....Adcote is a prestigious school which has for over a century been educating girls in a tradition of excellence. The school is a unique and vibrant girls’ school, where girls can join at four and continue their education until they are eighteen years old.

We offer superb pastoral care, outstanding academic results and a broad and well balanced curriculum. The school’s recent success has attracted many new pupils and word of our strong reputation is spreading across Shropshire.

Single sex schools have not only proved to be successful in achieving high examination grades, they give the girls and young ladies

opportunities for leadership and uninhibited participation in all areas and at all levels.

Very importantly, politeness, good manners including table manners and a smart appearance are all important parts of an Adcote education. Enthusiastic and dedicated teaching professionals are the essence of Adcote’s success.

Small class sizes make individual attention a reality. Specialist learning support is always available and similarly, expertise in challenging the gifted and talented pupils ensures that all the girls fulfil and exceed their potential in at least one field of study.

Apart from being an independent day and boarding school for girls...

Where is Adcote?Established in 1907, Adcote School is an elite independent boarding school for girls based in Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury is a quaint, traditionally British town in the county of Shropshire in the West Midlands region of England.

Shrewsbury is a historic market town with significant medieval heritage, having been founded c. 800 AD. The town features over 660 historic listed buildings including several examples of timber framing from the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as historic sites such as Shrewsbury Castle and Shrewsbury Abbey. The town hosts one of the oldest and largest horticultural events in the country as

well as being the birthplace of Charles Darwin, the leading author of the evolution theory. A monument of the quantum leap is displayed in the town centre.

Shrewsbury is also home to the world’s first skyscraper. Ditherington Flax Mill, built in 1797 is the first multi-story iron-framed building in the world. Some of the fun things to do in Shrewsbury include visiting Shrewsbury Castle; having a walk across the Welsh Bridge; a tour around Shrewsbury Abbey; a boat ride on the river Severn or watching a play at the Theatre Severn.

Why Choose Adcote? We believe it is essential to ensure our pupils are happy and have the perfect environment in which to learn, develop and succeed. Starting any new school can sometimes be a daunting experience.

This encourages friendship and excellent interaction between all members of the School community. New girls discover a caring environment and family atmosphere, with an overriding ethos of respect, courtesy, good manners and kindness which enables them to be happy and to thrive.

The exceptionally inclusive nature of Adcote means that it is a warm, friendly and exciting place to be, where expectations are high and learning is fun. There is a tangible sense of community at Adcote but with genuine emphasis on focusing on each girl as an individual.

The girls’ achievements, whatever their nature, are highly regarded, allowing them to develop a sense of their own significance and pride. Whilst the girls enjoy a quiet rural location, we are mindful that we are a multi-cultural community.

We are outward looking in our attitude and ethos. We are an

Anglican school and the girls may attend our local churches, but we celebrate all faiths and cultures and seek to extend the hand of friendship to all. There is a wonderful programme of visiting speakers and we encourage our girls to be socially and culturally aware.

We promote links with local schools and offer fundraising support to a number of charities on a regional and international level.

OLGA“What I like about Adcote is the fact that there are so many nationalities, and a diverse group of people. I find it fascinating talking to other girls at the school. You find out new things about the world, about their countries and about their culture. This is something I thoroughly enjoy. Being at a boarding school is a great experience, a great opportunity to make friends around the world”

FamilyEthosEach student has a personal tutor to offer friendship, support and guidance. In addition to tutors, responsibility for the care, personal development, welfare and general happiness of boarders rests with their resident housemistress who is assisted by additional resident matrons.

They provide the care, comfort and support which is so important for the girls’ well-being and success, nurturing and guiding the youngest boarder through to the maturity of the sixth form student. By encouraging self-discipline and a sense of responsibility, we seek to promote self-confidence and assurance without arrogance.

Adcote’s underlying principle is consideration for others and we have a strong sense of both family and traditional values in the House. There is a happy mixture of local girls and those whose homes are elsewhere in the UK, with students from other countries who have chosen to study in England.

Our aim is to provide a safe and homely environment that enables each girl in our care to become a self-sufficient and independent young woman, fully equipped to face the challenges of life in the 21st century.

11

Page 12: Adcote International Prospectus

At Adcote we offer an excellent well-rounded education that serves as a foundation for future achievement.

Adcote girls gain experience in a wide range of subjects and the curriculum is supplemented by a lively extra-curricular programme. Our after-school activities are available each day until 6pm.

Small class sizes enable our dedicated teachers to deliver tailored learning for pupils of all academic abilities, including the highest.

Individual help is available for any girls who require support with their studies or to help them overcome a specific learning difficulty.

Here at Adcote we have made a conscious effort to maintain an average class ratio from 1:5 to 1:15.

This is to ensure that all our girls, get the individual attention they need, making them feel comfortable to ask questions.

The teachers are flexible and will accommodate us where they can. They are really hands on and supportive.

