“Everyone has the opportunity to become an

artist. To learn and to teach and to pass their

knowledge down to the new generation of young

I want the young people to have the inspirations,

CEO’s Message

The role of a creative leader is not to have all the ideas; it’s to create a culture where everyone can have ideas and feel that they’re valued - Ken Robinson

Over nearly 55 years we have built Australian Design Centre into a platform of creative ideas for a broad and diverse audience, inspiring audiences to not only value and appreciate creativity but to have a go themselves and channel their own creativity to lead their best lives. Craft, design, art, architecture are the stuff of inspiration and so integral to culture. The ADC team and all of our collaborators have worked extraordinarily hard in 2018 to deliver the very best program. Much of what we have produced through the year has a strong strategic intent seeding projects for the future. Across our three gallery spaces in Darlinghurst we presented 17 exhibitions and over 100 events and that’s before we start talking festivals! The year began with our major ADC on Tour exhibition project, Obsessed: Compelled to make. For this project we researched why making is important to us, how we make, what motivates us to make and why more of us are making than ever before. We arrived at the notion of obsession and how that dogged determination, focus, passion and skill all come together in a compulsion to test and torture materials, invent new processes, suffer the turmoil of failure and enjoy the elation of success – a compulsion to make. Obsessed focussed on makers from across the spectrum of making – textiles, ceramics, furniture, metalwork, jewellery, conceptual art, glass blowing and sculptural weaving.

We were delighted that the Obsessed film about Liz Williamson was accepted into the UK Crafts Council Real to Reel Film Festival and shown in London in May.

Porosity Kabari, presented in April, gave us a unique perspective on how another culture values reuse of discarded materials and craft skills through the eyes of three designers working alongside the makers of Mumbai. In May we were privileged to work with the Taiwan External Trade Development Council to present the work of 17 exhibitors, designers and brands. The exhibition demonstrated the value of design in reinventing Taiwanese culture on a global stage. For the first time, in partnership with the team at Workshopped we presented the eighteenth annual exhibition WORKSHOPPED18, the latest in furniture, lighting and objects by more than 40 Australian designers.

In August our focus shifted to the urban environment with the exceptionally popular exhibition Urban Decay: Sydney miniatures presenting Joshua Smith’s unique take on the overlooked corners of the urban environment, celebrating the beauty in the grime, decay and graffiti. I’m so delighted that two of the major Sydney miniature buildings and the accompanying films were acquired by the City of Sydney for the civic art collection.

We create exhibitions for presentation in Sydney and for tour around Australia and we also present incoming touring exhibitions from other organisations. In October Sydney had the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent In these HANDS: mara nyanganka: Celebrating 70 years of Ernabella Arts curated by Sturt Gallery and Ernabella Arts. An extraordinary collaboration and story that has resulted in the vibrant and highly successful contribution to Australian art from the artists in Ernabella. The year ended with the third iteration of our UNSW Art and Design graduating designers’ exhibition Designing Bright Futures. Twelve new creatives launching their careers in this public exhibition platform – a very impressive cohort of fresh ideas.

Our Gallery Two exhibitions were equally rewarding. Future Artefacts was a superb collaboration between designers Alexi Freeman, Tessa Blazey and photographer Jane Burton. Interpretations V: Paper (Cellulose) was a collection of diverse responses to working with paper. Painting with Thread presented two of the excellent tapestries by Australian Tapestry Workshop weavers of the work of Guan Wei and Sangeeta Sandrasegar. In our window gallery Object Space we presented design for living well (Tasman Munro) and beautiful textiles by Vita Cochran and Dorothy Filshie. Three exhibitions in Object Space were curated by our First Nations Creative Producers: Euphemia Bostock (curated by Lucy Simpson); Esme Timbery (curated by Dennis Golding) and also by Dennis Golding a self curated exhibition of his graduating work in textiles and photography.

ADC on Tour presented 15 openings across Australia of our touring exhibitions, including Living Treasures: Masters of Australian Craft – Lola Greeno: Cultural Jewels as it drew to a close a highly successful 18 venue tour over four years.

