PERSONALLY SPEAKINGOne indelible memory from my child-hood is of a boy about my age walking oncrutches. Each time he took a step withhis right foot, his left leg swung limplya few inches o the ground. He woremismatched brown leather shoes, and theleft was noticeably smaller than the right.

Polio, my mother explained when the boy was out of earshot.His short leg has stopped growing. Will it ever catch up? Iasked. No, she said, the damage is permanent. I imaginedhow that boy must have felt, knowing that his body wouldnever be quite whole.

Most of us can thank God for two healthy legs. He alsoequipped us with two other legs, and those are even moreimportant to our overall well-beingwho we are and what

we do, our character and our calling. As long as both developat a steady rate, our lives have symmetry and balance. But if

we concentrate on one to the neglect of the other, we lose that.And if it is who we are that gets neglected, which is often thecase, we stop growing emotionally and spiritually as we should.

Fortunately, unlike physical handicaps caused by polioand other crippling diseases, such damage to our spirits is notirreversible. We can always work at bringing our lives backinto proper balance, and God is always happy to work with ustoward that end. In fact, He wants nothing more than to helpus reach our full potential and become the people He knows wecan be.

You are important to God, and so are your happiness andwholeness. You are His creation and dearly loved by Him, butyou are also a work in progress. Tis issue explains some ways

you can make sure you continue to grow, healthy and complete.
