History

Normandy and history are one ... This assumes that one with a capital H, which takes its source in the epic

maritime Vikings. These fearsome pirates from Denmark and Norway made a reign of terror over a century.

However, they left a cultural heritage including architectural quality in Normandy.

These Norsemen, led by their leader Rollo, conquered the territory to lay the foundations of a rich civilization in the

European mind already. In 911, they founded the Duchy of Normandy. In turn, William the Conqueror, a

descendant of Vikings born in 1027 in Falaise (Calvados), affix the stone to the edifice of history by becoming king

of England in 1066. Meanwhile, the monks of Mount builded on a rocky outcrop protected by Saint Michael's a real

marvel! Normandy became for centuries in the temple of meditation in the shade of its many monasteries ...

Integrated into the kingdom of France in 1204, she was particularly struck by the effects of the Hundred Years War

and wars of religion, the Normans having converted to Protestantism more than other French. In the twentieth

century, the Allied landings in Normandy ravaged cities, including Saint-Lô, Caen and Le Havre. Normandy was

indeed a point of departure for the conquest of Europe by the Allieds, ending the German occupation. On June 6,

1944 was launched Operation Overlord, the largest amphibious operation in history military world, conducted

simultaneously on several beaches of Calvados and Manche.

Le Moulin. - The construction of the Mill of Abenon is presumed to date from the 1870s. Originally it was part of the

thirty water mills built on along the Valley Orbiquet between the source of that tributary of the Touques, located in

La Folletière-Abenon and Orbec-en-Auge 4.5 kilometers downstream. These mills used to grind grain, and also in

tanning. The Mill Abenon was a grain mill.

The Valley of the Orbiquet River downstream of the mill, and at dawn

Professional use of the Mill stopped after the Second World War, in 1954.

The site was then used in farming, especially pig farming in the 1960s. So some farm buildings still remain.

The garden, side living room and kitchen, full southern exposure

In the late 60s, the mill was bought by an industrialist of French pharmacy, for use of its river banks and in

particular fishing.

In 1979 the mill was acquired by its present owners, the Abadie family.

To date, we can say that apart from the existing kitchen, dining room, bedroom, living room and TV room, the rest

was in poor condition: stairs felt, cracked floors, and rotten window frames without glass, frame and roof ageless

letting the water pour. Toilets, outdoor, consist of a wooden hut, and a barrel topped by a perforated plate.

Besides the fact that the mill pond, brick canal supplying water to the wheel of the mill, poured from the wrong side,

flooding the basement of the mill each flood, instead of pouring water into the river below.

The garden is then made of brambles two meters tall, nettles and foxgloves, fruit trees were drowned in the

greenery. The hangar cons path was about to fall, as it bent 20 degrees north.

From 1980 to 1984, development work of the ground level are undertaken (creation of two rooms at the back side

of the mill wheel, a bathroom, the entrance and toilet), and the rehabilitation of stairs, exterior Serving Gateway

(setting), and access the basement and first floor, besides creating the portal and rehabilitation of access and

garden, demolition of the main body of the pig on South slope.

From 1988 to 1991, the work of the entire first floor are made. Previously, the first floor was the workshop of the

miller, and there were still some pieces of metal milling, without decorative interest, removed during rehabilitation.

The first floor balcony was originally used to move bags of grain in and sacks of flour to return.

The garden is also decorated with new fruit trees, cherry trees, plum trees, pear and apple trees, raspberry, currant

and ornamental flower beds.

The mill is frequently used by family, originating in the Paris region, and friends of the family, both as a second home that weekend as a holiday home in the summer.

Geography

The mill is located on the town of La Folletière-Abenon. The Folletière is the name of nearby village that is located up the river, 800 meters upstream from the mill. Abenon was the village where is located the mill, and downstream. Normandy is made up of two administrative regions of Upper Normandy and Lower Normandy. Haute-Normandie comprises two departments: Seine-Maritime (76) and Eure (27). Lower Normandy has three departments: Calvados (14), Manche (50) and Orne (61).

