DESCRIPTION
Obesity has become the pandemic of our generation. Studies have shown that office workers are becoming increasingly inactive, which increases the risk of obesity. To help address this problem, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia teamed up with NSCAD’s design students to redesign the interior of office buildings. The aim of this project was to get office workers using stairs rather than an elevator.

What can fitness programs learn from chocolate?
Work is a chore.Fitness is a bore.Chocolate feels like a reward.
People take coffee breaks because they combine:
- a small physical stretch - a change of environment - a small time commitment- a pause away from stress- an energizing smell and taste
Can we inspire people to take "stair breaks?"
People need to be engaged on many different levels to feel inspired and productive.
Visual Stimuli
Give the left brain a breakby engaging right brain activity with abstract patterns.
Simple shapes and a neutral color scheme make it easier to replicate and customize to the building.
Lighting + Ambience
Mimicking the color, warmth and radiance of natural daylight can be both aesthetic and therapeutic.
People can spend an average of 25+ hours a week working in front of glaring screens.(U.S. office survey, Ergotron 2010)
Implementation can start simple at $4.99 with store-bought full spectrum bulbs.
Scent Stimuli
Scent has a direct effect on the productivity in the workplace.

Scent Stimuli
Plants are a "human trace": their presence subconsciously reassures us of security, attention, and care
Using cooking herbs and hypoallergenic mosses instead of flowers helps this fit into scent-free policies
Wayfinding
The design of a space often gives subtle cues about where to go, what to look at, and how to behave.
How would these themes be applied in a Case Study Site?