ADC on Tour is made possible by generous Federal Government support through the Visions of Australia program, the Australia Council for the Arts and the exceptionally fine regional galleries across Australia. We also thank the Gordon Darling Foundation for their generous contributions to the publications that accompany our touring exhibitions.

Our retail space, Object Shop, has gone from strength to strength becoming a shopping destination for unique, collectible, high quality handmade work by over 100 Australian makers. Sales for 2018 were 28 per cent higher than in 2017. Bi-annual outdoor makers markets in March (for Sydney Design Festival) and in October (for Sydney Craft Week) gave opportunities for more makers to connect with the buyers market.

Sydney Craft Week Festival produced by ADC for the second year was a huge success. I would like to thank my co-festival director Penny Craswell and the SCW team and each and every one of the participants and partners for helping to make this festival a much-anticipated event in the Sydney cultural calendar. The City of Sydney supported us with festivals funding giving a great boost to our budget for this year’s festival.

We leveraged the core financial support we receive annually from a range of sources into success in $124,790 worth of project grants with an additional $156,514 for projects commencing in 2019.

Globally, I had the privilege of attending the International Council of Design Special Meeting in Beijing in September and our partnerships manager Alix Fiveash attended the Sichuan Traditional Crafts and Design Exhibition and Forum in Chengdu in November. These opportunities are seeding new connections and possible future projects.

A big thanks from all of us at ADC to our creative collaborators, funding partners, corporate partners, donors and audiences for your support in 2018. Thank you to our Board members who volunteer their time and expertise to govern and support our work.

I’m immensely proud of what our small team has achieved and excited about what the future holds for us as an organisation and for the future of a creative Australia. In the words of Tjunkaya Tapaya, who we were honoured to meet and work with this year (from her film for Obsessed: Compelled to make),

“Everyone has the opportunity to become an artist. To learn and to teach and to pass their knowledge down to the new generation of young people.

I want the young people to have the inspirations, work skills and opportunities that I have had. I am not looking back but forward to a bright and positive future, I see good things ahead!”

Chair’s Message

Australian Design Centre is a key contributor to growing Australia’s creative economy. Our vision is to lead the development of robust platforms that ignite creativity and ideas in the best of craft and design. Through our exhibition, touring and learning programs ADC brings the power of making to new audiences and inspires us to use design to transform our lives. At the same time, we are nurturing and helping artists develop their full potential. On behalf of the ADC Board I am proud to report a year that has seen recognition and support for our work continue to grow. In 2018 alone we worked with over 500 creative practitioners and enabled over 200,000 people to experience craft and design excellence. This was only possible by the dedication, agility and innovative approach of our small team, led by Lisa Cahill . The Board thank our staff, creative collaborators, partners, donors, volunteers and audiences who made 2018 a great year in Australian contemporary craft and design. The Board and staff look forward to sharing another year of exciting creative programs and generating more support to amplify and grow ADC’s mission.

Australian Design Honours

The Australian Design Honours program was launched in 2015 to recognise the leading lights of designers, thinkers, and makers. The program is dedicated to promoting and advocating for Australian contemporary craft and design on the world stage. There are currently 122 individuals in the Australian Design Honours program and we plan to grow this over time to demonstrate the breadth of talent and contribution.

In 2018, ADC has honoured eleven outstanding individuals for their achievements in the design sector. They are: David Clark, Sacha Coles, Emma Elizabeth, Ross Harley, Mark Harrison, Trent Jansen, Karen McCartney, Dolla Merrillees, Kate Stokes, and the team from Workshopped Raymond Scott and Leanne Gibson.

Obsessed: Compelled to make2 February - 29 March 2018Gallery I

Obsessed: Compelled to make presented the work of 14 artists from across Australia, delving beyond the finished object, beyond the personality of the maker, into the fundamental conceptual framework of their creations. We looked at the complexities of their materials and processes, the realities of their day-to-day studio routine and unravelled what compelled each maker to create over the course of their personal career – why this technique or material? Why that concept? How does the mind of a maker work?

