ADDITIONAL TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR CALF OPERATION FLY FREE Since flies often lay eggs in fresh manure and wet, decomposing feed, pay attention to cleaning up all areas of the dairy where these conditions exist. • Feeding ClariFly ® to weaned and adult animals in the operation is another important step in an Integrated Pest Management program (IPM). Focus on sanitation like cleaning up spilled feed, rotting vegetation, old silage and other fly breeding sources. Incorporate cultural controls like keeping weeds mowed and repairing leaky waterers. Use adult fly controls such as traps, sprays or baits to control adult flies that may migrate from outside your facility. Parasitic wasps can also be part of the IPM. THE BENEFITS OF USING elim-A-fly ® Add-Pack IN YOUR OPERATION EASY TO USE Simply add elim-A-fly ® Add-Pack to the calves’ milk every day instead of the chore of spraying, baiting or bombing adult flies. COST-EFFECTIVE elim-A-fly ® Add-Pack has a fixed cost of pennies per day unlike the variable cost of sprays, baits and traps. UNIQUE MODE OF ACTION The active ingredient in elim-A-fly ® Add-Pack, diflubenzuron, interferes with the regrowth of the exoskeleton, causing the larvae to die before it can become an adult fly. HIGH PERFORMANCE There is a low risk of resistance in the target species (flies) due to elim-A-fly ® Add-Pack’s unique mode of action. SAFE TO USE ON CALVES elim-A-fly ® Add-Pack has a low risk to mammals since it only affects species with an exoskeleton, like flies. No matter how you feed, you can count on elim-A-fly ® Add-Pack since it’s approved for use in both medicated and non-medicated calf milk replacer and whole milk programs. YOUR FLY CONTROL SOLUTIONelim-A-Fly® Add-Pack with ClariFly® is an EPA-registered feed additive containing diflubenzuron, a larvicide that controls the development of hornflies, face flies, house flies and stable flies in areas populated by confined dairy and beef cattle. elim-A-fly® Add-Pack is labeled for addition to reconstituted milk replacer or whole milk.

How elim-A-fly® Add-Pack works:Insects have an external skeleton, an “exoskeleton,” made of chitin. The active ingredient in elim-A-fly® Add-Pack, diflubenzuron, targets immature flies by either contact or ingestion, and inhibits the deposition of chitin during molting. Without a functioning exoskeleton, the larvae die before they can become breeding adult flies that can bother your animals. elim-A-fly® Add-Pack does not kill adult flies but does control flies by stopping the development of the fly larvae. This unique mode of action also makes it safe to use on your calves.

What is the correct dosage of elim-A-fly® Add-Pack:Feed 0.1 ounce of elim-A-fly® Add-Pack per 100 pounds of body weight. This amount provides the label feeding rate of 0.1 mg/kg of body weight of the active ingredient. elim-A-fly® Add-Pack can be fed the full daily dose once per day or it can be divided equally into each feeding. Be sure to take advantage of the convenient dosage calculator available at www.elim-A-fly.com.

When to use elim-A-fly® Add-Pack:Start feeding elim-A-fly® Add-Pack early in the spring, 30 days before flies begin to appear, and continue feeding throughout the summer and into the fall, until cold weather restricts fly activity. To minimize the number of over wintering pupae, feed elim-A-fly® Add-Pack 30 days past first frost.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

If elim-A-fly® Add-Pack kills flies, will it hurt my calves or other animals on my operation?Mammals are not affected by the active ingredient in elim-A-fly® Add-Pack and furthermore, it is not absorbed into the intestinal tract of the calf.

If I have fly control in my calf starter, do I need to use elim-A-fly® Add-Pack? Why?Young calves typically consume very small amounts of starter in the first few weeks of life and starter consumption can be variable from calf to calf. Adding elim-A-fly® Add-Pack in the calf’s milk assures a consistent and effective dose of fly control through the proper dose of active product in the calves manure.

Can I feed elim-A-fly® Add-Pack to other animals on my farm? No. elim-A-fly® Add-Pack is only labeled for use in preweaned calves consuming milk replacer or whole milk. It is a violation of federal law to use a product for a use that is not on the label.

Are there any environmental concerns or any problems if other animals mistakenly consume elim-A-fly® Add-Pack:Diflubenzuron, the active ingredient in elim-A-fly® Add-Pack, is a pesticide that is believed to pose low risk to human health and the environment. It has the following advantages over existing conventional pesticides: • Low impact on human health • Lower toxicity to non-target organisms (birds, fish, plants) • Low use rates • Low pest resistance potential • Compatibility with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices

The EPA concluded that it is practically non-toxic to avian species, small mammals, freshwater and marine fish and bees. However, data does show that diflubenzuron is toxic to freshwater and marine aquatic invertebrates.

WHY FLY CONTROL IS NEEDED IN YOUR OPERATIONFlies are significant pests on farms, both on the animal and on the premises, by potentially decreasing productivity, spreading disease or simply acting as a nuisance to animals and people.

How are flies costly to an operation?Flies are known to: • Decrease milk production • Decrease average daily gain on growing cattle • Spread disease

For example, it has been shown that milk production loss can range from 10–30% due to the effects of biting flies. Beef calf weaning weights have been shown to decrease 12–14 pounds due to blood loss and irritation from biting flies.

Calf hutches are popular breeding grounds for flies - why?Flies complete their life cycle by laying eggs in fresh manure or wet, decomposing feed and manure. All of these conditions commonly exist in calf rearing facilities.

Flies carry bacteria and spread diseases. Why is that especially important for calf raisers and calves?Flies are directly involved in the spread of bacteria causing pinkeye in cattle and creating new infections in the immature udders of calves. This irritation of the teats through biting increases the potential risk—and spread—of mastitis.

Common flies on dairy operations. • Horn flies and stable flies cause significant economic damage through biting and blood feeding. • Face flies and house flies are known for spreading disease.

All these fly species are a serious nuisance to cattle and people on and around the operation.
