Dear Friends,

We live in a city where individuals facing hunger and those choosing to solve it are both called New Yorkers. The gaps between us diminish in size every time we choose to close them. For 35 years, New Yorkers have come together to solve hunger in our city one apartment, co-op, office and classroom at a time. It’s through the coming together of this myriad of neighbors that Food Bank For New York City has been allowed to be at the forefront of hunger relief, serving the city’s most vulnerable.

There was no infrastructure for this kind of work when Food Bank began. Food banking was— and remains—a modern-day barn raising…a place where a community’s resources are gathered to serve the community’s needs. What started as an unused warehouse in the Bronx has over many years become the gathering place for philanthropists, corporate and government leadership and everyday New Yorkers focused on building a central resource for the poorest charities in the poorest communities serving the poorest New Yorkers.

Since 1983 Food Bank has been the place where New Yorkers ensure that their neighbors never have to face hunger alone.

In these three decades, Food Bank has transformed from a response-based organization to one with a strategic approach able to serve complex needs in communities poor in resources yet rich in diversity. We’ve taken our belief that hunger is solvable, coupled it with the lens provided by the meal gap and the commitment inherent in a network of community-based charities, and turned it into 1.3 billion needed meals.

However, seeing hunger for what it is and where it lives is just the beginning. Through commitment and tenacity, Food Bank puts innovative and scalable solutions into action.

Innovation in the hunger space is almost always about access to resources, knowledge and opportunity that are often taken for granted elsewhere. Innovations in our distribution system, such as Green Sidewalk™, deliver fresh produce and other high-quality foods to our member network in a consistent and timely manner. Current and planned renovations to Food Bank’s Harlem-based Community Kitchen and Food Pantry are designed to create even more opportunities for us to lead and foster impactful collaborations across our city and throughout our network, including the Innovation Center—our city’s first dedicated space to build on leadership and collective impact in the anti-hunger community—along with kitchen refurbishments that will allow more hot nutritious meals to be prepared, stored and shared both with our Harlem neighbors and our entire charity network.

From its earliest days, Food Bank has been the connector for New Yorkers with means to New Yorkers in need. The compelling portraits in this report are reflections on the challenges facing our most vulnerable neighbors, as well as the resolve of dedicated New Yorkers focused on removing hunger from our city.

These portraits represent just a few of the many faces and stories that make up a 35-year history of compassionate collaboration. While each road may differ, the journey always begins with facing hunger.

THE MEAL GAP STRATEGYThe Meal Gap Strategy focuses on the meals missing from the homes of those struggling to afford food. Food Bank’s strategic plan, “Feed the Need,” maps this information to clearly identify areas in need and bring resources into communities that need them most. In Fiscal Year 2017, of the 62.5 million total meals Food Bank delivered, 44.2 million meals went to our highest meal gap communities.

What it truly means to face hunger can be seen in the actions of those who support us and in the eyes and smiles of the New Yorkers we work together to serve. But identifying hunger through the people and communities it affects is only the first step. We create real and lasting change when solutions—built and bred by our fellow New Yorkers—show up in the communities that need them most, in the forms that serve them best. In FY 2017, we shared hope through innovative programming. We shared compassion through nutrition education. And we shared love through wholesome food served with dignity and gratitude. In fact, it is because New Yorkers are as grateful to serve as they are to receive that Food Bank is able to face and fight hunger where it lives.

A student’s success is directly affected by whether or not he or she is hungry. Alarmingly, 19% of New York City children live in

food-insecure households. Through the Campus Pantry program, Food Bank is using geo-mapping to put student-choice pantries in the city’s hardest hit areas throughout the five boroughs. And by integrating CookShop, Food Bank’s nutrition education program, students and their families are gaining valuable skills to establish healthy eating habits on a limited budget.

CHILD HUNGER AND NUTRITION EDUCATION

ADVOCACYFood Bank’s advocacy work is an integral part of effecting change. By mobilizing community leaders, Food Bank was instrumental in advocating for needed anti-hunger resources. Thanks to collaboration with the New York City Council and the de Blasio Administration, this work resulted in the third consecutive year of EFAP funding increases.

Along with fighting hunger by providing meals, Food Bank also provides services like free tax preparation and SNAP enrollment assistance to help raise the poorest New Yorkers out of poverty—hunger’s root cause. Through these vital services, Food Bank is able to support member agencies to comprehensively address the issues facing their communities. In 2017, 11.6 million meals were provided to low-income New Yorkers through SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) and 41 percent of the returns filed through Food Bank’s free tax program included the Earned Income Tax Credit—putting more money into the households and communities of our neediest neighbors.

INCOME SUPPORT AND SNAP SERVICES

FACINGHUNGER

Food Bank’s 2017 free tax program served 40,165 tax filers.

Campus pantries distributed food tomore than 23,000 K-12 students.

$19 million in funding secured in Fiscal Year 2017 for the Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP).

3.8 million additional pounds of fresh produce introduced into 20 different high Meal Gap communities.

FOOD DISTRIBUTIONFood Bank launched the Green Sidewalk™ program to meet the need for fresh produce in high Meal Gap areas. Fresh fruit and vegetables are delivered via “pop-ups” where Food Bank trucks set up distribution events on sidewalks in front of participating member charities.

CITY KITCHEN STRATEGIC PLANFood Bank began renovations to the second floor of Food Bank’s Community Kitchen & Food Pantry in West Harlem, which will house the Innovation Center—the city’s only training and development space for anti-poverty and anti-hunger leadership—as well as the City Kitchen, a new space to more efficiently process donated food via flash freezing, steaming and cooking, resulting in reduced food waste and increased distribution.

FOOD BANK 2 GO Customized volunteer initiatives yielded big results with two of Food Bank’s most dedicated corporate partners. Morgan Stanley helped launch the Summer of Hunger Awareness Campaign by packing enough pantry boxes to provide 18,000 meals. During Bank of America’s three-day Thanksgiving repack, volunteers packed 4,500 meal boxes, including pantry essentials and hand-written notes. Food Bank distributed these holiday kits to 18 member agencies in some of the city’s neediest communities.

MLK WEEKEND OF SERVICEHundreds of Food Bank staff and volunteers gathered at Hunt’s Point’s Bright Temple Church in the Bronx to create the community’s first and only soup kitchen.

GREEN SIDEWALK TM

Food Bank’s innovative pilot program allowing lower-capacity member food pantries to address their communities’ needs for fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables resulted in more than 50,000 New Yorkers receiving 3.8 million additional pounds of fresh produce in the city’s highest Meal Gap communities.

CAMPUS PANTRY EXPANSIONSThanks to Food Bank’s advocacy efforts, the New York City Council funded the expansion of campus pantries to 16 public schools, providing food and a range of personal hygiene and household cleaning products, resulting in the distribution of 114,078 pounds of soap, shampoo, deodorant, detergent, feminine hygiene items and other critical essentials.

SUPPORTING MEMBER AGENCIESBy providing hands-on training and support to our member charities, 82 percent of our 12,000 SNAP benefit cases were processed directly through members organizations. To low-income New Yorkers, these benefits are a lifeline.

MILLION MEALS CLUBFood Bank celebrated food donors who have provided enough food to make one million or more meals.  This inaugural group includes  Baldor Specialty Foods, Duane Reade, E. Armata, Farm Fresh, Frank Brunckhorst Co. Boar’s Head, Fresh Direct, HP – Hood, Katzman Produce, Krasdale Foods Inc., ShopRite, and Target.
