Because of the cost and hassle of field trips for some groups, numerous local art, theatre and science programs are bringing the fun to classrooms, scout troops, homeschool groups, community centers and daycares.

The following is a sampling of offerings in Central Kentucky.t Lexington Children’s Theatre offers

an Arts Integration program and a Theatre in Education program about bullying.

LCT also brings big stage shows into auditoriums, gyms or even cafeterias to ensure all children get the opportunity to see performances.

“The only thing really lost in the theatre element is some lights,” said Lesley Farmer, managing director of LCT. “They are getting a 100% professional show.

“Students in Appalachia who might

not get to attend performances in a theatre still get the same experience as if they did.”

Cost is more negotiable with Arts Integration programs, allowing more classrooms to afford the service.

“We try to tailor the education program and work one-on-one with teachers based on what kind of budget they have,” Farmer said.

“They can tell us, ‘We have so much to spend,’ and we figure out what we can offer.”t Art-To-Go Party features art projects,

including mosaic designs, sun catchers, pottery painting and educational arts and crafts. Art-To-Go owner Beverly Gilliam tailors the program to fit each classroom’s curriculum.

“If teachers or instructors have a specific topic they would like such as Native Americans, we research and create learning projects designed specifically for the individual or group,” she said.

by Katie SaltzForget the bus ride and permission slips. Several Lexington organizations are bringing field trips right to the students.

Because art programs have been cut in many schools, Gilliam is filling the gap with projects that students may not otherwise encounter.

“Many of the children may never have the opportunity to experience pottery painting or clay building otherwise,” Gilliam said.

“They have the opportunity to learn and express themselves through art as a result of the one-on-one attention we provide.”t The Curious Edge/Club Scientific

offers hands-on science activities. The Edge bases its program on the curriculum of each classroom.

Jenny Sallee of The Edge said that going to the classroom gives the students more time and energy to participate in the program.

For approximately $7 a student, The Edge can cover ample material and make take-home items for the children.

“Since there are no exorbitant bus fees, the money spent is going toward quality, hands-

on science activities,” Sallee said. “This also allows more time to be spent learning and having fun, instead of travelling.”t The Music Institute of Lexington

brings traditional music education to schools. The Institute also has a licensed music therapist to serve children with special needs.

“Students learn to read music by playing recorders and learn vocal techniques through singing,” said Mylinda Dockery, executive director of the Institute.

Because a school pays a flat fee for classroom visits, the cost is greatly reduced from if each child paid individually.

But the quality of the program stays the same.

“It not just singing a song, but they get to learn how to read music, rhythm, singing techniques, music history and playing percussive instruments,” Dockery said.

“And they may even learn to write music with their own lyrics, too.”

Is your child having a hard time in school?

Many kids are misdiagnosed with ADHD or a learning disability, when the actual problem is vision-related. Even with 20/20 vision, the eyes may not work together. This causes headaches, fatigue, and lack of concentration.

Sound familiar?

Some doctors would suggest medicating your child. Perhaps a better option is a breakthrough treatment called Vision Therapy.

As one of only five board certified Vision Therapy practices in Kentucky,Family Eyecare Associates has helped many children succeed in school, without the need for glasses or unnecessary medication.

Fundraising… Just the word sends most parents running for cover.

Although fundraising is critical to many school activities, it can be a nightmare for families, especially those with more than one child.

Door-to-door sales of food, gift items and coupon books can be time consuming and an annoyance to the neighbors.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a way to raise funds for kids’ activities that didn’t involve turning your kids into junior salespeople?

Actually, there is. Many schools and sports teams are now embracing alternative fundraising programs like those listed here:

RestauRantsYour group can partner with restaurants for

a special night or week when a percentage of the proceeds will go to the group.

For example, a high school band might hold Band Night at a particular Applebee’s restaurant.

Applebee’s gets more business and the band gets money for its programs. It’s a winning proposition on both sides.

Groups around Lexington have partnered with Applebee’s, Cici’s Pizza, Rincon Mexicano restaurants, as well as Caramanda’s Bakery.

the InteRnetWhat if you could earn money for your

team every time you searched the web?

Online services such as www.Goodsearch.com allow web surfers to download a toolbar that lets them earn money every time they search the Internet.

They then can designate a group to receive those funds.

Goodshop.com, Gooddining.com and igive.com donate money each time you make a purchase at listed businesses with your registered credit card.

stoResKroger grocery stores and discounters

such as Target offer programs that benefit groups each time you shop.

At Kroger, groups can purchase $5 gift cards that their members load with money, then use them to make purchases. A percentage of the sales goes back to the group.

The Target REDcard is a credit card that allows you to designate a school to receive a percentage of your total charges.

CaR DealeRshIpsTry teaming up with a

local car dealership for a Test Drive-athon.

Schools partner with a local car dealer who will give a donation for every test drive a friend of the school takes.

Farther from Lexington includes the Toyota plant, Hummel Plantetarium and Fort Boonesboro in Richmond, the state Capitol in Frankfort, Louisville Zoo and the National Underground Railroad Museum in Cincinnati.

Some area teachers are so bullish on the value of field trips they schedule up to five a year – and the choices are creative.

An informal poll of area public and private schools turned up some intriguing, off-the-beaten path locations.

Fayette County Recycling Center Want to instill love for the

environmentalism at a young age? Sayre School sends its first-graders, and Brooke Stone brings her third-graders at Trinity Christian Academy to view recycling up close and personal.

Sayre first-graders also visit local TV news stations, and Stone hits the Louisville Zoo and Fort Boonesboro, but a trip closer to home also brings the idea of recycling close to home, too.

Naturalization Ceremony Janette Moloney is a veteran teacher of 32

years, the past 21 at The Lexington School, and keeps her kids on the go with more than three field trips a year, including a trip to

Centre College to see renowned glassblower Stephen Powell.

A particularly popular destination for her fifth-graders is the naturalization ceremony with federal Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove, a TLS alumnus whose child is a current seventh-grader.

“It’s a very moving experience to see the process,” Moloney said. “When Judge Van Tatenhove is there, he lets our students lead the Pledge of Allegiance and they sing the National Anthem.

“For one of our students, her parents had gone through the process two years earlier.”

Moloney ties the experience to classwork on immigration. “Everything we do is tied to academics,” she said.

McDowell House in Danville In the study of Kentucky history, Melissa

Feaster escorts her fifth-graders at Trinity Christian to the state Capitol, the Henry Clay Estate and to Danville, where they visit the McDowell House Museum and participates in a scavenger hunt in Constitution Square.

“This makes history come alive for the students. They see the way people lived.

“You can’t compete with that in the classroom, so these field trips are extremely valuable.”

For students precocious enough to start a field trip bucket list, Central Kentucky boasts an array of worthy candidates – Explorium, Lexington Children’s Theatre, Living Arts & Science Center, McConnell Springs, Raven Run and nearby orchards.
