Active Teaching

A challenge facing educational researchers is to discover instructional methods that promote appropriate processing in learners, rather than methods that promote hands-on activity or group discussion as ends in themselves. -Richard Mayer, 2004 Reinforce distinction between cognitive & behavioral actionRousseau, (b. 1712, Switzerland)- democracy, social empowerment, child as an active learnerJohn Dewey (b. 1859, USA) rep. of progressive and progressive populist[2] philosophies of schooling, empirically based theory of knowledge Kurt Hahn 9b, 1886, Germany)- Outward BoundMontessori (1870, Italy) Piaget (b1896, Switzerland) - pioneer of constructivist theory of knowledge J. Bruner (1915) Paolo Friere (b. 1921 Brazil, Harvard 1969)- critical pedagogy, social action arm -- Popular EdDavid Kolb (b. 1939 USA, Harvard 67, Case Western Mgmt. school) , w/Rodger Fry - Experiential Learning, Learning Style inventoryRichard Mayer (UCSB, Psych)Gardners Multiple IntelligencesFrames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences, 1983.Intelligence Reframed: Multiple Intelligences for the 21st Century, 1999.Howard Gardner is an American developmental psychologist. Interest in the idea that there is not one kind of intelligence there are many.

Learning styles, not types of intelligence. In education and psychology, especially now neuropsychology, since early 20th century.Popularized by Fleming, New Zealand-based educator.6Blooms Taxonomy - RevisedA Taxonomy for Learning, Teaching and Assessing: A Revision of Blooms Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, 2001.Benjamin Bloom, American educational psychologist, University of ChicagoResearch in educational objectives and cognitive complexityTaxonomy of Educational Objectives, Handbook 1: Cognitive Domain, 1956.

Lorin Anderson and David Krathwohl, Blooms former students and colleaguesRevised for 21st century conceptions of work and knowledgeThe top two categories are reversed from old order.

7Educators have made many lists of verbs associated with each level of the taxonomy planning purposes, identifying the task.Verbs help with making the theory practical.8Activities for Pre-Reading, Reading, and Post-ReadingPracticeVocabulary BuildingWhat part of speech is the word? How many definitions are there for the word?Which definition is correct for this context?Read and paraphrase one or two of the sample sentences.

Of course, we have to develop the lower order skills in order to reach those on the higher order, and as teachers its our jobs to provide our students with the tools as well as skills they need to do so. As a result, dictionary skills figure into our curriculum. Work w/a partner to answer questions 1-4. A you ask B about curious. Does one celebrate Bastille Day?"It was my second month of French class, and the teacher was leading us in an exercise designed to promote the use of one, our latest personal pronoun."Might one sing on Bastille Day?" she asked. "Might one dance in the street? Somebody give me an answer.

Way of reaching the auditory learner; also a way to encourage performance among the kinesthetic types.

Three methods I use:

Teacher reads aloud, and models good reading strategies (pausing for vocabulary, asking questions)Class reads one-by-one, and we pause to ask one another questions and discuss. Good in a circle.Audio books. Good for a first reading, or a later deeper reading. High levels of student engagement. A voice they are unaccustomed to!

Can be done as an intro to a text, the beginning can be done to highlight a portion of something longer students have already read.20Thematic Connections

Edward Hoppers Nighthawks and Raymond Carvers short story Theyre Not Your Husband as examples of minimalism.21Making Inferences

Images of Aesop's Fables from Mike Dierken on Flickr22Making InferencesThe Wind and the SunThe wind and the sun had an argument about who was stronger. Then they saw a man walking down a road, and the sun said, I know how to settle this argument. Lets see who can force this man to take off his coat. You can begin. The sun hid behind a cloud and the wind began to blow and blow. But the harder it blew, the more the man pulled his coat tighter. Finally, the wind gave up.Then the sun took its turn.It came from behind the clouds and smiled down upon the man.Within a few minutes, the man took off his coat because of the suns warmth.
