TAKING CHANCES

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK:

TAKING A CHANCE If you’re a person who is willing to take chances, to take risks, then ‘society’ as we know it seems to approve. Three (3) years ago, I took a chance in renewing my commitment to send out a Newsletter. Three years! Response has been great, and I have received a few business opportunities through this media. I’ve also helped other persons get started with their businesses through advertising. As we enter the month of September, it’s a season of new beginnings – new changes – new challenges. Some kids will be going to kindergarten for the first time. Some older children will be going to High School and

College for the first time — making new friends and getting acquainted with new surroundings. On the other side of the coin, a whole flock of new graduates will be looking for ways to enter the workforce. Another large group – the ‘Baby Boomers’ will be moving into retirement. Now, let us look at “Retirement”: To some — retirement will be a welcome

relief from the stresses of the working world;

To others — it will be an ‘open door’ to a possible new career!

As we move from Summer to Fall, many doors will be open. But how many retirees will make use of those open doors? You have to accept challenges; you have to take risks. Rising to new challenges usually involves a lot of listening — not only to those around us, but to our inner selves. If you have a challenge — perhaps a plan for your own business, or for going back to school – whatever it is, listen to the creative force inside you and when you think it’s time: ‘GO FOR IT’.

INTERVIEW WITH PERSONALITY OF THE

MONTH… My personality for this issue is another gentleman.

This time it is Mark Collins. I’ve been associated

with Mark now for approximately four (4) years. He

is the force behind the Bus Trips that have been

organized by the Ladies Ministry of Kipling Avenue

Baptist Church and the Caribbean Seniors Social

Club of Toronto of which I’m the Vice President. I

hope that you will enjoy Mark’s interview.

Mark D. Collins, CTIS

Cross Canada Travel www.crosscanadatravel.com

ADC: Hello Mark, and thanks for agreeing to do

this interview with us. MC: No problem. THANK YOU for

inviting me to do this. ADC: As I usually start my interviews… Can you

tell us a little about yourself? MC: I grew up in Hamilton in a large family

(1 brother, 2 sisters), and spent the first 19 years of my life living at home on the East Mountain. I left Hamilton after graduating high school and went to Algonquin College in Ottawa. I met my future wife at school and now we live in the Kitchener-Waterloo area with our two children.

ADC: How did you become involved in the Tourism

business and do you find it rewarding? MC: I majored in Business Marketing but

never imagined myself working in the Travel/Tourism Industry. After graduating from Algonquin College I started to work for a property

management company based out of Kingston but with properties throughout Ontario and BC. After a couple of months in Operations, I transferred over to the Corporate Sales & Marketing Department and, in turn, started to represent/sell the properties on the hotel side of the business. This was my first real opportunity/taste of the tourism sector. As I started to develop my career, I became quite fond of that sector and built a lot of great professional relationships over the years. I love to travel, and I strongly believe that traveling is the best education in the world. Now I have worked in the travel/tourism industry for almost 15 years, and would not give it up for anything.

ADC: What are your dreams and aspirations for the

future? MC: I have dreams to continue to travel

and see the world, but I would also like to own my own business someday.

ADC: What hobbies and interests do you have

outside of Swiftrans? MC: As I mentioned above, I have a wife

and two children so I love to spend time with them. I love to travel, and I am also an avid sports fan. I play golf, tennis and volleyball in my spare time.

ADC: Thanks Mark and we at ADC Professional

Services would like to wish you and your family all the very best.

MC: THANK YOU. I wish the same for

both you, and your readers.

Ode to Self-Empowerment In the July/August issue I did two items on self-empowerment, and promised a continuation. Here it is... What teaches me all lessons?

- MY MISTAKES What lift’s my head high?

- MY PRIDE, MY ARROGANCE What if I can’t go on?

- NOT AN OPTION What makes me victorious?

- MY COURAGE TO CLIMB What makes me competent?

- MY CONFIDENCE

What makes me beautiful? - MY LOVE OF GOD.

Letting Go

LET GO OF THE PAST!

It’s easy to dwell on the past, especially when the future is so unknown.

Looking to the past can feel safe … we know what has happened and we know what we could do to change things … if only we had the chance.

The truth is, though, that you never will have the chance to change the past — not unless scientists finally invent a time machine! LET GO OF THE DESIRE TO GOSSIP!

I’ve heard it said that gossip is just a cheap way to make yourself feel good, and I have to agree.

We all know that gossiping about other people is ----well, not so good! But when the people around you are doing it, it can be easy to slip into doing it too.

Consider though that the quality of your life depends on the quality of the conversations you have.

This eye-opening poem from an

unknown author says a lot about the damage done through gossip:

My name is Gossip. I have no respect for justice.

I maim without killing. I break hearts and ruin lives. I am cunning and malicious and gather strength with age.

The more I am quoted the more I am believed. I flourish at every level of society. My victims are helpless. They cannot protect themselves against me because I have no name and no face.

To track me down is impossible. The harder you try, the more elusive I become. I am nobody's friend. Once I tarnish a reputation, it is never the same. I topple governments and ruin marriages. I ruin careers and cause sleepless nights, heartache and indigestion. I spawn suspicion and generate grief.

I make innocent people cry in their pillows. Even my name hisses.

I AM CALLED GOSSIP.

A Few Amazingly Achievable Things to Do

1. AVOID NEEDLESS DRAMA AND

THOSE WHO CREATE IT

Never create unnecessary drama, and don’t surround yourself with those who do. Choose to spend time with people who you are proud to know, people you admire, who love and respect you – people who make your day a little brighter simply by being in it. Don’t walk away from negative people! RUN! Life is too short to spend time with folks who suck the happiness out of you.

2. FOLLOW YOUR INTUITION

WHEN MAKING DECISIONS:

Following your intuition means doing what feels right, even if it doesn’t look or sound right to others. Only time will tell, but our human instincts are rarely ever wrong. So don’t worry about what everyone else thinks, and keep living and speaking the truth. The only people that will get mad at you for doing so are those who are set on living a lie.

3. SPEND TIME WORKING ON

SOMETHING YOU BELIEVE IN:

Never put off or give up on a goal that’s important to you. Not because you still have tomorrow to start or try again, but because you may not have tomorrow at all. Life is shorter than it sometimes seems. FOLLOW YOUR HEART TODAY!
