The Māori name for Auckland is Tamaki Makau Rau, which means ‘city of many lovers’. And it’s true – we love Auckland and we are sure you will too!

Did you know?Auckland is New Zealand’s biggest city – around one third of the population lives here, about 1.4 million people. It’s also the largest Polynesian city in the world.

According to Mercer Quality of Living survey, Auckland is currently ranked as the third best city to live in the world!

Auckland’s major businesses include information and computer technology, biotechnology and the creative industries. Health, construction, viticulture and food manufacturing are also important.

Auckland is often called the city of sails because the harbour is full of hundreds of yachts. In fact, there are more yachts per person than any other city in the world.

At 328 metres high, Auckland’s iconic Sky Tower is the tallest building in New Zealand.

From your study to employment opportunitiesChoosing what to studyIt’s important to think carefully about the programme you want to study because this will determine your career for a few years after you graduate. Choosing a subject you are interested in is usually a good start.

At Unitec you can build a study programme to suit you. This means starting your studies at the right level and then progressing to more advanced programmes as you need to. You will be taught by lecturers who are experts in their field and have excellent connections in their industry.

Many Unitec programmes include a work placement, which can give you a competitive advantage when you start applying for jobs.

Our graduates find jobs Many of our graduates find employment in Auckland or other parts of New Zealand because employers are always looking for the combination of theory and practical skills that you gain at Unitec.

Others choose to settle in other countries, as your qualification will be internationally recognised. The practical experience you will bring to the workplace will be invaluable, no matter where in the world you go.

Variation to Work VisaDuring your studies, if you are eligible to work 20 hours per week, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) will include this condition on your Student Visa. This allows you to work part-time during the academic year (February to December). You are then able to apply for a further Variation to Work Visa, which allows you to work full-time during the summer holidays (December to February). Graduate Job Search Visa (GJS)Once you have completed your studies and if you are eligible, you can apply for the GJS visa.

Inland Revenue Department (IRD)You must apply to the IRD for a tax number. This is the number you give to your employer and your bank so that you are not paying the highest rate of tax on your earnings. Visit www.ird.govt.nz for more information.

Part-time jobs There are all sorts of part-time jobs in Auckland throughout the year including hospitality, office work and retail. Some part-time jobs may continue throughout the semester, some may just be for a few days. Your accommodation on or off campus

On campusIf you want the buzz and security of living on campus, Unitec has a range of accommodation available. The options range from a studio to five-bedroom apartments which are all self-catered. Each apartment (except for the studio) has a separate bedroom, lounge, bathroom (or two) and a well-equipped kitchen. Your furnished bedroom has a comfortable bed, some storage, space to study and a connection for a phone and computer (please note that if you require a fast broadband connection, then that is your responsibility). There is parking available and also an on-site laundry. You can choose to stay for a semester or a year.

Unitec Residential Village – Great North Road

This complex contains 34 self-contained, fully-furnished apartments. The indicative rent is based on one person/per bedroom/per week:

Meet and greetUnitec offers a friendly pick-up service from Auckland airport (homestay students excluded) for a fee of NZD 65. If you want to be met at the airport on arrival, please fill in the form at least five days before you arrive in Auckland. You can find the form online www.international.unitec.ac.nz > pre-departure.

Off campus – stay with a homestay familyLiving in homestay is a great way to practise your English language skills and experience Kiwi life. All homestay students have their own room and are provided with two meals a day during the week and three meals a day at the weekends. The cost is NZD 250 per week, plus a placement fee of NZD 220 and an airport pick-up fee of NZD 80.

The theory, your knowledgeRegardless of the programme you choose, your theoretical knowledge is an integral part of your learning process. You will attend lectures, tutorials, workshops and also participate in the classroom.

Your practicePractical knowledge goes hand-in-hand with theoretical knowledge so that's why you do both here. Industry-based learning is part of the curriculum across the Unitec programmes, which allows you to put into practice what you have learnt in the classroom.

This means when you step out into the workforce or further study, you have the knowledge and experience to succeed.

Your programme, your experienceAccounting and finance, and management and marketing students take part in Industry Based Learning, a work placement in an actual business organisation.

Bachelor of Computing Systems students complete a semester-long work project for an organisation of their choice.

Bachelor of Construction students are encouraged to work in the construction industry in the last two years of their degree.

Boatbuilding students create a variety of project boats. In 2011, one of them, Karma Police, successfully held its own against much larger boats in the Round the North Island Race.

Design and visual arts students can display their work at the on-campus galleries and at the end-of-year Grad Show. This is great exposure which often leads to commercial offers for their work.

Early childhood education students work in an early childhood education centre throughout their studies.

Landscape students work on designs for real sites with real clients, contributing to the development of public and private spaces.

Natural science students develop their skills through placements at the Department of Conservation, MAF Biosecurity, the SPCA or the Auckland Zoo.

Performing and screen arts students perform in front of a live audience at our on-campus theatre and work together to create numerous short films throughout the year.

Sport students take part in work placements in a variety of sport and fitness orgnisations. They also develop their skills in the Human Performance Lab, a sports science lab also used by upcoming athletes.

Veterinary nursing students work on real cases at the Unitec Veterinary Clinic and the country's first dedicated Veterinary Specialist Group Hospital, located at our Mt Albert campus.

Statement of Purpose (SOP)

The SOP is a summary of your future plans, career goals/desires, interests for study etc. The purpose of an SOP is to help us check what you want to learn and whether the programme provides this, whether the programme will prepare you for the type of career you’re looking for, and which elective courses would be most suitable so that you take the topics of interest to you. Therefore an SoP should:> Be 1-2 pages (short and detailed is better than long and vague)> Introduce you and why you want to apply for the programme > Tell us about your specific interests in the field you’ve chosen> Give us some idea of your career goals and plans for the future> Tell us what you want to learn or hope to get out of the programme to prepare you for those plans.An SoP should NoT:> Include a copy of the CV/work or study history in detail> Rely on vague, obvious plans such as “I want to improve my skills in computing”> Be a copy or summary of promotional material from Unitec about our services/facilities/

Guidelines for Credit recognition / Cross-creditsPlease note:

The maximum credits ever granted is half a programme, but the actual credits granted will vary according to individual assessment, as credits are based on how similar your previous courses are to Unitec’s courses.

If you want to apply for cross-credits, you need to:

» Obtain detailed course descriptions (in English) from the previous institution you studied at

» Complete the Application for Credit Recognition/Cross-credits (online or in the International Prospectus)

» Please apply for credits at least two months before the semester begins; do not leave it too late as the process can take 2-3 months, and credits approved more than two weeks after the semester begins will not affect your enrolment (ie you will not be able to withdraw from the courses or apply for a refund due to the credits). Credit applications received less than two months before the semester begins may not be assessed in time, and applications received less than one month in advance will not be assessed in time.

Note: If the previous qualification is from New Zealand – Please take these items to any Student Central office on campus. (If you are in your final semester, bring your results so far, plus confirmation of the courses you are currently enrolled in. Provisional assessment can be made on this basis; your final results will be required to confirm any credits provisionally granted.)
