Children are expensive, very expensive. In fact the USDA states that the annual expenses of raising a child range from $8,760 to $24,510 based on family structure and income. As the size of your household increases, so do monthly expenses. Therefore it is important to maximize your savings on the goods and services you need to raise a child.

During the first few years of child’s life you’ll have to buy diapers, baby gear, clothes, and countless other “baby supplies”. The cost of these items adds up very quickly and can easily exceed your annual household budget. I recommend gently used baby equipment and clothes to help reduce costs. These items can either be free hand-me-downs or purchased at local consignment shops or baby swap meet events. Cribs and car seats should be purchased new because of new products have the latest safety technology and standards and you won’t have to worry about damage that is not visible to the naked eye.

The cost of diapers and wipes can easily exceed $80 a month. However if you experiment with different brands of diapers, you’ll often discover the inexpensive brand works just as well as the higher priced brand. If you are set on a certain brand, look for coupons and sales and stock up. Several diaper manufacturers offer loyalty programs; so make sure you participate in these programs.

Baby formula is another product with loyalty programs, samples, and coupons to reduce the costs.

As your children get older the costs associated shift and you will need to find new ways to reduce your costs. Children grow quickly so there is always a need to buy clothes, so consider participating in or creating a clothing exchange with other moms. You can also sell the clothes that your child outgrew at a children’s item swap meet event, while looking for gently used clothing in their current size. Locally, there is a semi-annual sale held at the Agri-Plex. You can also sell and buy items locally on several Facebook groups to help reduce your clothing costs.

Toys can very easily break a budget, so I recommend keeping the toys you buy your children simple and limited. Invest in quality items over quantity. A set of Legos or Lincoln logs will last countless years, while the hot toy of the month might last a few months. Most children can have fun with simple toys and their imagination. Birthday parties and holidays can provide your children with additional toys as gifts from family and friends.

Babysitting is another cost associated with raising children and sometimes it is hard to justify this cost in the household budget. A babysitting swap is a way to get a night out without paying a babysitter. A babysitting swap is when you trade a night of watching someone else’s children for a night of them watching your children. Enlisting family members to provide free or reduced cost babysitting is another option.

Even though children are very expensive, having them is one of life’s true joys. By following these money saving ideas, you can raise your children without the worry of going deep into debt. ■

It is a common, yet unfortunate, sight to be watching television and see children starving in other countries. However, many people don’t realize that we have the same problem here in the United States. More would be shocked to know that true hunger exists in Ada, Oklahoma. Even though there are local food pantries and government assistance, this is no guarantee that a child will get a hot meal. Local schools know this fact and some even send food packs home with children over the weekend, knowing that otherwise the child might not have any food. This is not enough of a solution, though. And this is also why Abba’s Tables Association was formed in the fall of 2012.

Four years ago, in 2008, Edwina Lowry noticed that many people in Ada were expressing the idea that Ada needed a hot meal for the hungry. After trying to bring individuals and groups together to solve the problem she realized the best solution: get some friends together and create an organization to raise money and purchase a building. At the first official meeting, on October 9, 2012, officers were elected and plans started to form; though they are currently in the development phase of an organization, they still have big hopes. They want to get things done as quickly as possible because the need for this is great in our town.

After the first meeting, where they officially established Abba’s Tables Association, it was time to start exploring options for a location. The President,

Steve Gustine, had decided that he wanted to start a church that focused mainly on education of the Hebraic roots of Christianity. He purchased the building at 600 W. 9th for his own educational facility named Olive Branch that will also serve separately as Abba’s Tables. Also, Lowry’s business, Table Thyme, will be moving into the location as well which allows Abba’s Tables to have a professional kitchen as well as further economic support with profits going to feed to the hungry.

The meal has no requirement. If you’re hungry, you’re invited. You can come and go. Food will be served from 5:30-6:30 every day. However, the program is primarily faith based. Faith is what guided these individuals to this project and continues to support them throughout. After dinner, a Christian program will be provided and the people at Abba’s Tables Association truly want other churches to be involved with this as well, ministering as well after they finish serving the food. However, you don’t have to stay for the program in order to have dinner. It is completely voluntary.

The plan is to serve dinner 6 days a week, Monday-Saturday. There is currently a regular meal provided on Sunday in Glenwood Park, though Abba’s Tables Association has extended an invitation of their facility for use in inclement weather. Though the meals have not yet begun, they hope to start soon. The City of Ada has been very

supportive, working with the contractors to make sure that everything will be up to code and ready for the public. As soon as they get the word, the equipment will be moved from Table Thyme over to the new facility. All of the labor—electricians, plumbers, contractors, etc.—has all been the work of volunteers. The only other thing that they are waiting on is money.

