Key national findings:

Almost half (nearly 940,000) of students taking the ACT® test in 2015 indicate an interest in STEM.For the first time, students are measured against the ACT STEM College Readiness Benchmark.Students with a measured and expressed interest in STEM continue to outperform their peersacademically.Interest in teaching STEM subject areas continues to lag.

Since this is the initial election cycle for the Steering Committee, members were elected for staggered terms,as notated below. The Steering Committee will help in developing the strategic focus for individual stateorganizations and state councils. The ACT State Organizations Steering Committee members will proactivelyadvance the work of ACT and ACT State Organizations by serving as representatives and relationshipbuilders. They will work to increase ACT efforts to help people achieve education and workplace success byproviding valuable input and insight to the work of ACT, supporting measures to develop workplace andeducation landscapes that advance the mission of ACT, and promoting college and career readiness for all.The inaugural meeting of the Steering Committee will be held January 21, 2016. Please look for additionalinformation from the Steering Committee in the coming months.

Mississippi: The Mississippi ACT State Organization Conference, Launching Students to College and CareerReadiness, was held last month in Pearl with 240 education and workforce professionals in attendance! North Carolina: Registration is now open for the 2016 North Carolina ACT State Organization Conference(http://www.cvent.com/events/2016­north­carolina­act­state­organization­conference/event­summary­745c7d0740ef4f60830fcb81d1eca2a1.aspx?i=66512ffe­2b6a­46b6­bb3d­cd5e04f39953) in Greensboro onFebruary 23! Tennessee: The Council is looking forward to meeting at Lipscomb University in Nashville early this month!Among the items on the agenda is a planning session for a training webinar in conjunction with the TennesseeDepartment of Education on how to increase college and career readiness in districts/schools across thestate.

Colorado: The Colorado Council held its first in­person meeting since the September conference. Not only didthe Council review its conference evaluations, but it also reviewed the ACT CCRC applications and selectedthe 2016 exemplars.

Idaho: The Idaho Council met in Boise for its rescheduled fall in­person meeting. The Council selected the2016 ACT CCRC exemplars and discussed next steps regarding an event to honor the exemplars. From apolicy and advocacy standpoint, the Council engaged in strategic conversation regarding the future of testingfor 11th­graders in Idaho.

Kansas: The Kansas Council launched its call for proposals for its conference, Defining the Future ThroughCollege and Career Readiness, to be held in Wichita on April 21, 2015, at the Hyatt Regency Wichita. Nextsteps for the Council include selection of the 2016 ACT CCRC exemplars, as well as selecting speakers forthe conference. Watch for registration in early 2016!

Montana: The Montana Council is moving along quite nicely with the establishment of a Council mission:Building a community of educators and workplace professionals using ACT products, data, and research tohelp Montana students achieve academic and workplace success. Next steps for this group include anestablishment of a Montana College Core and an associated learning event.

Nevada: The Nevada Council is excited to announce its keynote speaker for the upcoming conference,Building Pathways to College and Career Success for All Nevadans. Ryan Costella, director of strategicinitiatives at Click Bond, Inc., has graciously agreed to deliver the keynote address. Ryan was featured on 60

Virginia: Thank you to New College Institute for hostingthe Virginia Council in Martinsville for our fall Councilmeeting last month! The Council discussed the possibleimpacts of data privacy laws and the opt­out movement,among several other topics. back to top

Minutes regarding his work with Dream It Do It Nevada, a statewide effort to tackle the skills gap and create ahighly skilled workforce in Nevada.

Utah: The Utah Council met in Provo to plan for its upcoming March 17 conference, Moving the Needle:What's Working for Utah Students, at Utah Valley University. The Council is also working through a serviceproject to incorporate into its conference—more to come on that! In addition to conference planning, theCouncil selected its 2016 exemplars for the ACT CCRC and plan to honor them at the conference.

Wyoming: Plans are in the works for the Council to participate in the upcoming Professional Development,Engagement, Advancement, and Knowledge (PEAK) Conference held annually at the University of Wyomingcampus in Laramie. Additionally, the Wyoming Council began conversations regarding strategy statements,inspired by some conversation at the ACT State Organizations Leadership Fall Summit. The Council willcontinue these conversations and make some decisions over the next few months.

The Midwest councils are soliciting statewide and regional hot topics around education, workforce, and policyfor upcoming meetings and conferences. If you have a topic to suggest for your state's ACT council todiscuss, or if you would like to be a guest participant in an upcoming council conversation, please contactMidwest District Manager Rose Babington (mailto:[email protected]).

The Indiana ACT Council met at Ivy Tech Community College—Central Indiana in a terrific meeting roomoverlooking the Indianapolis skyline. Thanks to Council member Gary Pellico for arranging such a great spaceand for hosting! With new members coming on board from a wide range of backgrounds, the Council is excitedabout the opportunity to establish the group as a unique thought leadership body that addresses statewidereadiness issues spanning many dimensions. Welcome to Debbie Zipes, Martha Finch Anderson, and BruceJennings, all of whom made great contributions in their first meeting, whether in person or virtually.

The Minnesota Council met at the DoubleTree Minneapolis Park Place, site of the 2016 Minnesota ACT StateOrganization Conference, under the very able leadership of Chair Liz Nelson and Chair­Elect Conn McCartan.The Council has assembled a strong slate of practitioners to present sessions around the theme, TheChanging Landscape: Education and Workplace Success. Registration is now open for the February 12conference.

Registration for the 2016 Wisconsin ACT State Organization Conference on February 9 in Madison is nowopen as well. Dr. Demond Means, superintendent of the Mequon­Thiensville School District, will serve as bothkeynote speaker and presenter of a conversation around the achievement gap. Based on feedback from pastyears, the Council is excited to offer many sessions with panel and roundtable formats to encourageconversation. The Council also looks forward to leading a new facilitated networking breakout after lunch thatwill allow attendees to engage with each other while discussing statewide hot topics and conferencetakeaways.

