4. Ask a Fellow who is familiar with the candidate to function as a seconder for the nomination.

5. The completion of the forms requires a statement from the nominator which should be seen by the seconder. The statement is a critical part of the process for the committee reviewing the fellowship applications.

6. E-mail, fax, or mail the the nominating and profile statements to the ACD. By your submission of the forms you are affirming that the candidate has not been informed of the nomination.

The Thomas F. Winkler Award was first awarded to Dr. Thomas F. Winkler at the 2007 American College of Dentists New England Section annual meeting at the Yankee Dental Congress in Boston, Massachusetts. The reasoning for the creation of the award was to recognize him for all that he had done over the years to promote the mission of the American College of Dentists through leadership, education, and ethics. Thomas F. Winkler, a mentor, and role-model, served in leadership of the New England Section of the American College of Dentists and as the 2011 President of the American College of Dentists.

Each year the New England Section of the American College of Dentist considers potential nominations and selects the individual that best represents the high standards set by Dr. Thomas F. Winkler, both in professional and private life.

April New England Section Course on Ethics and Risk Management Presentation

2019 ACD Regency 1 Leadership Conference ReportIn conjunction with the 2019 Yankee Dental Congress, the New England Section hosted the Annual Regency 1 Leadership Conference of the American College of Dentists. The agenda was planned and led by Dr. Paula Freedman, Regent, Regency I. President Dr. Thomas J. Connelly , Vice President Dr. Mark A. Bauman and Regent-at Large Dr. Robert Faiella attended. Section chairs from other Regency 1 Sections were also in attendance and reported on their activities and plans for 2019. The meeting was highlighted by presentations from the SPEA students representatives from the New England schools as well as representatives from the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and the Touro College of Dental Medicine Chapters. Drs. Connolly and Friedman along with the other officers discussed activities at the national and local level. This included reviewing plans for the ACD 100th Anniversary Celebration taking place in Boston next year where the American College of Dentists Founders first met in the Boston Copley Plaza Hotel in 1920.

2019 Senior Student Awards

One of the highlights of the ACD New England Section Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon is the presentation of a Senior Dental Student Award for each of the five New England Schools. These students, chosen by their respective Deans, demonstrated outstanding achievements in academ-ics, leadership, and initiative. We congratulate them and wish them well as they enter our profession.

On Friday April 26th, 2019 the New England Section of the American College of Dentists presented an outstanding full day continuing education program titled “Ethics and Risk Management”. This unique course was developed into two separate clinical and ethical/ legal components. The morning session involved a 2 ½ hour presentation of 10 clinical cases by NE ACD Board member and Past-Chair Howard Hill, DDS and Ms. Catherine Frankl-Sarkis JD, MBA , which involved a variety of poor treatment outcomes which were mitigated by intervention and subsequent treatment rendered. Ms. Frankl-Sarkis provided the ethical points of interest in each of the individual cases.

Later in the morning, Mr. John Bagley ,a partner in the Morrison Mahoney law firm, and Mr. Joseph Regan, a partner in the Regan Kiely law firm ,provided a one-hour presentation on the “Anatomy of a Law Suit” describing the processes by which a law suit is developed.

After lunch these same two attorneys provided the framework for a dental malpractice mock trial case with other NE Section ACD Board members, local ACD Fellows, and EDIC staff playing the roles of the plaintiff, plaintiff’s expert witnesses, defendant, and defendant expert witnesses. Ms. Frankl-Sarkis played the role of the mock trial judge. This lively 3 ½ hour presentation culminated in a jury verdict for the mock trial where the course participants served as the jury for the case. Many thanks and recognition to Eastern Dentists Insurance Company (EDIC) for their co-sponsorship of our program and for providing the case information and the attorneys as well as Ms. Maureen Smith, EDIC staff member and mock trial actor for this course.

Almost 70 dentists registered for the course and the overall enthusiasm, discourse, and participation for this event demonstrated interest for the NE Section of ACD to continue to organize and present courses with this model of clinical and ethical/legal presentations in the future. Stay tuned for future announcements for our programs!

We would like to thank the following ACD Fellows and presenters for their participation and volunteer work in this course:
