About Us The National Stuttering Association is the world’s
largest stuttering support organization dedicated to
providing resources to people who stutter and their
families. Based in New York, we have over 125
support groups serving our members nationwide.
Our Mission The National Stuttering Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing hope and empowerment to children and adults who stutter, their families, and professionals through support, education, advocacy, and research.
Stuttering At A Glance
! Stuttering is a communication disorder involving disruptions, or “disfluencies,” in
a person’s speech.
! Over 3 million American adults stutter.
! The exact cause of stuttering is unknown but
may include both genetic and environmental
factors.
! There is no cure for stuttering. ! 10% of people experience stuttering at some
point in their lives, usually in early childhood.
! Children, adolescents, and adults all can
benefit from treatment. Treatment is designed to help people who stutter learn to
manage their stuttering, increase their speech fluency, and improve their self-
confidence.
! Stuttering affects more boys than girls and tends to run in families. Stuttering
typically starts between the ages of 2 ½ and 5 years.
! The accepted term for those who stutter is “person who stutters.”
About 1% of the population stutters in any given time.
Why We Matter ! Bullying and Teasing. Children who stutter are often victims of bullying and
teasing in school. The National Stuttering Association works with parents, teachers,
and speech-language pathologists to empower children who stutter with strategies
for coping with teasing.
! Workplace Discrimination. Some adults have
experienced workplace discrimination as a result of
negative stereotypes about stuttering. National
Stuttering Association support groups give adults who
stutter an opportunity to share their experiences and
become more self-confident.
! Educating Speech Professionals. The National
Stuttering Association is a valuable resource for
speech-language pathologists to learn how to increase the effectiveness of speech
therapy in schools. With funding from the American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association, the National Stuttering
Association’s school in-service program
provides education and resources to
school-based speech therapists and
educators.
! Annual Conference. 2014 will mark the
National Stuttering Association’s 31st
Annual Conference. For the past 30
years, we have held an annual conference
for children, teens, and adults who stutter,
as well as their family members and
speech professionals. The conference
serves as an opportunity for people who
stutter to meet and share their
experiences. The 31st Annual National
Stuttering Association Conference will be held July 2-6, 2014 in Washington, DC.
You’re not alone.

How We Got Here The National Stuttering Association was founded in California by Bob Goldman and
Michael Sugarman in 1977, as the National Stuttering Project. Through public service
announcements, ads in local newspapers, and appearances on local radio and
television shows, the organization increased awareness of stuttering. One of the
group’s most important projects was the establishment of local self-help groups across
California. Today, the National Stuttering Association has more than 125 local support
group chapters nationwide.
In 1988, President Reagan signed a proclamation declaring the second week of May to
be National Stuttering Awareness Week. In 2001, the National Stuttering Association
hosted the first joint symposium for scientists and consumers: Pioneering Stuttering
Research in the 21st Century. Since then, the National Stuttering Association has
continued to maintain an unwavering commitment to helping adults and children who
stutter, their families, and the professionals who serve them.