The mill of Abenon is at the heart of the “Pays d'Auge”. This Pays is bounded by the Valley of Touques River (which empties the Orbiquet River from the mill) to the east, the Dives River on the west, Côte Fleurie on the north and hills of Argentan on south.

This region grove, whose towns and villages bear the names of Camembert, Livarot or Pont l'Évêque is, with cows, apple trees, their cottages, regarded as the archetype of Normandy. Many of its cities, as Orbec, Lisieux, its port,

Honfleur and Trouville-sur-Mer, its beach resorts, Cabourg, Deauville, Houlgate and Villers-sur-Mer and its villages or towns, Camembert or Pont-l'Evêque has been recognized nationally and internationally.

The Pays d‟Auge is a hilly, wooded, dotted with woods or forests (forest of Saint-Gatien, forest Gouffern, etc..).

The Auge includes the townships of Blangy-le-Château, Cabourg Cambremer Cormeilles partly Dozulé, Exmes, Gace, Honfleur, Lisieux, Livarot, Mézidon-Canon Orbec Pont l'Eveque, Saint - Pierre-sur-Dives Troarn, Trouville-sur-Mer, Trun and Vimoutiers.

It is, undoubtedly, the land of horses and stables par excellence (even more evident in the Pays d'Auge Orne): Hippodrome d'Argentan, du Pin National Stud, Deauville racecourse ... But it is also the birthplace of the famous Norman cheeses: Camembert, Livarot or Pont-l'évêque, cheeses from villages and towns eponyms. Auge The cuisine is also represented by the spirits of country-specific Normandy: Calvados, cider, etc..

Lisieux is the principal city of the Auge. Located in the center, and populated by just over 20 000 inhabitants, it is also experiencing a tourist and is a place of pilgrimage with its Basilica of St. Therese of Lisieux. Other cities are Auge of Deauville, Trouville-sur-Mer, Honfleur, Vimoutiers Orbec and Cabourg.

It is a country strongly dedicated to tourism (tourism and resort). The country is classified Pays d'Art et d'Histoire.

- the « keys » of the mill of abenon -

access The mill is located about one hour forty from Paris via the A13 / A14 and then A28 towards Bordeaux - Exit 15 -

Orbec (150 kilometers by road, and 175 by Highway).

GPS - Degrees: 48 ° 59'10 N - 0 ° 24'54 E - Decimal: 48.9861 N - 0.4149 E

From Orbec:

Turn around the church and take the Rue de la Croix aux Lyonnais.

Follow this street until the exit of Orbec.

At stop sign, take the D130 opposite, direction "Le Sap - La Folletière-Abenon”.

A 1.1 km (0.6mi) away, turn left towards the D130A "La Folletière-Abenon”.

Then to 1.7 km (1.0mi) away, take the paved road that goes down just after the trash depot.

150 meters down, your heart is torn between two wooden bridges, the mill is right. You are arrived.

Animals

Small pets, well-bred and civilized (!) are allowed in the Mill, their potential damage must be insured by you (liability

policy). Any damage done to them will be at your expense.

- A horse in the meadow above the Mill --

Barbecue

You will find in the basement floor a steel grill, or otherwise grids that you can land on bricks located on the stone

masonry platform, 10 meters above the living room. It's your choice ... There's no charcoal assured on the

premises.

Wood

There is wood in the shed, use it, whether for a barbecue or fire.

Camping

You can camp, sleeping under the stars in the garden ... There is no equipment at the mill, however.

Equipment degradation

If you break equipment, be kind to let us know so that we replace it before the arrival of new occupants.

Heating

The mill is heated with wood-fired boiler logs, and for that reason is not lent for winter rentals. If you are cold and do

not want to use the fireplace, or if the heat thereof is low, you have several electric coil.

