan in his early 20’s James Montgomery began employment in the Sheffield Iris newspaper in Sheffield, England. He purchased the newspaper when the owners had to flee because of an inciting editorial. On two occasions James Montgomery was thrown into prison but became a prison celebrity and used his newly acquired fame for this favorite issues-chief among them was the Gospel.
Early on Christmas Eve, 1816, James (then aged 45) was deeply impressed by Luke 2:13. His poem was set to music and first sung on Christmas Day, 1821, in a Moravian Church in England.

Saint Nicholas
March 15, 270-Dec. 6, 343
Saint Nicolas also called Nikolaos of Myra was a historic 4th Century Chris-tian saint and Greek Bishop of Myra (part of modern day Turkey) in Lycia. Because of the many miracles at-tributed to his intercession he is also known as Nikolaos the Wonder Work-er. He had a reputation for secret gift giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out

Here’s a great recipe from Carole Warden for your holiday baking! Candy Cane Cookies( makes about 4 dozen cookies) 1 cup shortening (half butter or margarine) 1 cup sifter confectioner sugar 1 egg 1 and one/half tsp. almond extract 1 tsp. vanilla 2 and one/half cups Gold Medal Flour 1 tsp. salt One/half tsp. red food coloring One/half cup crushed peppermint candy One/half cup granulated sugar Heat oven to 375 degrees. Mix shortening, sugar, egg, and
flavorings thoroughly. Mix flour and salt, stir into shortening mixture. Divide dough in half. Blend red food coloring into one half. Roll a 4 inch strip (using a tsp dough from each color). For smooth even strips, roll them back and forth on lightly floured board. Place strips side by side, press lightly together and twist like ropes. For best results, complete cookies one at a time. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Curve top down to form handle of cane. Bake about 8 or 9 minutes until lightly browned. =While still warm remove from baking sheet with spatula and sprinkle with mix of candy and sugar. Be a Hope’s Newsletter contributor! Drop off or send your favorite recipe to Barb Decker to include in future Newsletters!

Jacob’s Journey
JACOB'S JOURNEY will restart on Monday, December 1 from 1:00PM to 3:00PM in Luther Hall. We will start with a general review of the sweep of history as presented from Genesis through the New Testament. Then we will proceed with our study of End Times as presented in the many prophecies of the Old and New Testaments passages. We will look at the "Signs of the Times" - not only those spoken of by Jesus and the apostles, but also those which have happened and are happening in our own lifetime. These studies will lead us into the final preview of the "end of the story"- the Book of Revelation. As there was a beginning in Genesis, there is also an end in Revelation, and it appears that we are rapidly moving into that period of prophetic revelation. You definitely will like the information presented, for the Bible gives us more information about the Second Coming of Christ than it did as to the First and that event happened exactly as the prophets had foretold. So we can be sure that the Second Coming will happen exactly as predicted in the many Old and New Testament prophecies of God's Word. An examination of these passages can only give us an awareness of the nearness of His return and our responsibility to be in a right relationship with our Lord as we await that great moment. Plan to attend and bring a friend. Blessings, Anita O'Donnell

I would like to thank Louis Dias, Jim Earl, Dick Regan, Bill Kessel, Larry Casper, Renate Wilms-Rovin, Hans Witter & friend Trevor, Harold Skidmore, Diane Kahler, Barbara Decker, and Kerry Reed for all their help. We recorded (100 hours) since our last report not including the work that Hans was doing on the altar.
We have had a busy summer keeping the grass cut and repairing various items around the church. Hans Witter is still working on items in the sanctuary and the sanctuary is just beautiful with the new
altar.
We are presently in the bid process to paint the outside of the church and the runway to Luther Hall.
The new sign has been voted on and we will be working on that in the future along with roof leak repairs and replacing the ceiling tile in Luther Hall.
We have saved a lot of money making our own repairs but some things will have to be done by contractors so please consider donating to our improvement fund.

