Conversations Join us at the Arlington High Media Center for fascinating Conversations with influential thinkers and writers. Hosted by Inc. magazine editor-at-large David Whitford, these lively evenings involve audience members in the discussions. Reserve your spot at ArlingtonCommunityEd.org Eileen Myles: Poetry’s ‘Rock Star’ Her cult classic Chelsea Girls refers to the Manhattan hotel not the city, but Eileen Myles’ connections to this area run deep. Myles grew up a self-described Arlington townie. “In Arlington, people would laugh at you if you tried to get people to look at your drawings or listen to your poetry,” she recalled. In New York, Myles emerged as a protege of Allen Ginsberg and friend of Robert Mapplethorpe, and went on to publish 20 books of poetry, journalism and fiction. Myles is a Guggenheim Fellow, recipient of the Shelley Prize from the Poetry Society of America and a Lambda Award for lesbian fiction. With the re-issue of Chelsea Girls by a major publisher, and as the model for a character on the the Amazon series Transparent, Myles is having her moment. In a rare local appearance, Myles returns to her hometown to share her journey during a month-long residency at Harvard. Almond is equally known for his famous call to boycott watching the Super Bowl. In Against Football: One Fan’s Reluctant Manifesto, Almond details why, after 40 years as a fan, he can no longer watch the game he still loves. How did a sport that causes brain damage become a leading signifier of our institutions of higher learning, he asks? Come hear his fascinating arguments amid the increasing concussion crisis facing the NFL and other sports teams. Steve Almond lives in Arlington with his wife and three children. Fifty years old with two young kids, Lyons accepted a job and a pile of stock options from Hubspot. His new employer made the world a better place...by selling email spam. Lyons describes the office vibe as frat house meets cult compound, where Nerf gun fights broke out at lunch and he was old enough to be his coworkers’ father. Disrupted is a hilarious story of self- reinvention and a definitive account of life in the tech bubble. Dan Lyons lives in Winchester with his wife and two daughters. In addition to his stint with Hubspot, he is a novelist, journalist, and screenwriter, most recently for the hit HBO comedy series Silicon Valley.
