Foreword

It gives me great pleasure to present the 2018 Academic results to our A.B. Paterson College community. The results achieved are a tremendous credit to our students and their teachers, and reflect our deliberate focus on improving our teaching and learning practice, and the quality of instruction by our teachers.

I thank our dedicated and hardworking staff, ably led by their Assistant Principals, Heads of Faculty, and our Directors of Teaching and Learning. These inspirational and dynamic leaders provide much valuable advice to our students and, in turn, help shape their lives and provide opportunities unavailable to many young people. To all in our community who have committed themselves to the education of a child each and every day in a classroom, our society owes you much.

Our Academic Results over the last 7 years have demonstrated a commitment to educational excellence and achievement. Notwithstanding these wonderful academic achievements, we must remember that education cannot be simply reduced to a numeric scale, but rather we have an essential role in the education of each and every heart. Our College is so much more than academics as we genuinely develop the Head, Heart, and Hand in every student. What is the benefit in knowledge without understanding? What is the benefit of academic achievement

without the heart and determination to apply this to society’s many problems? What is academic achievement without the development of our inner self, the development of our character strengths, and the shaping of our leadership to use our new-found understandings for good?

Aristotle is known to have said ‘Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all’. Our College prides itself on the development of each and every young person and ensuring all of our students achieve the educational pathway they are searching for. As you look at these wonderful academic results, think about the graduates – their many personal attributes, their attitudes, leadership, maturity, the standards they hold themselves to, their ability to think and consider issues with deliberate depth, and the manner in which they act with purpose and character. These characteristics are worth so much more than just a high academic result, as they are the development and growth found in each of our special graduates. This is the A.B. difference!

I thank all staff who have been an essential ingredient in the development of the young people entrusted to us. I thank you for ‘lighting the fire’ that is intellectual curiosity and endeavour, and for keeping the education of the heart at the very heart of our education.

Year 12 Academic Achievements at a Glance

A.B. Paterson College has long been known for its high standards, expectations and academic achievements, but in fact our greatest achievement is in the development of character, inner strength and purpose in every graduate. These are the higher qualities that enable our graduates to succeed in so many different fields of endeavour and be the young people they are. This is our greatest achievement and proudly so!

Our pedagogy, Teaching for Understanding is based on credible research from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education and is internationally recognised to produce genuine understanding – so much more than the mere recall of facts and knowledge. With a genuine commitment to the development of Contemporary Learning Skills, such as critical thinking, collaboration and problem-solving (to name just a few), our students not only graduate with outstanding results, but with a mind and skillset to purposefully engage in any area.

Since 2012 the College has had a very deliberate focus on the development of our teaching staff. Research worldwide continues to show that the greatest impact on a child’s learning is indeed the quality of the teacher. This is where our College shines and is the reason we have continued to improve our Academic Results and develop such well-informed, strong and capable young people.

An education at our College is so much more than content. It is the development of individual thinking skills, and the deep and rich engagement with curriculum that goes far beyond the bounds of text books and course outlines that makes the difference in our approach to Teaching and Learning. After all – does not every parent want their child to be of strong character, filled with compassion and care for others, and to have their behaviours and decisions guided by an informed moral compass?

It is my great pleasure to highlight these achievements and, in so doing, congratulate and commend the many teachers, students and parents who have shared in this journey. The fact remains that the Year 12 results from 2012 – 2018 have been the finest in the College’s 28-year history. These results are even more pleasing when one examines the many other achievements in sport, debating, public speaking, the Arts and, of course, scholarship attainment of our students in these last 7 years.

Not all students wish to study an OP pathway and opt to undertake an alternative pathway to further studies. In 2018, a total of 17 students decided upon a Non-OP course of study, and many more chose to supplement their OP Pathway with additional Vocational Education and Training qualifications. • OP 1-10: 68.5%

• OP 1-15: 95.5%

• 19 students gained guaranteed entry to University courses

2018These results indicate that over a prolonged and extended period of time, 1 in every 3 students has achieved an OP 1-5. A truly outstanding and impressive achievement. These results have been achieved consistently, thereby highlighting the strength of our programs.

Throughout this time period, every Year 12 student has graduated with a planned pathway. This is clear evidence of the strong commitment and relationship between the College and our students to best navigate these challenging senior years of study and prepare for the course and career of their choice.


NAPLAN

The College’s NAPLAN results continued the outstanding performances seen in previous years, with the College surpassing the average achievement in National Minimum Standards against both Queensland and National data.

This simplification of the above NAPLAN data only indicates the percentage of students that achieved the National Minimum Standards and does not show the spread of high achievement in these assessments within the College. Further analysis of the data indicates that many of our students have excelled in achievement bands far beyond that expected of their Grade in each domain.

The following tables indicate the percentage of students at A.B. Paterson College, against the State of Queensland, that have obtained results in the various Achievements Bands. It should be noted that many of the A.B. Paterson College students have achieved results in Bands that far exceed that expected of their Grade.

C O M M E N T A R Y :

The data for A.B. Paterson College indicates high levels of achievement in all domains with all College students tested achieving National Minimum Standards in 15/20 domains.

Whilst it must be remembered that the NAPLAN assessments only obtain a snapshot in the education of each child through a single assessment in each domain, it is nevertheless of interest to parents and provides a useful tool for schools.

These results place A.B. Paterson College as the second highest NAPLAN achieving school, as compared to other independent schools on the Gold Coast. These results continue the wonderful tradition of exceptional results since 2008, in which the College has always maintained a top 3 place in the school rankings. A sustained and outstanding level of achievement over the last 10 years.
