ad sciurus THE SQUIRREL Whole School Aendance 97.59% TARGET: 97.7% Issue 18 Monday 27th January 2020 This week the children will be connuing to explore the values and vision of the Naonal Trust. Last week in our music assembly I played a video from the Naonal Trust that talked about how it is not too late to keep what we have magnificent, and it finished with Elbows song, Magnificent’, which the children are going to learn this week in music assembly. This also supports looking aſter the environment and seeing how we can improve our climate. This is on our School Improvement Plan too, and Rob Hunter is joining the Trustees on Thursday evening to talk about how we can develop this in school. Rob volunteered to help lead this change in school. Thank you Rob. We have also had an enquiry from a lovely Grandparent who is interested in becoming a Trustee. If you or any member of your family would like to become a Trustee then do get in touch. It is a very important and rewarding role in school. Our journey over the last ten years has been excing and we would like to make the next ten years even more excing! To support the Naonal Trust learning this term, we had planned to take all the children on a Naonal Trust Day Out but unfortunately the Naonal Trust have said that many of the places we want to go cannot accommodate double-decker buses, so we are now going to use the minibuses and go over a period of me so that all the children can get to visit at least one of the Naonal Trust sites on the Isle of Wight. It has been lovely seeing Dojo posts of our families also vising these sites on the island. Thank you for your support of our term topic. This week in school we look at the A in SCARF, which represents achievement, and that to gain achievement we have to have effort, skill and courage. I asked all the children to think about an achievement they might be successful in today, so it would be great if you could ask them if they achieved their achievement tonight when they get home. Year 2 families are invited in for lunch this week and we have Week 2 of our Relax Kids programme this aſternoon. Year 3 are swimming for their third session. Tomorrow Year 1 are off to Cherry Blossom, and on Wednesday we have our next open lessons’, on reading. Please come and join your child at 8.45am if you can. We are interviewing this week for Office Manager, Learning Support Assistants and teachers. I will let you know how we get on next week. We have a Maths Challenge Day for some children in years 4 and 5 on Thursday and a SNAG (School Nutrional Acon Group) meeng on Friday at 2.00pm. Laura Kay used to lead on this, but unfortunately is not at school anymore and I would love another parent to help support us get our silver award so do come along on Friday, or speak with Miss McQueen if you are interested. Sporng fixtures this week: we have basketball tonight, girlsfootball on Thursday and volleyball on Friday. Dance Live rehearsals are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday in school, and aſter school Tuesday and Friday for all members. We only have two weeks to go and I will check with the team to see if we are okay, or need extra rehearsals next week. Dont forget to get your ckets from Portsmouth Guildhall and please remember to complete the survey monkey if you wish to travel on the boat home with your child. It was a very busy week in school last week with Fire Safety Training, Relax Kids starng, a fabulous visit from the author Billy Bob Buons and a space rocket workshop at Newchurch. It was nice to have a drier week for the children. This week it is a lile rainy again and the ground is extremely muddy. If it does become unsafe we will avoid playing on the grassy areas. May I remind families that we do go outside in our PE kits for PE, but if you wish you are welcome to provide a black tracksuit for the children. We could look in to geng a school track suit if this is something that families would like to purchase. I will ask Charli to do a lile survey monkey to gauge interest. I have not forgoen about the survey monkey for term dates and I will be taking this to full governors on Thursday this week and will let you know our term dates for 2020-21 and 2021-22—it is likely that they may be slightly different to the rest of the island as the Christmas weeks are not two full weeks and this is something that was strongly recognised in the survey. Just a couple of requests: as a school we have open communicaon channels through email and Dojo. The staff in school have been very accommodang replying to emails and Dojos outside of the school day, however, there has been a rise in communicaon from parents and demands to reply instantly. Please be aware that all of our wellbeing is important and if staff do respond outside of the school day, this is beyond expectaon. Please allow all members of staff a reasonable response me. In many organisaons the minimum is five working days, however we will always try to respond at the earliest opportunity. We will always support you, but I have to also support my staff too. Outstanding monies: we are now asking all families to clear their debts. School policy is that if you have any outstanding monies you will not be able to parcipate in acvies including trips, the Den and school lunches. Unfortunately our cash-flow will not allow this and we are monitoring this on a daily basis. It would be absolutely lovely if you could contact the office to clear your debts. Thank you in advance. On the newsleer today I have included an informaon guide from internetmaers.org on top ps to control childrens screen me. We seeing more and more children becoming very anxious when they are not able to access their screen me during the school day. The internet is a marvellous creaon, however it needs to be regulated. I felt this was a really good guide that MR Andre has found. Thank you Mr Andre. Daisys first day in school has been lovely, as we are just allowing her to become accustomed to the sights and sounds in school. Thank you to all the families who completed the survey monkey, this will close tomorrow. I have also been very touched by the emails I have received and kind offers of donaons to help with the cost of Daisy in school. She has her first training session tomorrow , but she has proved to be very relaxed in school today which is a posive sign. We are looking for a new MSA—pop in and pick a form and arrange a trial shiſt if this is something you would like to do. Have a good week. During the Spring

term the Reception

and Year 6 children

are having their

height and weight

recorded by the

School Nurses on

behalf of The Local

Authority Public

Health, as part of

the National Child

Measurement

Programme. Nationally this data is sent anonymously to the

Department of Health who use the BMI (Body Mass Index) calculated

from the measurements to target relevant services to specific areas of

the country.

Locally this data is kept on your child’s health notes and soon you will

be sent a letter informing you of which range your child’s BMI falls into.

It is important to remember that whilst this BMI data is useful to show

national trends, individually it may produce some unexpected results.

The BMI ranges try to account for the fact that children are constantly

growing but occasionally an anomaly will occur and a child who looks to

be in proportion will record a BMI outside the ‘healthy range’.

If you receive a letter that puts your child into a different range to one

you were expecting or you have a concern regarding your child’s

growth, please contact the School Nursing Team who will be happy to

look at individual data and offer any support or advice.

Your School Nurse can be contacted on 821388 (Ext 1or 2).
