At the Centre, we are committed to keeping our fees for programs, events and trips as reasonable as possible. Having consistent, fair ways of handling refund requests is part of what will allow us to keep fees low. We do not like to disappoint by cancelling programs and events, and we strive to offer programs and events that members would sign up for and enjoy. When we do not get enough participants, we do have to cancel. The following guidelines will now apply to cancellations and refunds.

Van trips/Programs/Special Events & Dinners All programs, trips and events have a “refund/cancellation deadline”. On this date the Centre will decide if the event will be cancelled or if it will occur. If the program, trip or event does not have enough participants, we will cancel it the day of the refund/cancellation deadline and provide a full refund to those who have paid. If the event is a “go” we will continue to accept registrations until the event is sold out. Important: Refunds will be given only if requested before the refund/cancellation deadline.

Theatre trips In the case of theatre shows, tickets often have to be paid for well in advance of the event. Refunds will be given if the tickets have not yet been paid for by the Centre. After tickets have been paid for, a refund will be given if another person comes forward to buy the ticket of the person unable to attend. In the case of theatre tickets where tickets do not have to be paid for in advance, the guidelines under “Van trips” will apply.

Foot Care Clinic/Reflexology appointments & Computer Classes Payment may be forfeited unless 48 hours notice is given when cancelling or changing appointment day or time. When a participant cancels and is entitled to a refund, a $2.00 administrative fee will be deducted. If it is the Centre that cancels, a full refund will be given. Refunds will be given via the same method by which payment was received (cash, cheque, debit, or credit).

CANCELLATION POLICY

I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer with time for family and friends, and even a Centre activity or two!

We have had a very busy summer at the Centre. The two BBQs – Canada Day and BC Day were very well attended and the food, entertainment, dancing, and weather made for fantastic afternoons! Several of our clubs and ongoing programs take a break throughout the summer, so we utilized this time to do some much needed renovations and upgrades to the Centre. New flooring and baseboards in the Lounge, Brock Douglas, and Tuk Shop have been installed, our front door was replaced, three new offices were built in the Sunroom and the staff did some office shuffling, and the Tuk Shop is in the final stages of being updated. In the early fall, we will be doing some upgrades to the lighting in both the Main Hall and parking lots. We can thank the City of Langley for financial support, and as well, the Federal Government who contributed with a grant for these renovations and upgrades.

Thanks to our wonderful ambassador team, who has been very active in the community this summer, we have seen a continued influx of new members around the Centre. I would like to take this time to welcome these new members to our Centre and to thank volunteers, current members, and staff for creating a welcoming and friendly environment. Keep up the great work! I would also like to let our new and current members know about our upcoming Active Living 50+ Fall Open House. This is a week-long (September 11 – 15) event with lots of free programs and try-its (See page 44 & 45 for details)! It is a great way to try something new this fall and show off our Centre! And please bring your friends, the more the merrier.

The last few Special Events we’ve held at the Centre were big successes. The June Ultimate Polynesian Party and the sold out August Everly Brothers/Simon & Garfunkel tribute were top notch. We are looking forward to welcoming back S-Bahn for Oktoberfest (get your tickets early for this one – See page 46) and seeing for the first time the Halifax Wharf Rats at the Acadian Music Festival (November 15 – See page 51). Also, remember the amazing fiddle player from our 2017 St. Paddy’s Day band, Blackthorn? She will be joining us with a different group, Caviar and Lace, for our Mistletoe Magic Christmas Dinner (See page 51). There is a great line up of activities for this fall. Be sure to check out pages 14 & 15 for details on some new yoga classes and pages 22 & 24 for details about our upcoming international travel opportunities!

We also have our Annual General Meeting coming up on Wednesday, September 6 at 4:00p.m. (registration begins at 3:00pm) in the Main Hall. All members are encouraged to participate. This is a great opportunity for members to have their say by providing comments on the Society’s governance and policy. There will be two Board positions up for election. Please take note, that to be eligible to vote in this year’s AGM, you needed to have been a registered, paid up member since August 21, 2017.

As we enter into the fall, we will continue to get busier. As many of you know, our parking lot is limited. For those who may not be aware, Blacklock Elementary School (across the street from us) accommodates overflow parking for our Centre. We ask that in times when our parking lot is near full, if you are able, that you utilize this overflow parking space. We appreciate everyone’s efforts and patience in navigating our limited parking.

