About Us

Why We Offer Math Credit

• Michigan• Requires 4 years of math: Algebra, Geometry,

Algebra II, + math elective• One math class must be taken in the final year of high

school• This class can be ‘math-related’ (i.e. accounting, business math,

CTE)

• GASC offers senior year math-related credit in 15 of our programs of study• Allows the student flexibility to fit CTE classes into

schedule

The Path to Approval

• Genesee County has 27+ school districts

• Sought approval from all school districts to accept the math credit from GASC

• Completed cross-walks for all classes at GASC• Used GLCE and HSCE from MI state curriculum

• Superintendents wanted assurance that students mastered those standards

• Next step: Cross-walk to Common Core Standards adopted by MI

Assessments: Proof of Mastery

• Other centers in Michigan• Math credit is given upon successful completion of

CTE course• GASC Technology Center

• Math credit is earned upon successful (70% or higher) completion of math unit tests/quizzes

• Students can pass CTE class without earning math credit

• Why?• Drive from 27 superintendents that approved math

credit plan for their districts• Common curriculum for each CIP code• Better data

What We Learned from Pilot

• Students are getting hands-on application of math skills, but also need pencil/paper practice

• Standardized testing, making a connection

• Health Sciences• Worked as a unit to develop common math

curriculum and assessments• All other areas

• Individually developed practice materials and assessments

Page 10: Academic Credit in CTE Helping CTE students meet increasing graduation credit requirements GASC Technology Center Flint, MI

Common Assessments Give Good Data

• Health Sciences• Developed common assessments for year 1

• Earning credit was equal across all health classes

• Used common assessment to drive instruction

School-Wide Initiative

2011-12 •99% pass rate (Health) vs. 97% pass rate (all others)

• Very small numerical difference • Potentially large effect due to different requirements

2012-13•Assessments are the same for every student in each of our programs•Every student is passing the same number of assessments to earn credit

• Each class has a set of 8 assessments that apply directly to their CTE standards

Let’s Take a Test!!

Electrical Wiring:

Given the following circuit, find the total resistance using the formula. (I am giving the formula for this type of problem. Students will have to decide which formula to use based on type of circuit) Total resistance is:

A. 0.167 Ω

B. 1.33 Ω

C. 0.75 Ω

D. 0.167 Ω