They want to be able to offer a hot meal every day and they won’t be able to get started until they can be sure they can do that. Though several local churches have pledged to help, that help won’t come until after the first of the year. Even so, they need more help than that. Monthly pledges from individuals could make sure that the cost of food is covered and that a child in need will be able to eat dinner on a cold winter evening. They want to be completely transparent in their dealings and be a true community endeavor. If you have not been to Every Nook and Cranny (ENC) Boutique, you need to drop in. Once you spend some time meandering around the little store on Ada’s Main Street, you just might catch yourself wanting to go back again and again and again.

At least that’s what Donna Doffin and her crew are hoping for and working toward.

“We try hard to offer a wide range of really unique products that are perfect gifts -- from jewelry and handbags to designer cigars and specialty teas,” Doffin said. “We tried to make sure we created a place where people can shop even when they don’t need a gift for someone else.

Located at 110 East Main Street, ENC Boutique has been open for two years. They offer a wide range of designer and boutique items for women and men. Doffin said she tried to design a store that customers would enjoy just “browsing through”, even if they didn’t know of anything specific that they needed.

“We like it when we see people just coming in to look around, even when there’s not a birthday, anniversary or a wedding that they’re buying for,” she said. “We try to keep bringing in new lines and new products to keep it interesting, and we try to offer a very wide range of high-end products so our customers won’t feel like they have to go out of town to find

something unusual or extraordinary.”Doffin and her employees also

strive to create a warm, welcoming and friendly environment that makes customers WANT to come back again and again. Winter break is such a sweet and crazy time in the life of a family. On the one hand,

as parents, we’re excited about the possibilities that all this togetherness holds. But, on the flip side, we’re a tad terrified by all the free time we have to fill, somehow.

We don’t want to pop in endless DVDs or keep the iPad glowing non-stop. We need to walk the fine line between over-scheduling and total chaos, but this isn’t always an easy balance to strike. Pinterest is always a great resource for family fun but there’s something comforting about a good ol’ fashioned paper list that we can turn for times of planning and entertainment crisis. So here, as a gift to you, is just such a list.

1) Since the weather may not cooperate and bring Central Oklahoma any snow, you can put together a indoor snow-ball fight by making simple pom poms out of cheap white yarn. This “snow ball fight kit” also makes a great gift for other families as well. (Pom Pom Tutorial at http://www.instructables.com/id/yarn-puffs/ )

2) Make a bean bag toss by filling mismatched socks with dried beans and closing them with a double knot. Then award points to each child as they toss the bags into a laundry basket. Add obstacles, spins and jumps to increase the difficult and fun. Don’t be afraid to show up your older kids, it keeps em’ humble.

3) Have a Christmas cookie extravaganza, complete with several cookie varieties, colored frosting and sprinkles galore. Then help your kids put together cookie platters and deliver them around town as surprise gift to friends and family. You can even add caroling if you’re feeling both ambitious and musical.

4) Try your hand at homemade Christmas presents like cement garden stones. Every Grandparent loves a handprint-themed gift under the tree.

5) If you don’t already have one, pick up an “Elf on the Shelf” to hide each evening for your kids to find. 6) Stage a talent show and let every family member come up with something unique to wow the crowd with. Then sit down with some popcorn and let the fun begin. Be sure to keep the video camera or iPhone handy to capture the crazy fun for memories and future embarrassment.

7) Make a thermos of hot chocolate, grab a bag of mini marshmallows and drive or walk through Wintersmith Park’s fantastic Christmas light display. Many evenings there are carriage rides available if you want to spring for a horse-drawn winter wonderland experience.

8) Grab a big box, or use one of the many you’ll get throughout the season, then turn it into a spaceship. Attach pipe cleaners, colored paper and stickers.

Glue bottle tops or buttons to make a dashboard and use markers to name your spacecraft. Be prepared to spend some time pretending to be alien or mission control.

9) Do a photo walk with your kids, grab your phone or some disposable cameras and let your kids capture whatever grabs their attention as you enjoy your neighborhood together. Then develop or print the pictures to share or even make a collage with. You may be surprised at the unique (and blurry) shots your kids come up with from their unique perspectives.

10) Go old school and string popcorn and cranberries together while you watch a classic Christmas movie. Be sure to pop extra corn for snacking and when it’s all said and done you’ll have nostalgic garland and great memories.

