After School Achievement Program Students who need help with homework will find it here. This is an after school
homework club for students who need extra support to complete homework. A
referral and parent permission are a prerequisite.

American Mathematics Contest (AMC) The Mathematics Department provides students an opportunity to compete with
students in Pennsylvania and around the United States. The AMC math contest
is offered to students in advanced classes during the school day in November.
Civil War Week Civil War Week is a premier, immersion program for students to experience Civil
War topics through re-enactments, simulations, guest speakers and special programs
with costumes.

Academics
Junior Classical League (JCL) This is a youth organization sponsored by the American Classical League. It promotes
the classical values of the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome by exploring their
cultures and celebrating their festivals and historical milestones. Students participate, at
an additional cost, in the state and national conventions where a variety of activities
(academic testing, declamation contests, athletic events, arts & crafts projects) take
place.
Grades: 8th grade Latin students
Fees/Expenses: $7.00 for JCL membership

National Academic League (NAL) NAL is a nationally sponsored academic competition. Schools all over the country compete
locally with the same bank of questions. Then regional winners compete with other teams
around the country in single-elimination matches that finally determine a national winner.
Students must be well-versed in literature, geography, history, mathematics, vocabulary, and
current events. The MMS team competes against Carson and Ingomar Middle Schools, and
this year, the schedule is expanding to include matches against the newly-formed team from
West Allegheny Middle School.

National French Exam Students seeking extra enrichment in the French language and culture may
participate in this exam. The Grand Concours (National French Exam) is an extremely
challenging competition that takes place nationwide each March.

Academics
National Latin Exam This test is sponsored by the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical
League. It is available to Latin students across the US, Australia, Belgium, Canada, England,
Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Niger, Switzerland and Zimbabwe. It is offered in
different levels from Introduction to Latin (8th grade) to Latin V-VI (AP Latin). The test
contains forty multiple choice questions relative to grammar, vocabulary, derivatives,
mythology/history and culture appropriate for each level.

Spelling Bee Top spellers in each grade are identified in English classes. These students then participate in a school wide spelling bee. The school champion will go to the University of Pittsburgh
to compete in a regional competition.

Central Board Room Display Each year Marshall Middle School has the opportunity to display student work in the
Board Room at the District’s Central Offices. Student projects and posters, as well as
paintings, sculptures, and other works of art represent the outstanding achievement and
talent of Marshall Middle School students.

Save Box Tops coupons from hundreds of General Mills prod-ucts throughout the grocery store. Each Box Tops coupon you clip and send to school is worth 10 cents. Technology Student Association (TSA) This is an international organization that operates at Marshall Middle School as a club for students with an interest in technology activities: computer aided drafting/design, Delta

Ice Hockey This is a club sport with competition between schools. Students from Ingomar,
Carson, and Marshall Middle Schools form one team The participants are taught the
fundamentals of ice hockey.

Basketball (Girls) Girl’s basketball is an interscholastic athletic program with competition
between middle schools in the WPIAL. MMS has 7th and 8th grade teams.
Girls receive instruction in basketball fundamentals and game situations.

Basketball (Boys) Boy’s basketball is an interscholastic athletic program with competition between
other middle schools in the WPIAL. The fundamentals necessary for playing at the
varsity level are taught with emphasis on teamwork and developing a winning
attitude. The team plays a twenty-four game schedule and also enters several
tournaments.

Both practices and games are after school. Some practices are held over vacations.

Interscholastic Sports
Cheerleading Cheerleaders cheer at all girls and boys home basketball games as well as all the home
football games. They do cheers, dances and chants to promote student and parent
participation. The cheerleaders also provide positive support and encouragement of all
athletes and the rest of the student body. Cheerleaders are role models for great school
spirit!!

Cross Country This is an interscholastic sport with dual meet and invitational meet competition
with other schools. Students from Ingomar, Carson and Marshall Middle
Schools form one team.

Football Football is an interscholastic football program with competition between middle
schools in the WPIAL. The first three days are devoted to conditioning, getting
uniforms, explaining positions and responsibilities. Participants learn fundamentals

Volleyball (Girls) Students participate in a volleyball program that has as its objective to teach basic

Track Athletes compete in a variety of sprinting, middle distance, distance, relay,

Intramural Basketball Students will receive some instruction in basketball techniques. Most of the time
students will be playing games. Sign up at the winter sports meeting.

