ACORN NEWS Oak Park Village Cooperative, Inc May, 2016 FRIENDLY FIRST AND FOND FAREWELLS We wrapped up the 2015/16 season in grand style this year! Following a well-attended and relaxed Board Meeting on Wednesday April 20, our first bonfire in the newly created Browne Park gathering space took place on Friday evening, April 22, and was an unqualified success! Over 50 friends and neighbors - from Laurie, Jack, and Barb on Eboe to Gloria, Don and Kathy on Jute and from almost every street in between – came together to chat, enjoy the newly created conversation area, and share the spirit of Oak Park we’ve so long been wanting to see revived. Many of our community members took advantage of the opportunity to recall the events of the season and wish one another safe travels north. It was also our chance to thank Joe Geffre and the many volunteers who worked so hard to create this beautiful addition to the park. As our seasonal residents head north and our year-round residents prepare for the hot Florida summer, it’s a good time to look back at the season and assess our progress this year. We were once again able to stabilize our seawall along the river, complete a clean-up, paint-up, and fix-up of our Maintenance building and yard, add air conditioning to the break room for our staff, create the amazing gathering space in Browne Park, catch up on some of the maintenance items in the park, and see to the watering, trimming, and care of many of our landscape features. All of these things were done by volunteers, saving thousands of dollars that would have gone to contractors or other vendors were it not for our residents – both owners and renters – who volunteered time, energy, and labor to maintain and improve Oak Park. Board of Directors Message from the President Bill Bauer, President

FRIENDLY FIRST AND FOND FAREWELLS We wrapped up the 2015/16 season in grand style this year! Following a well-attended and relaxed Board Meeting on Wednesday April 20, our first bonfire in the newly created Browne Park gathering space took place on Friday evening, April 22, and was an unqualified success! • On the governance side of the ledger, we began a partnership with Associa to assist with the management of the park. We once again have a Park Manager, and she and the three Maintenance staff remain our employees. Now, however, we also have oversight, training, and support from a nationally recognized management company. Residents will see our Park Manager and our Lead Maintenance Worker making daily rounds in the park to make sure everything looks and works the way it should and that our resources are being used in the most cost efficient, effective, and productive manner. Other than the appearance of the park and the presence of the PM making rounds, most residents won’t notice anything different about having a management company except that we all have an account number, the option to pay our monthly fees in a number of new ways, and each of us can track his or her account and work orders online. As with any change, there will be little hiccups and details along the way that need attention, but things are going very smoothly. One of the most important items is that all of us must remember to let the Park Manager know when we are in the park and when we are not. Information and materials are sent to what is listed as your Primary Address, and although all it takes is for the Park Manager to check a box on the computer to change from one address to another, she can’t do that unless she knows where you are! When you leave the park, please let her know, and when you return, let her know that you’re back! It’s important that we know who is in the park in case of emergency. That includes providing the office with information regarding renters if you rent your unit for any part of the year. We must have emergency contact information on everyone in the park to assure that we can make appropriate connections if necessary. Some of the less visible benefits of our relationship with Associa are the ability of the Board to see and approve every financial transaction online, the creation of a park-specific Disaster Plan, better recording of who is in the park and when, the creation of a budget based on hard data and fiscal experience, prompt recording of income and payment of invoices, the maintenance of fiscal records that will be available to our auditor next year without him or her having to spend weeks on site going through paper files, and a service and support team available to our Park Manager, the Maintenance staff, and the Board. Of course the Oak Park Board of Directors is still ultimately responsible for the overall management of the corporation, but with a professional management company, it is now possible for the Board to focus on proper governance, planning and decision making as opposed to the day-to-day running of the park. Along those lines, it has been a very productive year for many of our committees. For example, the Long Range Planning Committee has developed a priority list of things we need to do and things we would like to consider doing. The Legislative Committee has completed the initial review and revision of ALL of the Corporate Documents. The Land Development Committee has begun the necessary development steps on the seven acres. The Architectural Committee has approved many resident requests to make changes to their lots. All of our committees were very active this season! RAC and the Yacht Club were busy, as they are every season, offering pot-lucks, steak fries, poker runs, dances, bingo games, and other activities open to our residents. That’s about it for this year! Safe travels, pleasant summer, and good health to all of our Oak Park friends and neighbors!

  • RAC Cathy Mahan, President Good-Bye to April and Welcome May! Let’s recap April with fond memories. The Yacht Club started the month with a “So Long Breakfast” for our seasonal friends who are returning home for the summer. It was fun and sad at the same time. Can’t wait until we see you all in the Fall. Another great event was celebrating Irene Orr’s 90th birthday. It was a great time for everyone especially Irene. The last dance of the season was held on April 16th and introduced another newcomer to the Park, Tammy Truitt, who also played and sang a great mix of music for everyone’s entertainment. Our normal Koffee Klatch is coming to an end. Starting the first Saturday in May which is May 7th, the Summer Koffee Klatch will be enforced. Everyone brings their own coffee or tea and their own sweets to share with everyone. A BIG thank you goes out to all who had Hosted the Koffee Klatch in the Fall and Winter. Your support to RAC and this Park is deeply appreciated. The Red Hats ended April hosting the Pot Luck Dinner on April 28th. It was a big success. I thank all who helped put this together. May is starting out a little quieter. The year round residents are just about the only ones left in the Park, BUT Koffee Klatch is still going on and Emmy Spackey will Host all of the Summer’s Pot Luck Dinners. Memorial Day will start out with a Memorial Ceremony at the Flag Pole near the Marina. Later that day, RAC will host a Picnic and Pool Party. I hope all will attend.

  • RAC has added two (2) new members. They are Dawn Cherney and Linda Splitt. Please welcome them aboard.

Other Upcoming Events: June 26th: Bus Trip to Broadway Palm to see: “Last of the Red Hot Lovers” July 4th: Dinner & Firework’s River Cruise October 22nd: Octoberfest Festival January 28th: Seminole Casino Trip January 29th: Wine & Canvas Party @ the Clubhouse Possible Tour of the Sugar Cane & Citrus Farms as well as the Manufacturing Plant in November. FYI: RAC is interested in knowing who may be interested in going to the Murder Mystery Train. It includes: sit down dinner, 3 hour train ride and a play. The cost is: $75/per person. This cost does not include tax or drinks. The outside activity committee wanted to get an idea of how many people may/would be interested in an event like this. We realize the cost is a little pricey. We would appreciate your feedback before planning this event because we need to make a commitment for a certain amount of attendees. We were thinking of going February or March. We would make sure it did not conflict with any other RAC events.