11) Get some cardboard and invest some time making a puppet theater, then grab some buttons and old socks and whip up some characters so you can put on a show! This is an amazing way for your children to put their imaginations to use and it’s something that you can keep coming back to for the entire break and beyond.

12) Whip up some tub paint using baby shampoo and food coloring and watch your kids get creative as they finger paint your tub, themselves and each other. No worries because it all rinses off and actually leaves your tub cleaner than it was before they went Picasso on it, a total win-win.

13) In the midst of what can be a consumer driven season, spend some time volunteering with your kids and teaching them that in their season of plenty, there are many in our community who stand in need. There is a phenomenal and family-friendly outreach event called Davo’s Diner which is supported by many local churches and organizations that we recommend. 14) When in doubt pick up a few items in the Crayola aisle at WalMart and unleash your children’s creativity on a stack of construction paper or some play dough.

15) If you haven’t done so in a while, check out what our area Museums have to offer your family. The Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum in Seminole and the Oklahoma Science Museum in Oklahoma City are both part of The Oklahoma Museum Network. Both spots provide educational fun for kids and adults of all ages. On any typical Saturday afternoon in Ada, Oklahoma, it’s possible to enter into another world—a world of fantasy, visions of the future, and epic battles between good and evil, even though sometimes the lines aren’t that carefully drawn. These flights of imagination, however, are also tempered by skill, patience, camaraderie, and good sportsmanship. So, on a Saturday afternoon, if one walks into The Cave (a local comic book and gaming store at 101 S. Broadway), they aren’t just walking into a store; they’re walking into a friendly, fun filled battleground courtesy of the Ada Gaming League.

The first league members came together because of the love of a single game—Warhammer 40K, a table top war game that takes place 40,000 years in the future. In this game, the players must buy boxes full of models that they must first assemble, and the choices are almost overwhelming. If you want your army to be made up of humans, then you could choose from Imperial Guard, Space Marines, or the Viking-inspired Space Wolves, just to name a few. If you want to field an alien army some of your choices would include the futuristic elves called Eldar, the predatory insectoid Tyranids, or the robot warrior Necrons. Depending on your choice, you would also collect different transports and heavy artillery for your futuristic army. After they are assembled, it’s time to paint them. Different players take this to different levels. In fact, some people who play 40K do so mostly for the modeling and painting aspect. For others, though, it is merely a formality before they

can field their army.Starting a game could be a huge challenge

if it weren’t for the Ada Gaming League. Games require a large amount of space as well as specific types of terrain that can be placed on the board. So in the beginning, when they were looking for an organized place to play games with one another, they ended up in a glorified supply closet on the ECU campus under the umbrella of Continuing Education. By August of 2010, however, the owner of The Cave, Jared Tollett, let them use the space at his shop for their games. This has been a partnership that makes the league possible. Without Jared’s help and support, they could still be in a supply closet; worse, the league might not even exist.

Once the league had finally found its home base, it was time to become an official organization. They elected three officers and wrote out bylaws. The next step was to do something more with the organization and, since 2010, the membership has nearly doubled. This was great for many reasons. For one thing, the monthly dues could help purchase terrain for their games and prize support for their tournaments. But also, it allowed for more varied battles to take place and for more friendships to be made as well.

As the league has grown, they have moved beyond 40K to add Warhammer Fantasy as well. It is similar to 40K, except that it takes place in a fantasy realm similar to that created by Tolkien in The Lord of the Rings. You have humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, and goblins among many other races.

You can have an army made up of rats or monsters. You might see dragons or giant trees stalking the enemy and wizards casting fireballs across the game board.

The addition of this game keeps things more varied and also provides different games for different interests. In order to make sure that all needs are met, the league hosts both tournaments and a round robin for both games. The round robin league play alternates on a six month basis—6 months for 40K and then 6 months for Fantasy. The tournaments focus on the game not included in the round robin. And one of the perks of being in the league is that, if you have paid your monthly dues of three dollars, you don’t have to pay the entrance fee for the tournaments. And the tournaments are not just local; people travel from all over Oklahoma to compete.

The Ada Gaming League continues to expand, always looking for new members and new games to play. They are always looking to give back to the community as well. The last tournament was actually a charity drive with three cans of food acting as the entrance fee. Membership is open to people of all ages and backgrounds. The current members include high school students, coaches, professors, as well as many other local professionals. Families are encouraged to join as well—husbands and wives, fathers and sons, brothers and sisters.