I look forward to meeting all new members of the Centre and continue to encourage all members to bring forth any suggestions or comments on how we can make our Centre fun and fulfilling for everyone. Paul Goldberg

EMPOWERING NEIGHBOURS WORKSHOP

Have you ever wondered how your elderly neigh-bour is managing? Or someone with a new baby? Maybe someone new to the community? Do you notice that no one seems to visit or that the house or yard needs maintenance? These days, neighbours are so important to our well-being and social integration. It is often a neighbour who reports concerns. The need in our community is great, varied and increasing all the time. Social agencies struggle to keep up. But it is often simple kindnesses and knowledge of the community that help the most. Often, we are reluctant to become involved, fearing that we will not know what to do or that the person will need too much of our time. Working with the Langley Integrated Network of Care and You’ve Gotta Have Friends, Langley Seniors Centre will be offering a half day work-shop to support neighbours to become involved in helping each other WITHOUT becoming burdened by the task! Join us on Saturday, October 14 from 9-12 at the Aldergrove Library, to learn about the importance of connecting with neighbours, first steps, setting boundaries and supportive community resources. The workshop will be repeated at the St. Andrews Church in Fort Langley from 9 a.m.-12 noon on Feb. 17, 2018

To register, call 604-530-3020 and leave your name and number. Refreshments will be served.

Meet Lally

I am passionate about yoga and the positive effects it has on the mind, body and spirit. Teaching Yoga, for me, has been transformational, help-ing me in many aspects of my life. It has guid-ed me, nurtured me and allowed me to grow into a much more well rounded, positive human being! Yoga has instilled in me the ability to see people for who they truly are. To accept them without judgements. Yoga has made me a better person, making me stronger, more bal-anced with a sense of serenity, peace and joy. I am inspired by yoga to live every moment mindfully and in the present.

To me, yoga is all about the students and members, young and not so young, creating a community of like minded people. I love to see the change in students and members as they progress through my classes. It is my desire to help others nurture their mind, body and spirit, to increase flexibility, improve mobility and have an overall sense of well being.

I love to teach classes that combine creative, smooth transitions from one pose to the other, maintaining a spirit of light heartedness, and fun. I seek to inspire and assist students and members to realize the unlimited potential that already resides within them. I will always be a student of yoga, learning, improving and inspir-ing others. To be able to share yoga with oth-ers, humbles me and fills me with gratitude.

GUR SIKH TEMPLE & SIKH HERITAGE

MUSEUM, Abbotsford

The Sikh Temple is the oldest surviving example of the temples which formed the religious, social and political centre of pioneer Canadian Sikh communities. Architecturally, it is an adaptation of traditional Sikh forms to Canadian conditions which nevertheless embodies the fundamental beliefs of Sikhs and their early experience as immigrants in Canada. Ninety years earlier, on Feb 26, 1912, amidst much pomp and ceremony the same Sikh Gurdwara was declared open in Abbotsford, BC and many Sikhs as well as non-Sikhs from all over British Columbia came to take part in the ceremonies. Our group will be split in 2 and we will tour the outside and then inside, and then the entire group will go upstairs into the sacred space for open dialogue/q&a. A Vegetarian Indian lunch will be served at the temple. If you have dietary restrictions please bring a lunch with you. Please note there will be some etiquette instructions for our visit, we will inform you either prior to the trip or on the day of the trip. ONEGIN Surrey Art Centre

When Evgeni Onegin visits the Larin family estate, his romantic charms stir passions long forgotten by its residents. Poet Vladimir Lensky’s romantic ideals are challenged (a duel!) after Onegin flirts with his fiancée Olga Larin, and even the sensible Tatyana Larin falls for the handsome rogue. The hit musical moves, shakes, and wakes audiences with its sweeping score, leaving the powerful question swirling in their minds: Look around, look around, look around, do you see someone worth dying for?

At the Movies

GOING IN STYLE Oscar winners Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”), Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules,” “Hannah and Her Sisters”) and Alan Arkin (“Little Miss Sunshine”) team up as lifelong buddies Willie, Joe and Al, who decide to buck retirement and step off the straight-and-narrow for the first time in their lives when their pension fund becomes a corporate casualty, in director Zach Braff’s comedy “Going in Style.” Date: Friday, September 15 Time: 1:00pm - 3:00pm

MEGAN LEAVEY

The true life story of Megan Leavey, a young Marine corporal whose unique discipline and bond with a military combat dog saved many lives during her deployment in Iraq. Assigned to clean up the K-9 unit after a disciplinary hearing, Leavey starts to identify with Rex, a particularly aggressive dog that she trains. Over the course of their service, Megan and Rex complete more than 100 missions until an improvised explosive device injures both, putting their fates in jeopardy. Date: Wednesday, October 4 Time: 1:00pm - 3:00pm

MAUDIE

MAUDIE, based on a true story, is an unlikely romance in which the reclusive Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke) hires a fragile yet determined woman named Maudie (Sally Hawkins) to be his housekeeper. Maudie, bright-eyed but hunched with crippled hands, yearns to be independent, to live away from her protective family and she also yearns, passionately, to create art. Unexpectedly, Everett finds himself falling in love. MAUDIE charts Everett's efforts to protect himself from being hurt, Maudie's deep and abiding love for this difficult man and her surprising rise to fame as a folk painter. Date: Wednesday, December 20 Time: 1:00pm - 3:00pm

DUNKIRK

In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated. Date: Wednesday, January 17, 2018 Time: 1:00pm - 3:00pm