ResultsExcellent

Achievement, confidence and happiness are central to the philosophy of Adcote, where girls are encouraged to reach their full potential. The high academic attainment of many of our pupils guarantees that all leave Adcote well equipped for higher education. Excellent academic results are viewed as the bedrock upon which everything else depends.

In 2013, the School was ranked 4th nationally for the performance of pupils at A level according to the Department of Education, when comparing the average UCAS point score per pupil.

In the last three years, the school has achieved a 5% ranking for the performance of pupils.

Our leavers gain places at Russell Group universities and have also found success in applying to universities of their choice overseas. In 2013 at GCSE, 100% of pupils achieved the equivalent of at least 5 passes at grades A* - C and 90% of all equivalent grades were awarded A* - C.

Throughout the School, pupils’ progress and attainment is regularly monitored. Parents are kept fully informed of girls’ achievements and effort through formal and informal meetings and reports. We pride ourselves on encouraging girls to make the most of their individual talents and to achieve beyond their target grades.

Years 12-13FormSixth

Adcote Sixth Form is a dynamic and purposeful community, which offers a unique and fulfilling experience...

to enable our students to grow as individuals. Our outstanding academic results at A Level, our Oxbridge success, and entry to other top Universities, accounts for our recent, and growing, popularity.

Our Sixth Form offers small class sizes with specialist, first class teaching in a wide range of A level subjects, as well as the opportunity to study

BTEC courses. Each pupil is able to discover and develop her talents and potential throughout the two years of the Sixth Form, within a caring and supportive environment.

At Adcote, we prepare our girls for University application and selection interviews, and encourage our pupils to apply for positions of responsibility within the school. We strive to inspire

them to participate in, and initiate, extra-curricular activities all of which help to prepare them for the world beyond school and university.

The Sixth Form is an important time as further education is dependent on your AS and A2 results.

One of the main roles of a Sixth Former is to take on responsibility within the school through prefect positions. We believe this has helped students to become more confident and independent.

There is a strong link between pupils and staff and this enhances the efficient running of the school. The responsibilities given help pupils to gain self-respect and develop

personal skills. Adcote Sixth Form pupils leave us as confident young ladies with poise, who are ready to take their place in society.

We encourage our students to apply for positions of responsibility. Holding such positions within the school really helps to prepare students for the world beyond school and university. These roles are in addition to acting as role models to the younger girls.

Our Sixth Form ensures that each student is able to develop her talents and potential throughout the two

years of the Sixth Form. The wide range of extra-curricular activities available to all our Sixth Formers enables them to fulfil their potential as individuals and enriches their experience.

You will find our Sixth Form a friendly, vibrant and supportive environment. We look forward to welcoming you!

The environment was really nice and knowing that when you arrive at the school you are welcome and can make friends with everyone straight away, was a great plus for me.

As a day student, I was welcomed to participate in activities during the weekend and half-term, it’s great to spend time with my friends who boarded

I was also able to do so many things at Adcote and have various leadership roles which helped me to secure an unconditional offer to the University of Birmingham. Without Adcote, I don’t think that would have been possible.

I chose Adcote School mainly because the school is located in beautiful countryside which is surrounded by the beauties of nature and all these bring a very good learning environment and atmosphere to students.

Moreover, the size of classes at Adcote is small, which is much easier for teacher to focus on every single student and give a better interaction between student and teacher.

Furthermore, this school also provides different types of sport activity which helps students to discover with different types of talent.

There are many opportunities to give the girls a sense of responsibility and an awareness of the needs of others, within a tolerant and caring environment.

At Adcote we celebrate the differences in our languages, our cultures and our heritage, by encouraging our overseas students to teach us about their own countries.

Our girls are enquiring and curious and relish the opportunity to make friends and learn about others. We want to acknowledge and have pride in

our cultural diversity by investigating our own community and using the resources we have to learn about the world around us.

Our international girls have performed at Adcote and in local primary schools in their own native language or costume, seeing how animated and interested others are in whom we are and where we come from.

Our students are often invited home, across the miles, to visit their friends and experience first-hand the differences in societies and traditions.

Life as a boarderWe welcome boarders from the age of 8 years old through to the Sixth Form. Adcote is a full termly boarding school, with a happy mixture of British girls and students from other countries.

We offer full and weekly boarding in a safe, caring, friendly and disciplined environment in a school where privacy and independence are respected, and where the girls can enjoy companionship, fun and a lively programme of boarding activities.

Recent years have seen an increase in the popularity and demand for boarding places. As part of an on-going School plan for investment and regeneration, we are expanding and significantly upgrading our boarding facilities.

We find that most girls enjoy sharing a room. The Head Matron and her team provide the care, comfort and support which are so important for the girls’ well-being and success, nurturing and guiding the youngest boarder through to the maturity of

the Sixth Form student. We have a strong sense of both family and traditional values in the Boarding House. By encouraging self-discipline and a sense of responsibility, we seek to promote self-confidence and assurance without arrogance.

Girls are welcome to stay in the boarding house for occasional nights. Casual boarding responds to the occasional need such as involvement in a school drama production, a birthday celebration, or for when parents need to be away from