Some examples:
Intramural Street Hockey Students pick teams randomly by number of students who sign up. Teams then
compete for the MMS Street Hockey Championship. The prize for winning the
championship is a pizza party! Some instruction is given in street hockey basics.
Main purpose is for everyone to have fun and to participate.
Intramural Flag Football Teams are chosen by homeroom. Teams then compete for the 6th grade cham-pionship. The prize for winning the championship is a pizza party! Some in-
struction is given in football basics. Main purpose is for everyone to have fun
and to participate.
.Intramural Tennis Students receive basic instruction in tennis rules and play. Students compete in
singles and doubles matches.
Intramural Weight Training Students utilize the weights for strength training and conditioning. Instruction is
given in the proper use of the weights.

Band All groups perform in two concerts per year and outside performances such as
Band Day with the marching band, at shopping malls, and special assemblies.
Outgrowths of this program include: PMEA Festivals, Allegheny Valley
Honors Band and the Jazz Ensemble.

Chorus For any student with an interest in singing. A variety of musical pieces are

Orchestra There are two concerts and outside performances such as string festivals, all

Counselor Aides Counseling aides help out in the Counseling Office by distributing passes to the
homerooms each morning. They also help out by keeping track of the students’
birthdays; by listing them for morning announcements and writing a card for
each student. At the beginning of the school year, several aides help by
distributing assignment books to the 7th and 8th grade students.

Service Jobs
P. A. Announcers Announcers must be energetic students who like to talk. Announcers will make announcements every morning with a team of other students. Teams will rotate
throughout the year so that everyone who wants to participate will have a chance to
perform the announcements.

Stage Crew Students are selected based on interest and are trained in using the light board,

Student Council The Student Council is important to the organization and the operation of school
activities. It sponsors many activities of the school and has a voice in its operations.
The student body elects the five officers.

Student Government
Student Council Representatives A student can become a representative for Student Council if they applied and had 25
names and a short essay.

Budget Committee: Grades 6, 7, 8 This committee consists of Student Council members who volunteer to work on the Student Council Budget for the
year. This commitment involves a few meetings and presentation to the entire Student Council for a vote.
Dance Committee: Grades 6, 7, 8 This committee consists of students interested in helping with dances/socials. Students volunteer to help choose a
Spirit Committee : Grades 6, 7, 8 This committee consists of students interested in helping to choose Spirit Day themes and publicize the day by mak-
ing posters and announcements.
Staff Appreciation Committee: Grades 6, 7, 8 This committee consists of students interested in planning Staff Appreciation and Bus Driver Appreciation Days.

Diversity Contest Each October, students are invited to participate in a diversity contest. They are asked to
use their literary or artistic skills to develop a presentation that exemplifies diversity.
Students make entries out of clay, two dimensional media, poetry, verse, music, video,
essay and/or some other creative means. The entries are submitted for judging by the
Diversity Committee and Barnes and Noble personnel. Several recognition ceremonies are
planned for the contest winners and prizes include gift certificates, bonds, and/or
mementos.

Girls Overnight Leadership Development (GOLD) This is an overnight program for all 8th grade girls in NA . The purpose of the program
is to enhance self-esteem and make the girls aware of situations which cause a decline in
self-esteem at this age such as eating disorders, alcohol/drug addiction, dating situations,
image, leadership and relationship aggression. During the program the girls are divided
into groups which are lead by 10th - 12th grade female students who have been trained to
serve as facilitators and mentors to the participants. There is also an hour of free time
where the girls can sit and talk, play volleyball or basketball, dance, get their nails
painted, watch a movie, or try to sneak a little nap.

Student Interest
Mini-Course Day This is one day in which all students have the opportunity to explore their interests by
selecting courses and activities that are offered throughout the day. These courses are
offered by teachers and reflect a variety of skills, hobbies and interests.

Talent Show Tryouts and a series of practices lead to an entertaining event filled with the many talents of the MMS students. The talent show features various acts including singers, dancers,
musicians, magicians and more!
