Course OverviewThis course focuses on advancements in

orthognathic and craniofacial surgery, orthodontics,

surgically-facilitated orthodontics, complex

implant treatment, and multispecialty interaction.

Topics will include: advances in virtual surgical

treatment planning of complex cases including

asymmetries and in patients with transverse arch

discrepancies; use of scanning technology to

replace traditional use of dental models; surgically-

facilitated orthodontic treatment; interdisciplinary

management of patients requiring surgical

treatment and the orthodontist’s perspective

of the current challenges with orthognathic

surgery; and treatment of complex implant cases,

and management of patients with combined

orthognathic and TMJ abnormalities. Fireside chats

will provide opportunities for sharing difficult cases

with the experts as well as discussing challenges

impacting the specialties. The course format

encourages interaction between attendees and

faculty in an informal environment.

Target AudienceThis course is designed for oral and maxillofacial

surgeons, orthodontists, dentists, physicians,

and health care auxiliaries interested in the

advancements in the field and in sharing

experiences in a highly interactive setting.

Professional Practice GapsRapidly advancing technologies including virtual

surgical planning for orthognathic and implant

surgery, improving scanning and computer

technology, and advanced surgical techniques have

created a knowledge gap for practicing oral and

maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, general dentists,

and other dental specialists. This course will provide

an evidenced-based educational program to present

methods for implementing the latest technologic

advances in treatment planning and orthodontic and

surgical treatment. This course will provide a wide

variety of treatment options for patients undergoing

orthognathic, TMJ, reconstructive, and implant surgery.

Assessment of NeedPractitioners need new information and

management strategies in the field of orthodontics

and orthognathic surgery, reconstructive surgery,

and implantology. Topics in research and choices in

treatment are essential, as well as are opportunities

for collegial discussion and consideration of

application to one’s clinical setting.

Methodology-FormatThe purpose of this course is to engage attendees

in thoughtful discussion and debate of the issues

so they can implement appropriate improvements

to patient care. Each session is structured to invite

informal discussion of the issues surrounding the

topic being presented. Participants are invited to

bring cases for discussion during the fireside chat.

ObjectivesUpon completion of this meeting, the attendee

should be able to:

• Describe the complex nature of facial asymmetry and the benefits and uses of Virtual Surgical Planning

• Outline the benefits of surgical management of mandibular arch width abnormalities

• Apply advanced scanning technology to replace traditional use of dental models in planning

• Apply a system for coordinated treatment among specialties

• Summarize the steps, from an orthodontic standpoint, in facilitating orthognathic surgery

• Classify options for the treatment of the complex implant patient

• Employ AOO™ techniques in conjunction with orthognathic surgery and outline the benefits of this approach.

• Summarize how to carry out the most optimal surgical planning and treatment in locations where the environment may present difficult challenges.