Made from materials and craftsmanship sourced solely from the ‘Chor Bazaar’ (thieves market) and ‘Kabari Bazaars’ (junk markets) in Mumbai, India, the works in this exhibition were the result of an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, collaborative project by Australian object designer Trent Jansen, Australian artist/architect Richard Goodwin and Indian design thinker Ishan Khosla.

For this project, Trent Jansen explored the Indian notion of ‘jugaad’ - doing just enough with what you have on hand and figuring it out as you go.

Goodwin’s practice as an artist/architect, explores Duchamp’s revelation of the ‘readymade’, as fundamental to his post functionalist theory and practice. How can something be something else?

Ishan Khosla’s collection of furniture is made from scavenged pieces of wood sourced from found objects from the streets of Mumbai, put together in an ad hoc manner

Porosity Kabari was presented by Mumbai’s Studio X in February 2016 and by Hotel Hotel’s Nishi Gallery in June/July 2017.

Let’s Tea Party: Taiwan Design Now31 May - 13 June 2018

Let’s Tea Party: Taiwan Design Now brought together the work of 17 exhibitors, designers and brands in a showcase of Taiwanese design.

Designs on display, from fashion to electronics, kitchenware to bicycles, show how Taiwan has shifted from a post-war manufacturing powerhouse to a design-led culture producing original, high-value products. Taiwan’s history of excellence in manufacturing makes it a leader in new tech, such as VR, AI and robotics, as well as cutting-edge materials, cradle-to-cradle processes and a range of other industrial design innovations.

The project offered an unprecedented opportunity for Australian and Taiwanese design cultures to learn from each other and exchange ideas.

Organised by Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and led by Australian curator Annie Ivanova, this exhibition presented the value of design in reinventing Taiwanese culture on a global stage.

The event also featured a full colour catalogue, Vivid Live event Design and Tea Culture: Taiwan and Australia as well as a successful Trade day to promote design and manufacture.

In These HANDS: mara nyangangka5 October - 14 November 2018

ADC presented the Sturt Gallery and Ernabella Arts exhibition In These HANDS: mara nyangangka, an exhibition of new paintings, ceramics, tjanpi weavings and punu from the artists of Ernabella, celebrating 70 years of Ernabella Arts.

The fruits of a partnership between Australia’s two oldest centres for craft and design – Sturt Gallery & Studios (1941) and Ernabella Arts (1948), were the subjects of this exhibition. In the late 1960s, Elisabeth Nagel, who led the Sturt Weaving Studio for 50 years, made visits to Ernabella in far north South Australia with a desire to share knowledge of her craft. Subsequently, five young artists from Ernabella went to Sturt as part of a residency to learn new weaving techniques. The exhibition tells the story of that residency, its impact on the generations that followed, and offers a showcase of the contemporary work of senior artists including Pepai Jangala Carroll, Rupert Jack, Tjunkaya Tapaya and Alison Milyika Carroll alongside emerging Indigenous artists.

This exhibition was part of 2018’s Sydney Craft Week launch and also included an in conversation with Curator, Slavica Zivkovic discussing the artists, their practices, and the history of Ernabella Arts.

Sydney Craft Week Festival

Sydney Craft Week is an inspirational festival that speaks to our fundamental human urge to make, while also showcasing exceptional contemporary craft. Sydney Craft Week unites the very active craft sector within Sydney’s cre-ative community - including ceramicists, jewellers, quilters, knitters and other textile artists, plus timber workers, print makers, leather crafters, Indigenous makers and creatives of all kinds who work with their hands.

2018 was the second year of the festival. This year was was bigger than ever, with 89 venues across 48 suburbs, including:

• 109 workshops, • 47 exhibitions and • 200+ events total.

An initiative of the Australian Design Centre, and supported by a City of Sydney Festivals Grant, this year’s festival was

jam-packed with events for everyone, including exhibitions, talks, workshops, retail events (including markets), open studios and live demonstrations.

This year’s theme, ‘mindful making’, explored how working with your hands offered opportunities to focus, connect, relax and create. We also focused on how makers approach their craft by applying a thoughtful and considered approach to the sustainable use of materials, innovative processes and an understanding of com-munity needs.