In the never-ending quest for improved communication, you out-did yourselves at the latest congregational meeting. People spoke in favor of and against the motion to purchase a new sign, feeling free to voice their opinions. People spoke respectfully.
As far as I know, there was no “meeting after the meeting” to discuss the proceedings of the meeting in negative terms. We are making great progress in communication and I am proud of you. Pastor Lynn

“With Christ In Our Home”
Hope subscribes quarterly to a publication entitled “Christ In Our Home, and the daily bible readings follow the ELCA seasonal messages. The bible readings of Sunday you will already have read during the course of the week to enhance your
understanding of scripture. This publication is in an older offering plate on a table by the door going to Luther Hall. Slipping a dollar bill in that plate to cover the cost of the publication would be nice but not necessary. It’s more important that you read the daily Bible inspirations.

God’s work, Our Hands: Ebola Outbreak Response
The Situation: In the last several months, the Ebola outbreak has claimed thousands of lives. The virus has spread rapidly, and with no approved vaccine and a high fatality rate, the World Health Organization is now calling it “one of the world’s most lethal diseases.” Ebola has spread to multiple countries, the hardest hit being Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. In addition to health care, one of the most urgent needs is food. As people in affected areas are quarantined to their homes, towns are being shut down to limit the spread of the virus and people are not able to work, harvest crops or purchase food. The shipment of food has also stopped because peo-ple from other countries fear contracting the virus. “We need food,” says the Rev. D. Jensen Seyenkulo, bishop of the Lutheran Church in Liberia. “There is a saying now: ‘If we don’t die of Ebola, we will die of starvation.’” Our Response: Lutheran Disaster Response is committed to walking with our brothers and sisters affected by the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Operating through our partners and companion churches, together we are:
Supplying and shipping essential protective gear and supplies to protect medical workers at Phebe Hospital and Curran Lutheran Hospital in Liberia.
Providing food assistance to the Lutheran Church in Liberia and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sierra Leone.
Raising awareness and providing sensitization messages on the symptoms and prevention methods of Ebola.
Completing construction of an isolation center at Phebe Hospital and School of Nursing that meets World Health Organization standards.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and its predecessor church have walked with the people of Liberia for more than 150 years. Our long-standing relationship with our companions in Libe-ria and Sierra Leone provides a strong foundation to respond holistically to the needs of those who are suffering and living with the threat of Ebola.
What Can You Do?
Pray: Pray for those affected or threatened by the virus that they may be granted healing and hope.
Give:
Gifts from people like you allow us to respond to those who are most vulnerable. - See more at: http://elca.org/Our-Work/Relief-and-Development/Lutheran-Disaster-Response/Our-Impact/Ebola#sthash.aKh3ulDP.dpuf
This year the theme for Advent mid-week worship is “Prepare the Royal Highway.” Highways, pathways, gates, and journeys figure prominently in the imagery of Advent. We hear the voice shouting, "Prepare the way of the Lord! Make straight the path!" We witness the unexpected detours for Elizabeth and Zechariah, Mary and Joseph. We make way in our hearts and lives for our God.
Because of the way the calendar falls, we will have three midweek services, Tuesday December 2 which is also Christians United in Christ at Hope; plus Wednesday’ December 10 and 17. Below is an outline of each week, skipping week two content.
December 2, Week of Advent 1: Highway under construction
How exactly do you prepare a highway for God? A passage from 1 Thessalonians offers a construction blueprint: rejoice, pray, give thanks, hold fast to what is good. In this way, we make a straight path into our hearts for the coming of Christ.
December 10, Week of Advent 3: Standing at the crossroads
Decisions, decisions, decisions. Would Zechariah and Elizabeth doubt the angel's message, or prepare for a newborn in their advanced age? Would Joseph quietly dismiss his pregnant betrothed, or accept the responsibility of raising Jesus as his own? When standing at a crossroads, do you also choose the leap of faith?
December 17, Week of Advent 4: Detour ahead
The unexpected inevitably happens. Angels burst in with news, unplanned pregnancies alter plans,
the government demands registration in a distant and overcrowded town. God chooses the most radical detour of all: coming to our world in human form.
Please join us each week as we celebrate the advent of God with us, and travel the twists and turns of life as a follower of Jesus.
