A WORD FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
A WORD FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Last year was a pivotal year for MEDTEQ: it
combined the growth of our community of practice
and the consolidation of our collaborative tools
while launching, via our Centre of Excellence for the
Commercialisation and Research (CECR), financial
support for SMEs and our Beachhead™ program
to accelerate the adoption of medtech innovation in
real care settings in Quebec, Canada and abroad.
Thanks to its members and partners, MEDTEQ has
become an Innovation Network. Many thanks to all
and to Québec’s ministère de l’Économie et de
l’Innovation (MEI) and to the Government of
Canada for their strategic and financial support!
Jacques Milette
What a year for MEDTEQ! The momentum was
significant: continued expansion of the consortium’s
membership, increased velocity of collaborative
projects, improved impact and ROI for all participants,
including for patients.
MEDTEQ has grown its activities, tools and services
to build a value chain across the full medtech
innovation spectrum on a provincial, pan-Canadian
and international basis. Our secrets for growth:
mobilisation, collaboration and impact!

MEDTEQ’s mission is, through collaborative industry led projects, to accelerate the development of innovation and position products and services developed by the Canadian medical technologies industry, thereby generating major economic impact while improving healthcare systems for the ultimate benefit of patients in Quebec, Canada and around the world.
MEDTEQ is expanding its collaborative tools in support of the full continuum of health innovation, from idea to commercialization.
*The RSRI program helps fund collaborative projects such as proof of concept, experimental feasibility, prototyping and real-world validation. The Board of Directors has therefore approved 26 projects, 13 of which are already funded by the Quebec’s ministère de l’Économie et de l’Innovation (MEI).
The FSISSS program aims to evaluate innovations in real-life care settings. Created by the MEI as part of Quebec’s Life Sciences Strategy, MEDTEQ implements this tool with the MEI, Quebec’s ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS) and the Bureau de l’innovation of the MSSS. In 2018-2019, 67 projects were submitted to the 2nd Call for Proposals and 21 were funded.

A GROWING INTERNATIONALLEADERSHIP
One of the flagship programs of the MEDTEQ Centre of Excellence in Commercialization and Research (CECR) is the Beachhead™ program. It aims to establish centres for the collaborative adoption of the best medical technologies for the benefit of patients and health systems in Canada and around the world. This collaborative adoption is done with patients, researchers, clinicians, health administrators, governments and industry. In 2018-2019, 7 centres were selected for their excellence in a cutting-edge field.
In July 2018, MEDTEQ was officially appointed as Centre of Excellence in Commercialization and Research (CECR). Funded by the Federal Government, the CECR program included a $14 million investment fund. Through several financing tools and its expertise in the medical technology industry, MEDTEQ can now invest in start-ups and SMEs based in Canada with collaborative projects in medical technologies. This is an essential element for health innovation, since it allows a leverage effect of up to 9 times the original investment. With these investments, SMEs can finalize their market approach by taking advantage of a robust reimboursement strategy. During the 2018-2019 fiscal year, 8 investments were finalized in Canadian SMEs.

GOING INTERNATIONALIn the continuum of programs proposed by MEDTEQ, the new tool ‘‘MEDTEQ Exchange’’ from the Start-Up Québec program supported by the ministère de l’Économie et de l’Innovation du Québec (MEI), allows SMEs to explore their targeted market through a network of foreign partners. Through partnerships established locally with several other countries, SMEs can directly meet local partners, know as soon as possible the reimbursement process for their products/services in the countries they are targeting, the challenges of licensing, distribution or setting up their business activities abroad.

This year marked the launch of the new positioning of MEDTEQ’s annual event.Indeed, consistent with its CECR, MEDTEQ has broadened its reach and now offers a major Canadian event: the MEDTEQ Innovation Summit.
In January 2019, MEDTEQ’s annual event is now a 3-day program, focused on networking. While the first day was devoted to conferences, the other two days allowed participants to visit the various MEDTEQ Beachhead™ centres. An event organized at Centech, with a focus on SMEs, was organized on the last day and highlighted the innovations of early stage companies.
Once again this year, MEDTEQ brought together players of the medical technology industry (local, provincial and international) to discuss a major topic: enabling better quality of life for patients and citizens. From the hospital of the future to the engagement of cities and citizens, including the integration of technologies, a 360° vision was presented during this event.