Sydney Craft Week was opened on Friday 5 October at the Australian Design Centre by NSW Arts Minister the Hon Don Harwin in conjunction with two exhibitions at ADC, In These HANDS: mara nyangangka and Seed Stitch Contemporary Textile Awards. This year, Karen McCartney was ourAmbassador, promoting Sydney Craft Week as a design-led event.

Object Shop and Retail Events

ADC’s retail space Object Shop has cemented itself as a visitor destination, and a place to find quality local craft and design for the home. By the end of 2018, the store had grown to support over 100 makers with increased floor space being been permanently dedicat-ed to retail. Retail sales were up 28% from 2017 to 2018.

ADC was able to support a number of Object Shop makers leading their own workshops and product launches in store, in addition to hosting regular Saturday Meet the Maker sessions. These activations allowed our audience to engage directly with creatives.

In August, Object Shop launched an online retail platform, premiering a selection of mak-er products and ADC catalogues and Object publications.

At Christmas, Object Shop extended trading hours and hosted a VIP Christmas Shopping Night, which allowed us to capture new audiences and increase revenue. We had four Object Shop makers donate products to a Christmas raffle prize, which was a great success and supported ADCs fundraising drive.

ADC held two major outdoor markets, during both the Sydney Design Festival and Sydney Craft Week. Held under a marquee in the ADC forecourt and Palmer Street, each market event attracted 20 curated stalls, and over 3000 attendees. Additionally, ADC partnered again with Sydney Living Museums to curate a Makers Lane featuring ten Object Shop creatives in their Christmas Fare market at the historic Hyde Park Barracks. These market events allow ADC and Object to support a community of makers beyond the store itself and are our most popular events.

ADC on Tour

Touring has been central to our work since 1965. Since the 1970’s ADC has toured nationally and been at the forefront of providing regional Australia with access to cutting edge work and ideas.

We work closely and regularly with regional galleries to deliver exhibition programs that increase access to cultural content & creative learning across the country. Our touring reach is unprecedented in the sector – since 2005 more than 1.2 million people at 64 different national arts organisations have experienced our 28 touring exhibitions across all states and territories. Since 2005, more than 50% of touring venues have been regionally based.

Presenting our exhibitions, education and public program events, research and digital content across the country is just one of the many ways we actively nurture innovation in making and development of new audiences for craft, art and design in Australia.

In 2018 our touring program presented the work of 58 artists across five exhibitions at 13 venues nationally with a national regional audience of over 95,600 people.

In 2018 Clay Intersections commenced its NSW tour and Shapeshifters: 3D Printing the Future finished its successful three year tour.

Preparations also started for two new tours of the exhibitions Living Treasures: Masters of Australian Craft | Prue Venables and Made/Worn: Contemporary Australian Jewellery.

Events and Learning

In 2018, ADC hosted over 25 private events ranging from theatre season launches, corporate Christmas parties, offsite planning sessions and artist workshops.

We hosted community events in collaboration with our partners Mama Creatives, Authentic Design Alliance and City of Sydney.

With the technical assistance of our friends at MAAS, ADC’s mixing desk is now able to record events and talks in the gallery and staff trained in its use, allowing conversations to be shared to a larger audience online and for archiving.

ADC held school holiday workshops for 3D printing during April and October. The workshops led by education partner MODFAB were sold out with positive feedback from families wanting more creative technology-based workshops for primary school aged children.

There were many school visits to the Centre across the year. ADC hosted a series of workshops held over three days with STEAMpop and Ascham Year 7 students. This interactive series of workshops included talks and tours with a selection of the Designing Bright Futures student exhibitors. The designers who attended, captivated and engaged the students fully with a tour of the exhibition, a talk and planned design thinking activi-ties.

Two new education kits were developed through the year to support ADC On Tour exhibitions Clay Intersections and Obsessed: Compelled to make.

Object Platform

ADC launched Object Platform in 2018. Object Platform is a place that exists in the digital sphere to experiment, prototype new thinking, spark physical provocations and commis-sion new content. It brings the ADC’s thinking beyond its four walls – beyond the exhibi-tions, events and objects – through long-form articles, research papers, online exhibi-tion, webinars and live interviews, as well as conference presentations, lectures, panels, forums, films, audio tours and a writer-in-residence program.

