Abrams Prayer for a Son: Sermon

The catch to getting your prayers answered

God does answer prayers but there is a catch that many people seem to overlook. In biblical

history many answered prayers were given as examples in the Holy Bible. One prominent

example is when Abram prayed for a son. Many people pray to the Lord but few believe that He

has any real power to do anything. The catch to getting your prayers answered is belief, you see

there was only one time the Lord cannot or will not perform miracles is if people do not believe

    that He can or will.

Abram was concerned because he did not have a son to carry on his name and the Lord

realized Abram's fear and the Lord told Abram not to be afraid because He (the Lord) is his

shield and that Abram had a great reward coming soon.

After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I

am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. Gen. 15:1

How Abram asked for a son

Abram prayed to the Lord asking God who would be his heir by pointing out that he (Abram)

did not have a son to be his rightful heir so his steward Eliezer of Damascus would have to be

his heir. Notice that Abram did not just say, God will you please give me a son?, but instead

Abram pointed out to God the very important reason why Abram needed a son.Abram prayed to

the Lord telling Him that he (Abram) did not have a son (an heir) of his own, while point out that

his steward would end up as his heir because he had no son.

And Abram said, Lord God what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless and the steward of my

house is this Eliezer of Damascus? Gen. 15:2

And Abram said, Behold to me thou hast given no seed: and and lo, one born in my house is

    mine heir. Gen. 15:3

    The Lord answers Abrams prayer

The Lord answered Abram's prayer telling him that he will have an heir of his own

And behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir but he that

shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. Gen. 15:5

Abram and Sara were getting on in years and Sara was well past her childbearing years. Yet the

Lord assured Abram that his heirs would number more than the stars in heaven.

And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven and tell the stars, if thou be

able to number them and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be, Gen. 15:5

    Abram believed the Lord

Abram believed that the Lord would provide him with a son, an heir from his own bowels and

he also believed that his seed would be as numerous as the stars.

And he believed in the Lord and he counted it to him for righteousness. Gen. 15:6

    Abram

Abram and Sarah did indeed have a son and named him Ishmael. Had Abram not believed that

the Lord could make it happen-Ishmael would not have been conceived.

The one and only time Christ could not perform miracles

Stop and ponder on this a moment. While Jesus Christ was still on this earth in human form-he

performed many miracles-but there was only one time that he could not perform a miracle-this

incident seems to be conveniently bypassed by many teachers of the word. The only time Jesus

Christ did not perform miracles on his journey was when he was in His own hometown where he

was raised by his earthly father Joseph and mother Mary.

Open your bibles to Matt. Chapter 13:53

And it came to pass that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence. Matt.

And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that

they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?

    Matt. 13:54

Is not this the carpenters son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and

Joses, and Simon, and Judas? Matt. 13:55

And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? Matt.

    13:56

When Jesus was questioned about why He did not perform any miracles (mighty works) in His

own home town His response was that a prophet has no honor in his own country and in his own

house because they do not believe-theres that word again believe. Jesus did not perform any

miracles in His hometown because the people there did not believe He could.

And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them,A prophet is not without honour, save

in his own country, and in his own house. Matt. 13:57

And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief. Matt. 13:58

So you see that we can ask many things in prayer but there are a few catches to getting your

prayers answered. You must follow Jesus Christs example of prayer, The Lords prayer, you

must ask in Jesus Christs Holy name, you must not ask amiss, and you must completely believe

that the Lord can and will answer your prayers.
