It seems every time you turn on the television, some program shows you the power of technology as it relates to fighting crime. We live in a world of information that can be processed and passed almost at the speed of light, yet it is easy to relegate this to the realm of superpowers—high-tech crime fighters helping others within a fictional realm. However, right here, in Ada, Oklahoma, we have just that—dedicated professionals who use their powers of insight, empathy, and technology to battle the forces of destruction. What might make this even more powerful is that these forces are not used to help just anyone; they help children—those who need us most.

The many professionals who work at the Care Cottage Child Advocacy Center seem to see it as a calling more than a job. They strive to help the children that have been abused, and do so in a friendly, non-threatening manner. In the past, when it was suspected that a child had been abused, they would have to visit various places separately such as hospitals, police stations, counselors, and child welfare workers, among many others. The child would be dealing with intense emotional anguish, yet still have to jump through the beauracratic hoops that send most adults into a tizzy. With the advent of

the Care Cottage in 2003, though, the child’s plight was made demonstrably less. Instead of going to many different places, the child only need go to the Care Cottage, where everything can be taken care of in a single, safe, comforting place. And don’t we want their experience to be as trauma free as can be possible?

Technology plays a large part in the process. When you walk into the interviewing room, you get the feel of a friendly classroom. A table stands in the center, and art supplies are available. However, cameras fill the room, though unnoticeable, getting every angle of the child, including a view from above so those in the observation room can see what the child may be drawing. This allows for unobtrusive examination of the child’s psyche. When they are taken into the physical examination room, the child is confronted with a fantastical jungle. The décor seems to be something out of a child’s dream. They would never imagine that everything is being recorded.

Since everything is closely and carefully documented, the chances of convicting an offender are greatly increased. Most cases don’t even go to trial because the evidence is so overwhelming. Because of the technological advantages, the child can get the care that they need and have justice within a safe and secure

environment. Through this technology, though, other things are possible. They can help those in other states, leading to convictions while helping children. They are also able to stay well informed, trained, and regulated through training and review. The team, which encompasses every aspect of child abuse, is well trained in telemedicine and telecommunications. Once a month there are national standard forensic interview and medical peer reviews. This helps them to further hone their skills and become better at what they do—helping children through a difficult and traumatic time.

Even though this non-profit organization does receive some money from the government, more is always needed. If you want to help, they are always looking for people to actively participate in fundraising committees. Or, if your time is limited, you can always donate those things that can mean so much to a child—pillows, blankets, teddy bears. A big, white smile develops at a young age. The most important part of dental health is early education and the resources to access oral hygiene. Families need a place that is friendly for the kids and the rest of the family.

Ada Family Dentistry was founded two years ago. Dr. Bryan Bratton opened his own practice with the help of his wife, Courtney. Together, they rented out the large Monte Vista office space for his wife’s optometry business, Ada Vision. The building she picked conveniently had space intended for more than one office on both sides. They decided that the side-by-side area would be the perfect location for Bryan to open shop.

Bratton began his descent into the dental field at Northeastern State University. At NSU he met his wife, and received a degree in organismic

biology with a minor in psychology. He followed up his bachelor’s degree with a DDS from the University of Oklahoma. During his time as a dentist, he has worked for the Cherokee Nation for 3 years, and even Chickasaw Nation before that. He has now settled his permanent, private office in Ada.

Part of his inspiration to enter the field was to follow in his father’s footsteps. Bratton’s father has a dental practice based in Owasso. His wife, to whom he’s now been married to for nine years, shares more than a building with her husband. Now they have three happy children together.

His children aren’t the only younger people you might see around the office. Dr. Bratton says that his office has an affinity for treating children. Ada Family Dentistry is accessible to the whole family, functional, and

especially child-focused. He says that dental facilities have no problem treating children, but more often than not they don’t have a primary child-focused environment. “Our specialty is children.”

Most of the work in the office is down to earth. No spectacularly new techniques are being experimented with, and it hasn’t been around the longest out of all the dental stops. Nevertheless, this new business should be on your eye when looking for a family dentist. “I can’t begin to thank the Chickasaw Nation enough,” Isom said. “For them to do that -- when nobody says they have to do that -- was a huge blessing for me and for my family.

“There were so many soldiers overseas with me who, when it started getting close to the time for us all to come home, had to start looking for jobs again because they weren’t going to have the same one when they got home.