This program is part of ADC’s ongoing research into object, furniture, lighting andindustrial design, fashion design, architecture, crafts, ceramics, jewellery, textile arts, glass, timber and mixed media.

Digital Programs

ADC extended it reach beyond the gallery walls by developing and delivering a range of digital programs in 2018.

Object Shop OnlineObject Shop sells the work of over 97 local makers and designers is located within the Centre. In August 2018, ADC launched Object Shop Online with a small sample of the shop’s collection featuring handmade and designed ceramics, jewellery, textiles, home-wares and publications. We aim to grow this online opportunity in the next year.

ADC websiteThe ADC website has grown to host our exhibition, film, audio, essays and information about our exhibitions and events. Work has been done to add archival information, room sheets, and artist statements from previous exhibition along with adding depth to the Living Treasures: Masters of Australian Craft exhibition program websites.

FilmsThe major ADC On Tour exhibition Obsessed: Compelled to make is accompanied by a series of 14 films. The films are included as part of the exhibition and available on ADC’s vimeo and linked to the exhibition pages.

Sydney Craft Week In the second year of Sydney Craft Week, ADC refined the website to assist audiences with sorting and refining their craft related interests. For SCW 2018, more than 200 indi-vidual events were listed on the website as well as 26 news stories published reaching an online audience of more than 140,000 people.

Social Media ADC’s social media outreach grew across the year, ADC’s Instagram curated account reach our goal of over 10,000 followers. Facebook events for ADC’s Makers Markets reached 92,000. Twitter remained steady with 7500+ followers.

Research and Development

With the generous support of the Federal Government’s Visions of Australia program ($39,000), we were excited to announce the next chapter in our series of exhibitions showcasing new work by established craftspeople, Living Treasures: Masters of Australian Craft. The next Living Treasure will be ceramicist Prue Venables.

An Australia Council for the Arts, Contemporary Touring Initiative grant was awarded to ADC to develop a national contemporary jewellery exhibition. A panel of sector experts, Kevin Murray, Melinda Young and Margaret Hancock Davis worked with ADC on this project for potential tour from 2020.

Work began on a robust forward program for the period 2020 - 2024 as ADC prepares to submit applications for multi-year funding to Government bodies.

Creative Program 2019

In 2019 we present 16 exhibitions and 100+ events in Sydney, 15 ADC on Tour exhibition openings across Australia and 200+ festival events happening city-wide for Sydney Craft Week. Our program presents outstanding work across a range of disciplines including Indigenous practice, architecture, art, design, jewellery, ceramics, furniture, metalwork, graphics, digital design, sculpture and fashion. Many of these exhibitions are collaborations with one or more organisations, while others are curated directly with individual artists, makers and designers.

Our headline exhibition this year is the ninth instalment of the series Living Treasures: Masters of Australian Craft. This new exhibition showcases the work of acclaimed ceramicist Prue Venables. The project includes a documentary film and book and the exhibition at ADC will be followed by a four-year tour to 13 regional galleries.

We will also present design and craft through Object Shop, our digital publishing and communications channels including Object Platform, learning activities and engagement, and through Sydney Craft Week, our city-wide festival of making that will be back stronger than ever in its third year.

Island Welcome

1 February - 3 April

11 April - 5 June

STEEL: art design architecture explores innovative ways that steel is being used by artists, designers and architects. The exhibitors represent a broad range of approaches to working with steel - from fine, hand-crafted jewellery to high-tech research facilities.

Island Welcome is a group exhibition exploring contemporary jewellery as a gesture of greeting. Inspired by the welcome garland found in many traditional island cultures, the artists have each made a neckpiece interpreting the theme of ‘welcome’ in response of current Australian immigration and refugee policy.

The Teapot Project11 April - 5 June

The Teapot Project is a collaborative project between Australian-based German silversmith Hendrik Forster and Korean-born, Sydney-based object maker and designer Kenny Son. The project explores the social, cultural and historical context surrounding the production and use of the teapot.
