READING IS THINKING
Students need to be aware of their thinking and aware of what is a just right book
Students need to do strategic thinking and use comprehension strategies
Students need to be engaged in their thinking, notice when they are not
engaged, and make necessary adjustments
Eight Strategies of Proficient Readers
I make connections to what I already know.
I ask myself questions.
I make inferences by “reading between the lines.”
I create pictures in my mind.
I check my comprehension while I read.
I use a variety of fix-up strategies when I don’t understand.
I determine what is important in what I read.
I understand what I read and I synthesize information.
How Can YOU Can HelpBe a part of your child’s reading life. Please ask
questions about what they are reading. Once a child starts explaining, ask follow-up questions and help promote conversation. This talking will
allow for the student to check their understanding. Also, notice what they are
reading and check their reading log.
Students should be reading about ¾ of a page in 1 minute independently if they are reading a
“just right” book.
