Course Objectives:In this class, we will focus on improving speaking fluency for thepurpose of classroom discussions and presentations. We will useauthentic reading and listening material as the topic of discussion foreach class, supplemented with handouts and activities designed toimprove your ability to convey information and express opinions/ideas
in English.
In the process of this course, you will be able to:
Improve your English fluency by practicing speaking withoutpreparation, or with preparation but without memorization.
Understand how to effectively present an argument orparticipate in a classroom discussion by analyzing appropriateturn-taking techniques.
Improve your English language skills by expanding yourvocabulary and grammatical accuracy.
Develop your academic discussion techniques by summarizingan article and expressing your point of view.
Prepare and deliver a PowerPoint presentation on a topic ofyour choice.
Monitor and assess your speaking skills through audio andvideo recordings of presentations, role-plays, and in-class orcommunity interviews.
Materials:I will provide links or photocopies of articles about top news issues and
current events, with a focus on China-Japan relations. We will alsowatch video clips of lectures available online. Discussions of thematerial will be facilitated with handouts and activities to improve yourspeaking skills.
Homework and Assignments:Articles will be read before the start of each class. You will take note ofany unfamiliar words or expressions so that we may go over them in

class, as well as any questions or comments you have. Please beprepared to answer questions about the article and give an oralsummary at the start of each class.
Interview and speech:You will interview a native English speaker (host family member,friend, colleague), asking questions about their biographical data aswell as a topic of your choosing. You will record their answers, preparea short speech about them, and then deliver that speech to me inclass.
PowerPoint Presentation:You will give a presentation in this class at the end of the 3-weeksession. You will select your topic, prepare an outline and present a 5-
7 minute presentation on an academic topic of your choice. You willbe working on effectively communicating your topic through the use ofPowerPoint slides and speaking techniques. You will have time withinclass to develop and refine your presentations, but should alsoanticipate working on your presentation outside of class.
