Grave’s disease, an autoimmune disorder that causes the most common variety of hyperthyroidism, often causes eye problems including infl ammation around

the eyes and bulging eyes (Grave’s orbitopathy). Double vision may also occur as a result of eye muscles’ inability to move the eyes together. Eye pain, dry eyes, and sensitivity to light are other symptoms experienced by patients with Grave’s disease. While medications such as steroids and antibiotics and various surgical procedures may be employed to reduce the effects of Grave’s disease on the eyes, recent research reveals that daily supplementation with the mineral selenium can help alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life. Patients taking selenium over a six-month period noted signifi cant improvement of symptoms. P.S. The symptom of protruding eyeballs associated with Grave’s disease leads to excessive tearing and redness partly because the eyelids can no longer suffi ciently cover the outer surface of the eye.