Page 7: Address : Le Moulin d’Abenon Orbec-en-Auge GPS - 48°59’10 N …s3.e-monsite.com/2011/03/16/23278024the-keys-of-the-mill... · 2011-03-16 · century, the Allied landings in Normandy

HOT Water

The hot water is produced by an electric boiler, two tanks of 200 liters, that means, about a dozen showers of 20

liters, or two and a half baths. If you are many, consider spreading your showers between morning and evening.

Fireplace

You use the fireplace whenever you want, the obligation is to use it as a “good father” :

• Avoid and eliminate the embers exploded on the wood of the floor

• Turn on the firewall when you are away or go to bed

• Do not major outbreak, 35-40 cm (15-18 inches) above the fireplace; this chimney is not a castle chimney and is

not designed for that : the risk is chimney fire.

With the pot on the edge of the fireplace, you will make an excellent pot-au-feu.

Keys

There is a set of keys containing the keys of the gate, the main door and exterior doors from the lounge and dining

room, plus a key of the last two gates. If you leave the mill in several groups, you can always give a game to a

group and one game to another.

Orbec downtown offers all the shops and two supermarkets.

In downtown, we recommend all shops including the butcher, the fishmonger (end of town), which manufactures

trays of seafood at unbeatable prices and always impeccably fresh (plateau at 20 € per person - prices 2010), the

bakery Retrod'Or, and opposite it, Pastry of sisters Domer (worth the detour). A grocery store, Fortin, right side,

proposes the need for food and Normandy cheeses ripened with care.

In the center always, you find two pharmacies, two tobacco shops (one in town center, the other end of town,

opposite the fish shop), banks and hairdressers, a newsagent.

In short, the city centre is rich in independent businesses ...

Dining - local products

There is no food provided at the Mill. It's your turn to improve cooking ...

Normandy is rich in many famous productions in many food sectors: cheese, butter, cream, milk, cider, but also

meat, seafood (fish and shellfish), vegetables, sugar, poultry ...

Excerpt from Normandy Tourism site: "For Norman, eating well is more than tradition ... it is a duty! His cuisine is

simple, from milk and apples, it takes a profusion of products that adorn the plates of a natural flavor. Normandy is

present on all fronts and is one of the few areas providing food and whole variety of appetizers to desserts, plus

beverages!

The Norman pick his food at sea and in the orchard, and his table is lined, flounders from Dieppe and Normandy

oysters.

Lambs of salted pasture, chicken Vallée d'Auge and the Rouen duck, its breeding is matched only by the soft

cheeses: the heart of Neuchatel, the Pont-L‟Evêque, Livarot nicknamed " Colonel "and the round Camembert of

Marie Harel known worldwide.

For dessert, the Bourdelot or teurgoule and the slats for the caramel or the Isigny sugar apple of Rouen. The drink

should be dry or sweet cider, silent or sparkling perry, interspersed occasionally with a “Trou Normand”, which is to

take a break of Calvados alcohol with apple ice cream, in the middle of dinner. The spirit of the apple is in the

Calvados and is found in the Pommeau. Happiness is finally a tear of Benedictine.

River

The river access is not secure : access is closed, but the protection does not meet security requirements required

by law on the safety of pools and ponds. The responsibility of renters can not be blamed for this.

The Orbiquet is a tributary of the Touques (right bank).

30 kilometers long, this river rises south of Orbec to Folletière-Abenon, immediately directs its course north-west, to

Lisieux joined by a valley before flowing into this city with Touques. Its source is said Vauclusien whose resurgence

during floods can "spit" a tidal wave of a meter high or more. The average flow of the source is about 450L/Sec

making it the fourth largest "Vaucluse" source of France.

Prior to the spring-Folletière Abenon the Orbiquet be powered by at least two underground rivers. The various

exploration by divers cavers for more than 30 years have recognized 815 meters of tunnels into two branches. The

underground drainage system would extend further. The Orbiquet is so powerful that a mill was running sixty

meters from the source, of which only the wheel remains. There is a legend that claims many wisps emerging from

the source. That is the origin of the name of the town (wisp in french is said „feu follet‟, so La Folletière).
