In the old days sages treated disease bypreventing illness before it began, just as good

government or emperor was able to take the

necessary steps to avert war. Treating illness after

it has begun is like suppressing revolt after it has

broken out. If someone digs a well when thirsty, or

forges weapons after becoming engaged in battle,

one cannot help but ask: Are not these actions toolate? From: Ni MS (tanslator). The Yellow Emperors classic of medicine: a new translation of the Neijing Suwen with

Figures 1A and 1C were taken at9:14:15 and 9:16:17 on April 5,2003, before taking the herbalmedicine. Figures 1B and 1D weretaken at 10:17:24 and 10:14:23,about an hour after taking theherbal medicine. Figures 1A and1B were pictures of the sides oftwo hands with the thumbs facingthe camera; 1C and 1D werepictures of the front upper part ofthe body. Comparing the two sets

of pictures, we can see thereduction in temperature fromtaking the herb. In particular, themaximum temperature for the lefthand side from LU 10 to LU 11around the thumb area wasreduced from 35.840C to 33.350C,an amount of 1.490C (or 2.60F).The maximum temperature for theright-hand side around the thumbarea reduced similarly from36.020C to 33.680C, an amount of

2.340C (4.50F). The maximumtemperature of the front body wasreduced from 37.970C to 36.540C.These changes were statisticallysignificant. They were four to 10times larger than the normalfluctuation in temperature, whichwas 0.250C.