The Illinois Council looks forward to welcoming educators and workforce leaders in one location with theMidwest's first conference of the 2015–2016 schoolyear in Oak Brook on December 10. The Councilmeticulously crafted an agenda around the theme of Expanding College and Career Readiness, with a strongfocus on improving practice and discussing rigor. Registration is still available online, but walk­in attendeesare welcome to register onsite at the DoubleTree Chicago—Oak Brook, starting at 7:45 a.m. on December 10.

As 2015 draws to a close, we remain thankful for the continued contributions of our council members andleaders and look forward to a terrific 2016!

In the inaugural year of the ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign in Maryland, Delaware, and DC, weask that you join us by helping to identify exemplary students, high schools, community colleges, andemployers within your state. Nominate exemplars (/readinesscampaign/applications.html) today. TheMD/DE/DC Council is also exploring dual enrollment policy initiatives in its states to identify barriers that areinhibiting more students from enrolling in college courses as high school students. Expect to hear more inearly 2016 about initiatives to improve dual enrollment opportunities in the Mid­Atlantic Region that will enablemore students to receive college credit while still in high school.

New England (Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont): Howcan employers and educators come together to work on important issues related to education and workforcedevelopment? How can we develop and implement policies that will improve workforce readiness and addressmany of the skills gaps we continue to observe? These are some of the issues that ACT State Organizationswill be tackling in the New England area over the coming year.

We continue to seek out partnership opportunities and individuals interested in joining one of our New Englandstate councils. Help us spread the word about these opportunities (http://www.act.org/stateorgs/membership)in your state!

New Jersey: Interest in the New Jersey ACT State Organization continues to grow, with a number ofeducators throughout the state signing up to become members. We continue to talk with individuals interestedin serving on the New Jersey State Council, which leads the New Jersey ACT State Organization and sets theagenda and initiatives for the state. We are very encouraged by the continued growth of the New Jersey ACTState Organization!

New York: The New York Council is scheduled to meet in early December to begin work on New York stateinitiatives. Check back next month to receive a recap of this meeting and the announcement of new initiativesdiscussed by the group.

Ohio: The Ohio State Council convened in mid­November to select this year's Ohio ACT College and CareerReadiness Campaign exemplars. While it was difficult to select just one exemplar in each category among thenominations we received, we are very excited to tell the stories of this year's honorees.

These very deserving state exemplars will be announced at the Ohio ACT State Organization Conference(http://www.cvent.com/events/2016­ohio­act­state­organization­conference/event­summary­8ebef0fe677f4c4cbd4daf795bfbec30.aspx?i=e4a50e86­ac6b­48c4­a0c8­6713f006674c), taking place January26 and 27 in Columbus, Ohio. We have created a dynamic set of sessions and keynote addresses for theconference, providing topics of interest for K–12, postsecondary, and workforce development professionalsthroughout the state. We hope to see you all there!

Pennsylvania: The Pennsylvania Council is scheduled to meet in early December in State College. We areactively seeking new Council members to help implement our agenda, which is focused on improving the stateof college and career readiness within Pennsylvania. West Virginia: Work continues in West Virginia around the ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign(/readinesscampaign/applications.html). We are excited to recognize the good work being done throughout thestate and continue to seek nominations through the ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign (ACTCCRC). Be on the lookout for information about the ACT CCRC recognition event in West Virginia that willoccur this spring!

Hawai'i: The application for the Hawai`i ACT CCRC (/readinesscampaign/) has officially closed! The Councilplans to review the submitted applications during the winter and exemplars will be notified in January. Thankyou to everyone who submitted an application. The Council is scheduled to meet in late February at WaipahuHigh School in Honolulu.

California: The Council has been busy these past few months with the coordination of its ACT CCRC(/readinesscampaign/) and 2015 California ACT State Organization Conference(http://www.cvent.com/events/2016­california­act­state­organization­conference/event­summary­

At theconference, a special recognition will be made for the 2015 ACT College and Career Readiness Campaignexemplars. The event highlights the work that educators and workforce leaders are doing to advance collegeand career readiness in the state. Participants will receive some valuable insights and tools that could impacttheir own communities.

New Mexico: The Council has been working very hard these past few months to put together a conference!Developing New Mexico's Workforce to Achieve Global Competitiveness will be held at the Hyatt Regency indowntown Albuquerque on March 21, 2016. Registration has officially launched! Register before the early birddiscount expires in January. Email the district manager if you have any questions about the conferenceagenda.

Texas: The Texas Council participated in the ACT CCRC (/readinesscampaign/) this year, and it was a greatway to recognize community colleges, high schools, and students who are doing great work in promotingcollege and career readiness in their communities. The Texas exemplars have been selected; congratulationson this statewide recognition, and thank you for all of the work you do to positively impact the lives of thestudents you work with. ACT State Organizations members: check the website for the list in the comingmonths.

Arkansas: Have you ever been curious to know what qualities and skills employers look for in new hires? Doyou work with students and want to learn how you can support them on their path to both college and careersuccess? The Council is spearheading its very first ACT State Organizations Conference, Delivering a 21stCentury Workforce: Personalizing Student Futures. The conference will be held on March 7, 2016, at theUniversity of Arkansas at Little Rock and will offer a variety of sessions on using data, workforcedevelopment, pathways for career readiness, and dual enrollment.

Louisiana: With the Louisiana application closed, the ACT CCRC (/readinesscampaign/) ApplicationCommittee will be reviewing all of the submitted applications and selecting the final exemplars.Congratulations to everyone who was nominated and took the time to apply!
