Biomedical Pathway Information-

Principles of Biomedical Science (Level 1)In PBS we were medical professionals at Total Care Clinic. This clinic treats common medical conditions forpatients of all ages and provides conveniently accessible health services. The students learned aboutcommon vital signs and tests that are conducted when they go to the doctor. The tests we learned aboutincluded the basic metabolic panel and how it relates to the four macromolecules and diabetes. We alsolearned about screening for skin cancer and the components of blood to help determine if somebody isanemic or has leukemia. We also discussed telehealth and HIPAA laws.

Medical Interventions (Level 2)We spent most of the third quarter in an organ failure unit. Students were introduced to a fictional patient withdiabetes. Students learned about the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis throughout history for diabetes. They then learned how humans genetically engineered microorganisms to produce insulin for currentdiabetic patients. They then researched the fictional patient’s symptoms and began to link symptoms to bodysystems. They then analyzed lab tests results for the patient. From there, they were able to diagnose thepatient with End Stage Renal Disease. We learned NOTA policies to go through scenarios for organplacement and then looked at matching our patient to a donor in order for her to get a healthy kidney. Oncewe found a match, we simulated laparoscopic kidney surgery with practicing suturing. Students used theirown suture kits to get a good handle on different suturing techniques and simulated the joining of donor torecipient blood vessels..Biomedical Innovation (Level 3)Third quarter Biomed students looked at Covid-19 from various perspectives. First we looked at why we areconsidered to be in a pandemic and how it has affected daily life. Students completed a project thatencompassed the emotions and struggles of the pandemic. Finally we looked at the biological makeup of thevirus and why it has such a variety of symptoms on the human body. Students ended the unit and the quarterby redesigning rules, regulations, and procedures for various classroom and school locations to enable asafe and healthy, Covid-19 free environment.

Health Services Pathway Information-

Foundations of Health Services (Level 1) & Medical Assistant (Level 2)Our Foundations and Medical Assistant students are working concurrently to learn and master knowledge ofthe Human Body Systems. Before beginning on the individual systems, we did an overview and learnedabout Anatomical References and Directional Terms. To practice, the students did an “autopsy” of poor, deceased “Mr. Pickle” where they needed to make incisions, biopsies, and amputations while followingcorrect and exact anatomic reference descriptions. Moving into quarter 4, we will have mini-units on theskeletal, muscular, circulatory, and respiratory systems.

Health Occupations (Level 3)The senior students in our Pathway deepened their knowledge of Mental Health from both a personal andprofessional perspective. They learned about the importance of maintaining one’s positive mental health andvarious illnesses that can develop. Most importantly, the seniors created social-media-style Public Serviceannouncements to increase awareness for their peers on the signs, symptoms, susceptibility, treatment andresources for mental health. The next unit was on death, dying, and the grieving process. While it may seemlike a deep topic to discuss, the students had engaging conversations about personal experiences and theimportance of empathy in the Health Services field. Our upcoming unit focuses on Cultural Diversities inHealth.

PBL Connections

● African American History -- students learned about segregation in Milwaukee and the continuing

impact on health outcomes in Milwaukee today.

Global Class Happenings● Physics: Students learned about Kinematics - a deep dive into the study of motion.● IB Physics: First years students learned all about Thermal Energy (Heat) and Energy Production in

the real world. Second Year students learned about Electricity and Magnetism and how it is used andmade accessible to us in our everyday lives.

● IB Chemistry: We studied energetics, kinetics (rate) of reaction and equilibrium for the third quarter. We also worked on and completed our IAs!!

● IB Math Studies: Applications & Interpretations - In the second quarter, students learned aboutprobability.

● Physical Education: Fishing & Components of Fitness● Human Body Systems: We completed our unit on Power and how air, water and food keep the

human body going. The water unit dealt with the urinary system where students started the unit bydissecting a kidney. This led into learning about the filtering of the blood through the kidneys, whatmaterials should not be found in the urine and what those could mean for diseases or disorders.

● Chemistry: Students learned about dimensional analysis, molar conversions and nuclear chemistry.

Highly Effective Teaming SMART Goal:❖ For the 2020/2021 school year, the Academy of Health Sciences will bridge the communication gap between global and

academy teachers by Pathway Teacher share out, development of newsletters, manipulate break out rooms to include globaland pathway teachers, experiential learning survey share out.

Project-Based Learning SMART Goal:❖ NSOP 7: During the 2020/2021 school year, all teachers in the Academy of Health Sciences will complete two

Cross-Curricular Project-Based Learning Lessons that is an authentic, real-world problem that incorporates communication, collaboration, critical thinking, or creativity.

Responsive Student Interventions SMART Goal:❖ During the 2020/2021 school year, the Academy of Health Sciences will use data to identify students in need of academic

support. Twice a month, teachers will review data and develop strategies (power hour, open office hour, teacher collaboration, building relationships, and conferences) to increase student credit attainment as measured by grades.
