Protection classification according to EN 60 529:1991+A1:2000 DIN VDE 0470-1: 2000-9 ( IEC 60 529:1989+A1:1999)
The housing body and all detachable housing parts are provided with a device for ground wiring.This ground wire connection has to be carried out by the electrical installer according to DIN VDE 0100, DIN EN 60204 part 1 or DIN EN 60 439 part 1 respectively according to the local regulations. Connecting devices, such as terminal clamps, connectors, printed-board connectors and plug and socket connections etc, which are provided for the installation into equipment and systems, are not equipped with housings with protection against direct contact ac-
cording to this standard.These parts can therefore not be classified with an IP protection class. The insulation part mainly serves for the functional insulation, but can moreover provide a protection against direct contact of active parts, e.g. to protect from contact by fingers and/or back of the hand. It’s surface is regarded as not conductive. The definite pro-tection against direct contact is guaranteed by measures of integra-tion and the exterior cover of the terminal equipment or system.

Rated cross-sectionThe rated cross section of a terminal clamp is the value stated by the manufacturer for the conductor cross-section to be connected, to which certain thermal, mechanical and electri-cal requirements are referred.
Rated connecting capacityThe rated connecting capacity of a terminal clamp is an area and/or a number of rated cross-sections, for which the terminal clamps have been determined, and has to be indica-ted for each individual clamp.The conductors can be rigid (single- or multi-core) or flexible. The statements refer to unpre-pared conductor ends without multi-core cable ends and include the largest and smallest connectable conductor cross-sections. It is generally possible to connect two conductors of the same cross-section and the same construction.