‘But the entire time I was preparing to ship out, and the entire time I was overseas, the Chickasaw Nation helped my family be assured that I would still have a job and we would still have income and benefits when I got home. That is a HUGE blessing,” he said.

Another “bonus” Isom said he had going for him during his deployment was his faith in God and the undying support of his church family.

“It’s during times like that, hardships and times of struggle, that you have to put your faith in things bigger than you,” Isom said. “You can’t control the war, and you can’t control when you come home or how long you’ll be away. You can’t control what’s happening with the family back home, so you have to turn it over to God and let Him have it and trust that He’ll know what to do and that He’ll do what’s best.

“That’s not always easy to do, but thanks to the faith of my wife and family and the support of our church here at home, I was able to do that,” Isom said.

Isom said church members put together a send-off celebration and maintained a constant contact with his family here at

home -- and with him -- all through his deployment. Having that support, he said, helped keep his spirits up despite the thousands of miles that separated him from those closest to him.

“It lifted my spirits every day and gave me even more things to be thankful for in those hours of prayer that kept me strong while I was gone,” Isom said.

“It was still a long, hard time being away from my wife and my babies for two years, but having the comfort of knowing my job would be waiting and having a church that helped support and look after my family every day made things much better than they would have been otherwise.”. ■

Chaz Isom spent a lot of time away from home the past two years and missed some truly precious moments while he was gone.

Isom, 47, has been a member of the U.S. Navy Reserves since 1997, but was never called to active duty until December of 2009. At the time Isom’s unit shipped out, he and his wife Kelley (formerly Kelley Allison) had a 5-year-old son and a brand new little girl who was less than six months old.

Over the next 23 months, Isom kept in touch via computer and telephone while serving with the U.S. forces at a Marins Corps base in Afghanistan. He landed back in the states and made his way back to Ada just before Thanksgiving last year. Back home, Isom was reunited with his wife and children -- Jonathon, who had turned 6, and Marin, who was nearly 2.

“You miss a lot in two years, especially when they’re babies,” Isom said. “My little boy had changed a lot, but not nearly as much as the baby.”

“When I left, she wasn’t walking or talking at all, but when I got home, she was running all over the place and talking like crazy. I missed her first words and her first steps, and those are things you just don’t get back,” he said.

Even though being away from the family was extremely difficult, Isom -- like thousands of other soldiers -- said he was honored to have had the privilege to serve and to help fight to bring democracy to the Middle East.

“You sign up for something like the Guard or the Reserves, and you take that along with all the benefits that come with it,” Isom said. “The work our unit did in Afghanistan was important, and what the U.S. troops are doing in the Middle East is important.”

As much as Isom’s situation resembled the situations of thousands of other American soldiers serving overseas, it was also very different in a number of ways.

During his “civilian” life, Isom is employed by the Chickasaw Nation, in the Division of Treasury, as a member of the Office of Management and Budget. While he was away for almost two full calendar years, Chickasaw officials arranged to keep his position available for him -- filling it only on a temporary basis while he was gone.

I’m beginning to feel overwhelmed at trying to hold my precious family together. Chaz and I have always been true partners in raising our family and sharing the responsibilities of baths, homework, bills, laundry diapers, bottles ... they say it takes a village to raise a child. Please pray that God give me the strength to be a steadfast source of love and encouragement for our children so that they never doubt that they are safe, cherished, and loved. This has been my constant prayer:

Lord, I beg you, lift my family up and surround them with protection, guidance and perfect love. As I watch my husband leave for Afghanistan, grant me the strength to do so with courage. As I strive to keep my family safe, bless me with wisdom. As we face the times ahead, bestow upon us the reassurance of Your constant presence. Work through us that the future You have planned glorifies Your name. Amen.

Vanna Friederich and other Special Olympics volunteers across Oklahoma are hoping

for an outbreak of unseasonably warm weather on Saturday, February 19. That’s because hundreds of volunteers and supporters across the Sooner State that day will take part in the Polar Plunge to help raise money for Special Olympics athletes.

Polar Plunge is a fundraising challenge made to an individual or group challenging them to dive into a cold body of water (this one taking place on Feb. 19) to raise money for Special Olympics. The event is sponsored by the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which is an international charity made up of law enforcement personnel who raise money for Special Olympics.

Polar Plunge events all take place on February 19, although there are events scattered all over the state at various sponsoring locations. Friederich said her group would take part in the event at Seth Wadley

Ford in Pauls Valley, the closest sponsoring site.

“None of our actual athletes will be doing the plunge,” Friederich said. “However, some of the athletes do have siblings, friends, and parents that will be plunging in honor of them, and I think we have quite a few teachers and other staff here at Latta who will be participating.”

“We’re looking forward to a great event, and hope that people can not only come out to watch, but take part and sponsor some of these great athletes for a great cause.”

Anyone who would like to take the plunge can take part, according to Friederich. Participants do not have to be Special Olympics athletes or even related to one. All someone has to do to be eligible is to collect at least $50 in pledges from people who promise to pay if the participant “takes the plunge.”

The only drawback, according to Friederich, is that the water will be cold and the weather – naturally – is likely to be extremely unforgiving.

It IS, after all, going to be February 19 – the dead of winter in Oklahoma.

All money raised goes to help sponsor Special Olympics athletes as they participate in various events around the state – including the annual State event at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater in the summer.

“The reason we are raising money right now is because we can only do one event in the spring and one event in the fall,” Friederich said. “The fall event we went to was a bowling event. At this event, we took six students and brought back three first-place awards and three second-place ribbons.

“The spring event we are going to attend is the track and field event,” she said. “Our athletes will be able to compete in track events like softball toss, meter runs, short or long jump and other track and field events.”

Athletes from numerous Pontotoc County Schools – including the Ada School System – will also participate in Special Olympics events across the state and in the Polar Plunge event. ■

The children are grown and moved away and the house remains quiet most of the time, but Ken and Jan Hudson don’t seem to notice. The Hudsons, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary January 27, have been retired for several years, are in continual motion, and seldom spend lonely evenings at home.

“We stay busy, and we like it that way,” said Ken Hudson, retired music teacher who led the Byng School choral programs for more than 20 years. “Between church activities and some volunteer work we do at one of the local retirement homes, we keep busy.”

They have three children: Ken Jr., Colleyville, Texas, Laura, of Hurst, Texas, and Lisa, of Moore, Oklahoma. They also have a host of grandchildren who are responsible for many of their present day road trips.

Ken Hudson’s parents -- Henry and Luretha Hudson -- owned Hudson Furniture for many years. He met and became friends with the teenage Jan Deering (daughter of Dale and Geneva Deering) when the two attended First Baptist Church back in the 1950s. On January 27, 1961, they exchanged vows at that same church and began what has blossomed into five decades of dedicated friendship.

“I’d have to say that’s the thing that

I like most about our relationship,” Jan said. “We’re best friends, and always have been. We do everything together, and we like it that way. When you see one of us, you almost always see the other.”

After five years teaching at Fort Cobb, Ken moved to Byng where he was the music director for 22 years. Jan taught elementary school at Byng for 25 years. The retired educators have now been active members of the Lovelady Baptist Church for nearly 30 years, and have spent many of their summers doing mission work with their Baptist colleagues in south Texas.

“We spent a lot of time down at Mission, Texas, at the Valley Baptist Retreat, “ Jan said. “That’s where a lot of people would come down in their camping trailers and spend the summer with the men building and repairing church buildings around the area, and the women and the younger people doing all kinds of things for the little Mexican communities around there.”

After spending five decades together, Ken said he still admired his wife today as much as he ever had.

“I’d have to say the one thing she’s taught me more than anything else is how to serve other people,” he said. “She’s taught me a lot through the

years, but I’d have to say that’s the one lesson anybody who’s around her very long will see in her life. She knows how to serve, and I’ve just tried to learn and keep up.”

The weekend before their golden anniversary, the couple traveled to south Texas to visit one of their grandchildren and then attended a family celebration dinner on their way back to Ada. All 21 of those in attendance were either children or grandchildren of the couple. Asked about what kind of romantic day the couple planned for their 50th anniversary, Ken laughed.

“We both had dental appointments that day, and then we went out to eat to celebrate,” he said. “That made not sound romantic to a lot of people, but we figured we’d just take care of everything while we were up there.”

And, most importantly to both Ken and Jan, they did it together.

“We have been through a lot together, like any couple that’s been married 40 or 50 years,” Jan said. “And we depend on each other and love each other, but I’d have to say it’s our friendship that is the most important to both of us.

“We do everything together, and not just because we have to. We do it that way because it’s what we want to do,” she said. ■
